Power Book III: Raising Kanan Season 2, Episode 1 Review

by Julian Cannon August 1, 2022
written by Julian Cannon

The second season of Power Book III: Raising Kanan premieres on August 14 and it is going to a dark territory.

That is because Kanan is starting to learn more of the drug game that his mother Raquel Thomas introduced him too. Raquel now controls every aspect of the product distribution due to Unique getting framed for murdering Officer Howard on the previous season. I must say, Patina Miller brings a fearsome presence whenever she is on the screen portraying Raquel.
Everything from her acting, delivery of lines, and mannerisms, makes me suspend my disbelief to see how strong and intimidating of a character Raquel is as she is the boss in town.

There are also more stories that are going to be fleshed out during this season of Power Book III: Raising Kanan. Jukebox might be moving forward with her singing career, Lou and Marvin doing whatever they can to prove their loyalty to the family (even on the dinner table as they all talked about it), and Officer Howard being alive. Howard survived the gunshot wound that was inflicted by Kanan. But that came with a price as he does not remember anything from that night. Could Howard be doing this to protect Kanan since he is his father? We will have to see.

There is something about Unique that the viewers will be looking forward to by the end of the episode. I cannot spoil what transpired, but Unique might be looking for revenge soon. Joey Bada$$ joined Power Book III: Raising Kanan on the previous season and I had no clue that he had it in him to play as a villain. Unique is one of the best villains in the Power universe and I am curious to see where his story is going.

Overall, this is a strong opener for the second season of Power Book III: Raising Kanan. The dark and suspenseful period of the 1990’s in Queens, NY is all on display for this episode as Kanan is starting to evolve to the Kanan that we first seen on the original Power. Vacation time is over for the family as it is time to get back to the streets because Power Book III: Raising Kanan is back with a vengeance!

Exclusive: The Cast of STARZ’s P-Valley Talks Season Two [Video]

by Julian Cannon May 29, 2022
written by Julian Cannon
STARZ’S P-Valley is set to return on June 3rd. The season is going to pick up from the explosive finale over a few years ago.
It is safe to say that the wait was long as P-Valley’s filming schedule suffered multiple delays due to the ongoing pandemic. After all this time, fans will be fed well once P-Valley premieres.
P-Valley looks at the lives of exotic dancers in strip clubs, which are often portrayed in television shows and films. P-Valley is based on Katori Hall’s 2015 stage play and follows several characters trying to survive at Pynk nightclub while navigating personal problems. Although the show tackles serious topics like abuse, illness, homophobia, and transphobia, it keeps it light with pithy dialogue and loads of references to dirty south music, culture, and fashion.
The synopsis of the second season of P-Valley, provided by STARZ, is the following: “When darkness descends upon Chucalissa, errybody and they mama must fight tooth and talon to survive. While some take flight to perilous new heights, others dig in their stilettos and stand their ground no matter the cost. Back at The Pynk, Autumn and Uncle Clifford grapple for the throne as new blood shakes up the locker room. Meanwhile, with the casino’s fate hanging in the balance, the local political machine kicks into overdrive. In these unprecedented times, death and danger lurk around every corner.”
The Knockturnal recently got the chance to speak with Nicco Annan, Elarica Johnson, Brandee Evans, Shannon Thornton, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Parker Sawyers about the second season of P-Valley. The cast gave a great insight on what to expect for their characters and stories that will be fleshed out in multiple arcs. There is a large amount of information that was provided during these interviews. Check them out on the link below.
P-Valley’s second season will debut on June 3rd exclusively on STARZ.

News: Power Book III: Raising Kanan Season 2 Teaser Trailer Reveals Summer Return

by Julian Cannon May 27, 2022
written by Julian Cannon
A new teaser has been released today by STARZ and teases the second season premiere date of “Power Book III: Raising Kanan,” which is on August 14.
STARZ will launch new episodes every Sunday at midnight, as well as on its spectrum of streaming and on-demand platforms. Internationally, the company will launch STARZPLAY, a premium streaming platform available across its entire footprint in Europe, Latin America, and Japan.
Below is the official season two synopsis provided by STARZ:
“As we enter season two, Raquel ‘Raq’ Thomas has gained control over the city’s drug trade, but her son is slipping away. Kanan Stark returns to Queens uncertain of his future with the family business, and because of Detective Howard’s lingering secret, he’s even more uncertain of his past. Kanan searches for the truth while Raq boldly expands the business into hostile Mafia territory. Lou-Lou has other plans that revolve around his emerging record label, but Raq isn’t about to let his side hustle get in the way of her expansion. Although Marvin remains Raq’s loyal soldier, he struggles to earn Jukebox’s forgiveness and become the father she deserves. The ties that bind this family are becoming undone, but Raq will stop at nothing to hold them together.”
In addition to serving as co-creator and showrunner, Sascha Penn will continue executive producing with Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson and Courtney A. Kemp. Courtney A. Kemp and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson through G-Unit Film and Television, and Mark Canton through Atmosphere Entertainment MM executive produce the “Power” Universe series, along with Chris Selak, Shana Stein and Bart Wenrich from End of Episode.
STARZ also released the very first key art for the upcoming season of Power Book III: Raising Kanan as it features Raquel Thomas (Patina Miller) and Kanan Stark (Mekai Curtis). Other cast members include Omar Epps (“House,” “Love and Basketball”), London Brown (“Ballers”), Malcolm Mays (“Them,” “Snowfall”), Hailey Kilgore (“Amazing Stories”), Joey Bada$$ (“Two Distant Strangers”) and Shanley Caswell (The Conjuring). Antonio Ortiz (“High Fidelity,” “The Sinner”) has been promoted to series regular, returning as Shawn “Famous” Figueroa in season two.

Exclusive: High Town Cast and Crew Discuss Season 2

by Katherine Tinsley October 17, 2021
written by Katherine Tinsley

Sunday October 17, High Town returns with its second season on STARZ.

High Town uses the location of Cape Cod to explore the realities behind the current opioid crisis. The show offers a different perspective of Cape Cod and strays away from the traditionally preppy narrative. The series also offers a different depiction of addiction in America with has been heavily racialized over the decades.

High Town makes an active effort to show the domino effect of addition and the diversity of families impacted by it. The show goes beyond just showing the struggles of addiction and the challenges presented with sobriety, but captures the humanity and emotions behind the opioid crisis.

With addiction being politicized and often demonized, especially with the history of the crack epidemic, there was an awareness to make sure the cast reflected society. Rebecca Cutter explains that the show works against the assumption that the current opioid crisis and heroin epidemic solely affects small White towns. Actors Dohn Norwood and Atkins Estimond appreciate the show’s ability to capture both humanity and diversity of the opioid crisis. The lead character Jackie is both Latina and queer, and actress Monica Raymund takes pride in the ability to expand the representation for people who identify with the character and herself.  With the second season of the show the cast was able to grow with their characters while also expanding on the stories introduced in the previous season.

High Town is more than just a story about Cape Cod or the opioid crisis; the crime drama series offers suspense, mystery, consequences, and a realistic portrayal of the road to recovery.
