The Haunted Hotel at The Ned NoMad Returns with Star-Studded Halloween Bash

by Kyle Mattone October 30, 2023
written by Kyle Mattone
G-Eazy
Evan Mock

The Ned Nomad celebrated Halloween with a takeover by The Box on October 27th and 28th in New York City.

The Haunted Hotel at The Ned NoMad results from a collaboration between party-maven Richie Akiva and The Box’s experiential production company, Outside The Box Amusements. This immersive experience marked the second consecutive year of spine-tingling entertainment, ensuring guests experienced a Halloween celebration like no other.

On the first night, rapper G-Eazy led the festivities, celebrating with friends and Ned members amid the eerie ambiance of The Haunted Hotel. Festivities continued on October 28th, with models, actors, musicians and VIPs filling the haunted hallways and dancefloor. The guest list included notable attendees such as Evan Mock, rapper Maino, fighter Dillon Danis and more joining Akiva and The Box’s Giza Selimi for two nights of spine-tingling fun.

The Haunted Hotel at The Ned NoMad featured a meticulously designed transformation of the hotel. Classic horror films inspired the setting, immersing guests in scenes like a devil-led poker game, an orgasm room, zombie bellhops, and more. The entire hotel, including The Magic Room, The Library, Little Ned Bar, and every nook and cranny, transformed into a frightening world that left guests in for a frightening treat.

Guests enjoyed flowing libations from Cierto Tequila and danced the night away to the beats of a stellar lineup of in-demand DJs, including Michael Simpson, DJ Truth, and DJ Soni withanEYE. Late-night pop-ins by Al3x Crush and DJ Reign added to the excitement of keeping partygoers on the dance floor well into the evening.

With a star-studded guest list, a spine-chilling atmosphere, and some incredible visual and auditory performances, The Haunted Hotel at The Ned NoMad made for an unforgettable Halloween celebration for all in attendance.

A First Look at Minase’s Limited Edition Urushi Series

by Jaylin De Guzman October 26, 2023
written by Jaylin De Guzman

On Saturday, October 23, Minase showcased their Urushi Maki-e Hakose series at this year’s Windup Watch Fair at The Altman Building in Chelsea. While many of their products are special, their secret weapon can only be described as luxury itself. Urushi lacquer comes from the sap of the very valuable, but incredibly toxic Urushi Tree. Minase’s delicacy towards transforming the lacquer into such breathtaking dials is what representative Kelly Henriksen says makes Minase unique.

The Japanese-inspired designs honor the beauty of nature with their blending of elegant artistry and high-quality Swiss craftsmanship. At first glance, a Minase watch is undoubtedly gorgeous, but the detail in construction is what sets the brand apart. In just the dial itself, it takes layering five separate pieces to puzzle together. Minase prides itself on mastering the labor-intensive “Sallaz” technique, giving each watch that smooth polished finish.

Minase challenges the dichotomy of past and future as their pieces are classics made to last a lifetime. Representative Sven Erik Henriksen states, “The main point is the uniqueness of the designs. They are not getting their inspiration from any other watches or companies, it’s a brand-new concept based upon nature and geometry.”

One of Minase’s biggest inspirations comes from geometry as their Windows Design redefines the sophistication and beauty in mathematics. As seen in the watch above, the rectangular case symbolizes the imperfection of the earthly world while the round dial is a metaphor for infinity and calmness. Henriksen’s interpretation of saying, “Life will not always be joy, but that does not mean it can’t be interesting and beautiful,” is a perfect description of Minase’s effect.
In an industry wealthy with innovation and expertise, Minase champions their goal of individualism and traditional techniques. Though the company plans to release only 500 watches from the Urushi collection worldwide, Henriksen assures us that there will be more to come. With their incomparable design and detail, the luxury watch industry can expect its future to be safe in Minase’s hands.

Saturday, October 7, 2023. Duggal Greenhouse, Brooklyn, New York. — Saturday morning rain showers fell hard and heavy in the borough of Brooklyn; but it didn’t stop the main event from happening on Flushing Avenue.  The annual cultural mecca for Black and Brown creatives, CultureCon, opened its lines to the likes of designers, brand influencers, culture benders, film talents, small business owners, media press outlets and many more. CultureCon, founded in 2019, is the fastest growing conference and brings together creatives and changemakers of color that aim to elevate their social and professional networks. These bountiful creatives intend to make a mark on the culture and within the communities they serve. In an effort to keep the focus “community centered” the conference sets its sights on celebrating prominent and innovative voices leading the way. It is their hope to inspire attendees to make notable impacts in their respective lanes, creative causes and to become an infectious impact on the world at large, as a BIPOC creative-thought leader.

The two day event featured panelists that discussed navigating and managing the pressures in the film and entertainment industries; obtaining careers in the growing field of tech and various degrees of corporate spaces. Other major topics offered insights on personal branding; overcoming the socio-economic factors that impede or inspire creativity; investments, crowdfunding for business and managing personal finances with financial gurus such as Financial Educator and New York Times Bestseller, Tiffany “the Budgetnista”; as well as discussions on maintaining self care while launching brands and building empires.

This year the 2023 CultureCon brought on a new facet to their ever growing pilgrimage, now including in its activation booths, a Creative Career Job Fair that allowed the attendees to meet one on one with recruiters from: Amazon Studios, Clinique, Max, NBCUniversal, Google, Walmart, Shea Moisture, and Kickstarter. TV host and internet icon, Ziwe closed day one with a hilarious conversation alongside, DeAndre Brown  AKA The Corporate Baddie. “Black Friend: Essays,” and her journey from being an intern with big dreams to a certified boss in the midst of her dream career.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK – OCTOBER 07: Lola Brooke speaks onstage at CultureCon NY 2023 on October 07, 2023 in New York City. (Photo by Arturo Holmes/Getty Images)

On day one, I found myself richly inspired by panelist, Rap recording artist, Lola Brooke, who eagerly shared her love of performing on stage. The “Don’t Play With” lyricist lit up as she discussed that she knew in her heart she’d always wanted to perform; she said  that before bed at night, she recalls falling asleep with music in her ears and dreaming that she was on stage. She expressed staying grounded and knowing that every decision that she’d made “fell on me” and that remaining centered was above all else, priority for her.

Day one of CultureCon lunch consisted of jollof rice ( a tomato and rice-based dish that is widely eaten across West and Central Africa) sweet plantains, gold coast slaw,  grilled peri-peri chicken with a Bissap Hibiscus juice from African Chop House, and yes it was delicious. Other featured restaurants included the Crabby Shack, Ras Plant Based, OxKale, Cafe Rue Dix, File Gumbo Bar, Aunt Et uncles, Charles Pan Fried Chicken, the James Beard nominated chef and Harlem icon’s soul food for the soul pick, and Chef Kwame’s Patty Palace.

By the close of Day one’s festivities, my  black mesh CultureCon tote was full to the brim with goodies.  I collected my goodies from Clinique whose volumizing mascara and skin moisturizer has instantly become a new favorite in my makeup arsenal; magazine giveaways (and cookies) from the largest publisher in North America, Dotdash Meredith; free beverages from CocaCola and SmartWater; and an adorable “Black Men We Love You” men’s care kit from Shea Moisture.

Let me know, did you get your Culture on this weekend or are you planning to attend the Fourth Annual Culture Con? Let me know your thoughts and stay tuned for Day 2 of Culture Con!
