Restaurant Review: Soho Diner

by Megan D'Souza September 13, 2022
written by Megan D'Souza

Amidst the buzz of fashion week in Soho this weekend, we grabbed a break and a bite to eat at Soho Diner. Perfectly situated under the Soho Grand hotel, a few minutes walk from fashion week hub Spring Studios, the Soho Diner was a great spot to unwind from the day’s activities and inspirations. We weren’t the only ones who thought so, clearly, as the 50s themed diner was packed with models, editors, and fashion fanatics.

When you walk into Soho Diner, you feel like you’ve instantly stepped back in time. Wait – scratch that a little – into a beautifully curated version of the past: salmon colored upholstered booths, cherry wood finishes, a Crosley jukebox, and vintage signs indicating menu items. Soho Diner “pays homage to the great American dining staple: a place where every stripe of the community can have a quality meal with friends and family.” But their modern touches remind you that you’re in a place with the charm of the past but the welcoming attitudes of modern day, rather than a perfect carbon copy of an imperfect past world.

Just like their ambiance, Soho Diner’s menu reflects the beauty of modern American cuisine and the classic comforts of staple diner items. From their classic burger and milkshake to a half dozen oyster starter and a grapefruit brulee, every type of eater will find their fix here. Since we went for brunch, we ordered the Smoked Salmon and Potato Latkes, the Steak and Eggs, and started off with a few oysters. And of course, some milkshakes – how could we not at a diner?!

To start off, our milkshakes came out first – an orange julius and a vanilla classic shake. The orange julius was creamy and citrusy, but still very light and refreshing even with its sweet flavor profile. To round it out, the vanilla milkshake was thick, decadent, and delicious. An absolute must try – they were out of the strawberry and chocolate flavors when we visited, so we can’t wait to stop by next time to try those.

After we finished our drinks, the oyster starter arrived. The east coast oysters were fresh and delicious – a must have during the summer season. They were served with the classic mignonette, spicy cucumber relish, harissa cocktail sauce, and a lemon wedge. All the accoutrements you could possibly want to accompany a set of oysters. Next up, our main dishes: the Potato Latkes with Smoked Salmon, and the Ham Steak and Eggs. The latkes came with herbed creme fraiche and poached eggs; their creaminess paired wonderfully with the salty smoked salmon. The steak and eggs arrived with specklings of chimichurri on a giant cut of pork, and topped with two sunny side up eggs – definitely plan on leftovers!

We left the Soho Diner full and happy, and can’t wait to go back to try the rest of the items on their menu. Learn more about Soho Diner here, and click here to make your reservation!

DRESS DAPPER FOR THE DERBY: An Old Forester Pop-up Shop Experience.

by Serena Khahera May 3, 2022
written by Serena Khahera

The theme of the event was “dapper” and everyone showed out. Old Forester recently celebrated an annual Turtle Derby in preparation for the Kentucky Derby and will also be continuing this tradition by launching a yearly inaugural pop-up shop event coined “Dress Dapper for the Derby”. The event took place in SoHo and highlighted tons of small businesses and local designers. The idea behind this was to create a platform that will enable them to partner with like-minded brands and prepare clients with a stylish fit. Along with the small business pop ups the event featured live DJ sets, electric turtle racing, and Old Forester Mint Juleps. Old Forester is Brown-Forman’s founding brand, founded in 1870 by George Garvin Brown. Brown believed Old Forester was so pure and consistent that he sealed it, signed it, and pledged “There is nothing better in the market.”

The businesses in attendance that were being highlighted were The Tailory, Flamekeepers Hat Club, and MONA ASSEMI Jewelry. The Tailory New York is an appointment-only, women-owned, and operated bespoke clothing company that combines modern fashion design with the heritage art of custom-tailoring. They believe that custom suits are genderless and cater in equal measure to men, women, and non-binary individuals.

The Flamekeepers Hat Club is an upscale, locally owned Harlem, NY store offering an array of sophisticated hats for men & women, in many styles, they believe in passing the torch of style to the next generation.

MONA ASSEMII founded her namesake line combining inspiration from old Persian culture and modern American lifestyle. The NY based designer combines sculptural clean lines, sumptuous crystals, and elegant metals to create a liquid dripping aesthetic for her signature collection. Her most current collections include unusual shapes and sculptural protruding elements. All Mona’s pieces are handmade in New York City and are eco friendly and sustainable.

The event was put on in partnership with LITO Creative. LITO Creative is a creative consultancy that values building genuine connections, developing communities of engaged creative talent, and prioritizing innovation all in the name of showcasing art and shaping culture. Through experiential marketing solutions, social media strategy, production, and talent sourcing, LITO Creative helps brands build and share their stories the world.

On The Scene: Soho’s Color Factory Unveils New Holiday Exhibit

by Sydney Hargrove December 11, 2021
written by Sydney Hargrove

Bright lights, ice cream, every color imaginable, and the most Instagram worthy ballpit in the city. You don’t need anything but an Insta account to know exactly what we’re talking about. Since it’s NYC opening in August 2017, The Color Factory has been making headlines for its unique immersive experiences. The walk through museum features sweet treats, a drawing booth where you can learn a new thing or two about a friend, multiple music themed rooms, a floor map to find out your inner secret color, and so much more. The most iconic feature has to be it’s ballpits, every color factory location from Texas to California has featured one, all with their own unique color and design  The Soho location in NYC is special in its own way, as the baby blue sea of balls makes you feel like you’re cruising through the ocean all in the comfort of the city.

Nothing is more special than the holidays in NYC, and The Color Factory was decked out for the occasion. Full of trees, lights and festivity, the already exciting rooms featured a warm sense of holiday cheer. The Factory was transformed for the holiday season, everything down to their iconic color pallets had been changed for a new immersive experience. The holidays are the most colorful time of year, so it only makes sense for the most  colorful place in the city to match.

The Confetti Room

My first visit to the factory was in the summer of 2019, and I was surprised at just how much time and dedication went into transforming the place for this magical time of year. A room that had previously held complimentary beach balls now was covered from floor to ceiling in loose confetti and colorful Christmas trees. There were cameras all over the ceilings to create adorable videos, and we had the best time throwing confetti around the bright colorful room

Even the iconic ballpit got its own holiday makeover. Guests can find the cutest candy cane and peppermint pool floats hanging around, amazing for pictures and lazing around alike. It’s the ideal place to sit and bask in the holiday cheer.

Peppermint Floats In The Ballpit

The Ball Pit also features a very special limited edition appearance from Santa Claus, and you know he reps the iconic color pallet as well. Santa appearances will begin on December 17th.

In addition to all of the aesthetics and fun, the holidays are a time of giving and The Color Factory does their part. they are partnering with NYC-based nonprofit Art Start, an organization dedicated to nurturing the voices, hearts, and minds of historically marginalized youth through art. In the museum, you’ll find an on-site gifting wall. The wall invites guests  to donate varying amounts of money to help purchase  gifts for students of the arts. Guests can send art students gifts such as art supply bags, sketch pads, and even MetroCards to travel to and from workshops. It truly stresses the importance of art in our lives.

You can experience the magic of The Color Factory’s immersive colorful life holiday exhibit yourself! See it from December 1st to the 24th, find tickets here!
