Alicia Keys Performs at Webster Hall for 20th Anniversary of The Diary of Alicia Keys

by Kadeem Lundy December 4, 2023
written by Kadeem Lundy

Twenty years ago on December 2, 2003, Alicia Keys released her five-time platinum Grammy Award-winning sophomore album The Diary of Alicia Keys. Keys did a special intimate performance for AOL Broadband Rocks concert at New York’s Webster Hall in 2003 to promote the album’s release. Alicia returned to Webster Hall on Friday, 20 years after the AOL Broadband Rocks concert, to celebrate the album’s two decade mark and impact. A portion of ticket sales from the show were donated to Keys’ Keep a Child Alive foundation.

Prior to Keys walking on stage, DJ Saige spun records getting the crowd energized for Keys’ arrival. About forty five minutes after the posted 9pm start time, Keys entered the stage from the left side passing by background singers Raii and Whitney who are also her vocal coaches as she walked to the piano to perform Harlem’s Nocturne, the intro to The Diary of Alicia Keys album. The journey back to 2003 began while Keys performed “Harlem’s Nocturne”, the next song was “Karma” as Keys’ got up from the piano for the up-tempo song moving from side to side. Keys followed the album’s tracklist order for the entirety of the show.

Alicia was joined by Jermaine Paul for the performance of “Diary”. Paul shared his story about how he came to sing on the song. As Keys performed she received support from the audience which included her mother, mentor Clive Davis, and Grammy Award winning mixer/sound engineer Tony Black who all watched from the balcony. Before singing her rendition of Gladys Knight’s “If I Was Your Woman”, Keys mentioned Knight in homage.

The concert was memorable as being a concert of first for Keys. Keys performed songs “Dragon Days”, “Samsonite Man”, “Feeling U, Feeling Me” from The Diary of Alicia Keys for the first time since the album was released. Although Keys had never performed the songs live before, attendees knew the words and sang along. Keys also performed “Golden Child” live for the first time at the show, a song which wasn’t included on the original 2003 release of the album but was added to the 20th anniversary edition. During the encore, Keys took to the piano to perform “Lifeline”, her new song from the upcoming The Color Purple Musical film adaptation.

A little after 11pm Alicia wrapped up the show with a performance of “Empire State of Mind”. The concert showed that the songs from The Diary of Alicia Keys have stood the test of time, and even non-singles songs like “Dragon Days” should be added to the setlist of future Keys concerts.

This two-day festival was an amazing way to connect and experience over 30 eateries and 150 brands. The marketplace had a variety of different brands and vendors selling things from clothing and sneakers to special collection items. Festival goers were able to get their hands on exclusive merch and new drops like the relaunch of Kanye West’s first brand PASTELLE.

On the first day, Zack Bia and Field Trip Recordings had an amazing DJ set that kept the crowd going and also featured surprise performances from YG, Don Toliver, OhGeesy, SoFaygo, and Em Triplin. Lil Yachty was also in attendance and surprised the audience by previewing new music.

Another exciting part of this year’s festival was ComplexCon(versations) like the one with Speedy Morman and Funny Marco. This approach consists of direct questions mixed with a bit of comedy. Funny Marco talked about his rise to fame and some of his future goals.

Another notable ComplexCon(versations) was TI who was joined by Tyler Chronicles, Erica Duchess, and his King Harris. They discussed their new movie entitled “Da ‘Partments and the process and challenges of making of an independent film.

Some additional highlights include First We Feast Lagoon, where we were able to experience Hot Ones host Sean Evans touring different eateries, DMV’s famous Mambo Sauce courtesy of Chicken & Mumbo Sauce, and Hot Ones x Hot Pockets samples, and fans got to experience Bun B’s “Trill Burgers”.

Among other things was the highly anticipated debate for Sneaker Of The Year and the crowned winner was SB x Air Jordan 4. The panel included Joe La Puma, Lil Yachty, Jim Jones, DJ Clark Kent, and Kristen Noel Crawley.

The marketplace included activations and exclusive drops from various brands.

The final day of the festival included sets by BlaccMass, GloUP Jake, F1lthy, ZacFTP, and DJ Scheme. Last but not least, Kid Cudi took the stage to close out the festival. Ahead of his new album, he performed some classics as well as one of his newer songs entitled, “SUPERBOY”.

The festival was literally a one-stop shop for fans that love being the first to get their hands on exclusive merchandise and the opportunity to see the brands some of their favorite celebrities are excited about . Other notable people in attendance was Lauren London, Luka Sabbat, IDK, Chris Brown, Xzibit, and more. We’re excited for the next time ComplexCon comes to Long Beach and ComplexCon 2023’s exclusive Cactus Plant Flea Market capsul collection is online through NTWRK here.

In the meantime enjoy ComplexCon in different locations as they have announced they are going global and will be expanding to Hong Kong and Melbourne in 2024.

Lotte New York Palace Hosts Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony!

by Jaylin De Guzman December 3, 2023
written by Jaylin De Guzman

All Photography taken by Brian Schutza Photography.

Amid basketball, marathons, and baseball lies one sport New York remains incomparable of: Christmas Tree Lightings. This past Tuesday, November 27, Lotte New York Palace Hotel lights up its iconic courtyard. Known widely as Gossip Girl’s “The Palace,” Lotte secures their spot in this season’s must-see spectaculars.

While scarves blew awry and the colorful garden of wool mittens filled the courtyard, Lotte had the crowd covered! While the bar was stocked with apple cider, hot toddies, and champagne, trays of hot cocoa came circling around. Chef Bill Leonard, Lotte’s Head Pastry Chef, warms the crowd with his grandmother’s hot chocolate recipe. It was the perfect remedy for a night cold enough to see your breath!

Joined by the New York Yankees Shortstop Anthony Volpe, David Shenman dedicated the Palace’s hard work and magic to the staff and partnership with the Anthony Rizzo Family Foundation. The Lotte New York Palace Hotel has been a generous supporter of the foundation, aimed at aiding pediatric cancer patients and their families. For years now, Lotte has offered their beautiful rooms for families to experience the wonder that is New York at Christmas time. Following a touching speech, Volpe and Shenman counted down the seconds revealing the glimmering tree.

After a long-awaited hold since 2018, the Lotte New York Palace returns with its classic tree lighting. Right in the heart of the city, the Lotte New York Palace’s Christmas tree is ready for all its holiday visitors!

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Paul Giamatti, Dominic Sessa, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph talk ‘The Holdovers’

by Jess Lucero November 21, 2023
written by Jess Lucero

A familial bond goes far beyond bloodline. In acclaimed director Alexander Payne’s 1970’s based film, The Holdovers, an unconventional trio builds a bond in time for the holiday season.

The film is set at a New England prep school where Paul Giamatti’s character, takes on the role as the teacher, Paul Hunham. Hunham is forced to watch student’s with nowhere else to go during Christmas break. One of those students is Angus Tully, played by Dominic Sessa. Tully’s mom decides she’d rather spend the holiday season celebrating her new marriage. The trio is complete with school cook, Mary Lamb, who recently lost her son in the Vietnam War. Lamb is portrayed by Da’Vine Joy Randolph.

I had the opportunity to speak with Paul Giamatti, Dominic Sessa, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph to discuss their time working on the film. Dominic, a high school senior drama kid, made his on-camera debut as a lead in The Holdovers. Sessa shares that he originally auditioned for a background character. Casting directors, on the other hand, had something else in mind for him. Like a true high school senior his first call to share the good news was to his mom.

Da’Vine Joy Randolph has had an eventful couple of years in the industry, but explained that this character in particular, required a ton of studying. From the war that took place, to her Boston accent, learning how to properly hold and smoke a cigarette. Mary lamb was an intricate character.

While Paul Giamatti is a veteran in the industry, he praised Sessa’s debut performance. Saying he learned more from Dominic than Dominic learned from him. Taking note of his, “openness,” as well as how much Sessa, “fought for his character,” in comparison to Giamatti’s typical adaptable response.

Experience the The Holdovers in theaters now.
