On the Scene: Kid Cudi’s ENTERGALATIC Premiere

Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi brought a celebration of Black love to New York on September 28 to commemorate the premiere of his new Netflix animated series, “ENTERGALACTIC.”

With help from love connector, Bumble, and Netflix’s Strong Black Lead team; the festivities kicked off with a Black Love Brunch hosted by ENTERGALATIC star, Teyana Taylor. Kid Cudi, who voices  the shows artistic protagonist “Jabari,” was in attendance alongside his co-star Jessica Williams; who voices Jabari’s love interest, a photographer named “Meadow.” Williams, no stranger to the rom-com genre, is also know for her role in HBO’s Love Life. Going from “Mia,” to “Meadow,” Williams described ENTERGALACTIC in two words: “Juicy and funny.” “Juicyfunny,” she exclaimed in a brief interview, making the two words one.

Executive producers Kenya Barris, Karina Manashill, and Ian Edelman were also in attendance during the brunch held at Catch Steak. DJ couple, DJ Mos and DJ Kiss, set the tone for a dance filled afternoon before the showing of a never before seen ENTERGALATIC trailer; a little tease before the premier.

That evening, the red carpet was rolled out for cast, crew and various VIPS before the series premiere held at New York’s Paris Theatre. More cast mates, including Ty Dolla $ign, and executive producers such as Dennis Cummings and Fletcher Moules came out to celebrate with Vagina macaroons (a nod to an ENTERGALACTIC episode), drinks, mini bowls of pasta and more at Nebula NYC.

ENTERGALACTIC premieres on Netflix on Friday, September 30. Filled with music, fashion and art, the series captures the euphoric feeling of being high (via weed) and falling in love; all while serving as a love letter to New York City.

Film Review: “Wendell and Wild”

I love desserts. I never thought that that would be a statement that was needed to be said but as I venture further and further into adulthood and my dreaded thirties, I have noticed and unsettling trend: desserts are as unfashionable as cowboy hats in Times Square. I mention this because Netflix’s recent forays into animation have very much struck me with a sinfully sweet aftertaste. Let’s think about Arcane. Much like the tiramisu at Pecora Bianca, it’s not the reason you showed up but it’s the keynote to end off a great experience. Very few subscribe to Netflix for its animated content but it proved that it’s more than just a cherry on top, it’s a palpable final note.

Now not all desserts are great. For example, much to the chagrin of many fall lovers, I can’t stand pumpkin pie. But Wendell & Wild, the most recent Netflix animated film, is not quite that. It’s something like Paris Baguette – it’s like and fluffy and slightly sweet, but not quite the sugary punch you’d expect. You know dessert would be a satisfying meal, but you at least expect something that could excite your senses without destroying too many teeth. You don’t need it to fill you with nutrients. In the film world, that’s what Nolan and Tarantino are here for. Wendell & Wild, especially given the creative minds behind it, left me feeling a bit disappointed and bored while altogether remembering “right, this is a movie for children, after all”.

The strongest part about this film is the creative mind behind it all: Henry Selick. His animated art style is by far one of the most inventive visual experiences in the world of film today. He manages to push the boundaries of his iconic clay style animation to the limits and just when you think he’s exhausted the limits of his medium, he goes even further and creates something entirely new. He wasn’t the only creative talent at play here. In fact, there were many incredibly talented voice actors who were able to help bring this film to life, for example, Jordan Peele and Keegan Michael-Key. Their performances helped to carry the movie and it’s hard to imagine this movie working without them.

Back to talking about desserts. The reason why animated children’s movies and especially Wendell & Wild instantly brought my mind to think of dessert was because like many of the overpriced bakeries that are speckled across Manhattan, they look better than they taste. Every detail is precise, prim, and pretty but leaves me longing for the unassuming masterpiece that is my mother’s baked goods. The one thing Wendell & Wild has is that polish. It is an incredibly inventive and beautiful movie and it’s a joy to watch. It is a quintessential exemplar of the phrase “every frame a painting”. However the themes are explored at a surface level, character development is so rushed as to feel overlooked, and the plot can best be described at simplistic. Pixar showed that animated films can explore deeper themes in a real way nearly thirty years ago, but to compare the two even with Pixar’s weak recent releases would be a disservice. In the end, Wendell & Wild is a beautiful mediocre pastry in a world where Michelin starred outputs has been the established bar for years.

It’s got the fashion, the sexy singles, and yes… the universal heartbreak. They’re calling Netflix’s Uncoupled: Sex and the City for the LGBTQ community. Cocreators Darren Star and Jeffrey Richman were inspired after several long-term relationships around them “imploded in a very specific way. It’s your worst nightmare but also a great jumping-off point for a romantic comedy.”
Let’s set the scene… NYC real estate agent Michael (Neil Patrick Harris… Yes. The NPH. Bless.) is blindsided by his breakup at the birthday party he’s arranged for his partner of 17 YEARS, Colin (Tuc Watkins). Suddenly, Michael is thrust into this world of 40-something singledom. Dating apps, risque photos, and my GOD this all sounds exhausting! How do you single people do it?!
Don’t fret though because NPH’s existential crisis comes with an entourage of BFFs that will keep you cackling! Suzanne (Tisha Campbell), Billy (Emerson Brooks), Stanley (Brooks Ashmanskas), and Claire (Marcia Gay Harden) are there to support Michael and show him the ropes. And hopefully… salvage what they can of his liver!
We ask the cast what it’s like to work with Doogie Howser, M.D. and what makes Uncoupled so unique in a world flooded with content! Spoiler alert: It’s NPH!

On The Scene: Press Previews of San Diego Comic Con’s Activation Sites of HBO Max’s House of the Dragon, Dungeons & Dragons, Netflix’s The Gray Man, and more

San Diego Comic Con returns this week for the first time in three years. The attendees are eager to come down to San Diego to reunite with their friends, purchase their exclusive merchandise, go to the Hall H panels, and more importantly, go to the activation sites outside the convention.
A number of television and movie studios have a large presence during the week of San Diego Comic Con. However, there are a few that decided to not attend the big show. I was able to preview a number of the off sites before it became available to the public!
“House of the Dragon: The Dragon’s Den,” a four-day fan experience at Comic-Con, is an interactive experience in which attendees will be guided through a ceremonial dragon hatching experience that will provide a unique fan experience. By stepping from our world into the sights and sounds of King’s Landing and interacting with the people of the city, each participant will have the opportunity to experience a slice of life from a Targaryen’s perspective, selecting their own dragon egg, and demonstrating that they are worthy of bonding with a dragon.
 After proving themselves true Targaryens, each participant will hatch their personalized, virtual dragon egg in a new augmented reality app, House of the Dragon: DracARys, so they can “raise” their dragon at home. In conjunction with Niantic Inc and produced by The Mill, House of the Dragon: DracARys will be available for download from the Apple App Store and Google Play app stores starting from July 20. In “House of the Dragon: The Dragon’s Den” participants will have an exclusive opportunity to experience the app’s dragon hatching features before the app is released globally to the public on July 25th, when the full functionality of the app will become available.
In my opinion, it was an excellent experience. Furthermore, I should mention that I dropped one of the eggs and was scolded by one of the actors on the site for it after I dropped it. For Game of Thrones fans, this is a great place to visit.

A high-energy, immersive escape experience set on a tram car with a 20-second chase scene inspired by the epic chase scene in the new Netflix film The Gray Man, called ‘The Gray Man Training Program’ will take you through the journey. In a test of skill, strength, and speed, fans will have to prove they have what it takes to become the next Gray Man in a race against the clock in order to transport a top secret file from the tram to safety before the mercenaries catch up and win the jackpot. 

There will be a variety of obstacles to overcome, and special effects to experience, as well as a rooftop sprint to culminate the heart-pounding mission, where fans will race against the clock to complete the mission as fast as they can. It is guaranteed that fans will leave with a badass custom social takeaway that puts them at the center of their own action movie.
The one-of-a-kind Tavern Experience by Paramount Pictures and eOne, in partnership with a team of Dungeons & Dragons fans, will be on display at San Diego Comic-Con 2022, setting the stage for a fantastical adventure set in the world of Dungeons & Dragons. A fan can take a peek at the world of DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: HONOR AMONG THIEVES, a new movie from Paramount and eOne that will be in theaters in March 2023, at the Tavern in Hollywood. Located in the tavern, it is also possible to find the first official poster of the film which was created by Boss Logic!
This immersive experience will allow visitors to experience a 20-minute, immersive encounter filled with unique photo opportunities, exclusive takeaways, and a chance to savor a Dragon Brew while interacting with your favorite Dungeons & Dragons characters and creatures, plus a few surprise moments you won’t want to miss.

 During the Dragon Brew experience, Quincy’s Tavern has been tasked with the recipe development of the tavern’s Dragon Brew (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), which will be served to guests during the event.
