The Team Behind “Every Day” Hosts an Exclusive, “Love is Love is Love” Red Carpet Screening in NYC

The clock strikes midnight, and in place of leaving a glass slipper at the party, you wake up in an entirely new body…. On repeat.

Seems like a bit of a strange phenomenon, but “A” in director Michael Sucsy’s new film, Every Day, based on David Levithan’s New York Times bestseller, regards this occurrence as purely routine.

Every Day shares the tumultuous love story of Rhiannon (Angourie Rice), a 16-year old high schooler, and the ever-evolving spirit of “A.” The connection between the two surpasses their unusual circumstances, but the couple is quickly faced with the daunting reality of what a long-term relationship truly looks like.

The cast and directorial crew of Every Day hosted a red carpet screening of the Orion Pictures film at New York’s Metrograph theatre in the Lower East Side this past Tuesday, February 20th.

Every Day is Levithan’s first on-screen adaptation of any of his written works. “It’s a little mind-blowing,” said Levithan. “Especially for this story because it’s one thing to write down ‘oh, I woke up in a different body every day,’ but to actually see it played by 16 different actors is astonishing.”

The amorphous “A” and the deeply intimate connection they share with Rhiannon supersedes all bounds of what modern society deems as a conventional love story. Every Day knows no bounds in respect to gender, race, and any / all factors deemed by outward physical appearance.

I really think that this film promotes such an amazing message, which is first off, love is love, and I also think it has underlying tones of just all around acceptance,” said actor Jake Sim, who plays Michael / “A” in the film.

Appearances at the screening were made by author David Levithan, director Michael Sucsy, and stars Angourie Rice, Debby Ryan, Owen Teague, Jacob Batalon, Jake Sim, Sean Jones, and Hannah Richardson.

Debby Ryan, who plays Rhiannon’s “stony” older sister in the film, reflected on the cohesive portrayal of one character through a variety of actors.

“It put me in a position of just wanting to sit there and watch. Like how did this person play ‘A’? How did this person play ‘A’? There’s so many different talented actors, who are all playing the same character and they didn’t even consult each other,” said Ryan. “But it feels familiar. It feels like [Rhiannon] is talking with the same character.”

Every Day and the character “A” wouldn’t have had the same fluidity if it weren’t for director Michael Sucsy, according to star Owen Teague. “Michael has a way of directing where he listens to you. He works kind of how you work, and he changes, which I’ve never seen before,” said Teague.

The celebratory screening radiated an effervescent glimmer of love and pride from both the audience members and those involved in the production.

Star Angourie Rice added, “I hope people like it. It is a story about falling in love with the person, and human connection, and I think everyone can relate to that.”

Every Day opens in theatre’s on February 23rd. Be sure to check out the trailer below!
