Rapper Slatt Zy is putting Chattanooga on the map!
Chattanooga, Tennessee is home to Slatt Zy, a rapper so talented that 100k Management (YNW Melly) signed him after only two music videos & singles. At only 18, Slatt went from working at Hardees to traveling to Florida with YNW Melly’s cosign. Slatt started making music under a year ago and is already is on the fast-track to success, but with a family-like Slatt’s its no surprise. Slatt’s father was a part of signing group, New Beginnings, along with Usher in his youth and almost all of his 11 brothers and sisters sing. Slatt Zy has the ability to convey his pain and sadness through storytelling while seamlessly transitioning between rapping and singing demonstrated perfectly in his recent release, “Understand Me,” where he raps, “Bitches laughing I got two pairs of jeans, 2011 I lost my cousin dead on the scene.Slatt Zy has the ability to convey his pain and sadness through storytelling while seamlessly transitioning between rapping and singing demonstrated perfectly in his recent release, “Understand Me,” where he raps, “Bitches laughing I got two pairs of jeans, 2011 I lost my cousin dead on the scene.”
Slatt is gearing up to release his second mixtape following the release of Zy Story, which dropped earlier this year. In addition to signing with 100k Management, Slatt’s gone on tour with Rod Wave, performed with Lil Durk and played ball with Trippie Red. Find out more about Slatt’s story below.
The Kncokturnal: what was it like growing up with 11 brothers & sisters?
Slatt Zy: It’s pretty fun because you never get bored and there’s always someone to talk to.
The Kncokturnal: Many of your family members work in music, did they influence you to pursue music?
Slatt Zy: My father was in this group called New Beginnings and most of my siblings sing
The Kncokturnal: When did you write your first rap or freestyle for the first time?
Slatt Zy: I was getting drunk with my brothers and we were just freestyling – when my brother got out of jail he just pushed me to do it when I was 16. My brother got locked up but I had my other brothers around me.
The Kncokturnal: You went from working at Hardee’s to signing with 100k Management. when did everything change?
Slatt Zy: I had made one song off of a paycheck from Hardees, with that song I paid $30 for an hour of studio time. I had written a song already, went to the studio. When I got my next paycheck two weeks later, on Tuesday I paid for the video. The video did better than expected and I got a message from YNW Melly on Facebook. At first, I didn’t believe it because Melly locked up, but it was his management on Melly’s account. After seeing that text I said, “fuck it Ima drop the next video.” Kept working at Hardees paid for another session, another video. After dropping another video his management brought me down to Florida and now me and Melly have the same manager.
The Kncokturnal: What was it like shooting with Drewfilmedit?
Slatt Zy: Drew cool as hell. It’s fun working with 100k Management period because they good people. They real like authentic. Every move I’ve made with them is great.
The Knockturnal: How did it feel signing with 100k Management?
Slatt Zy: I saw it as step one, like ok now its time to go to step 2 become a mainstream artist, step 3 become a legend, that’s the way I looked at it.
The Kncokturnal: What have been your 3 biggest highlights from this past year?
Slatt Zy: I went on tour with Rod Wave, I’ve been on stage with Lil Durk two times and I played ball with Trippie and chilled at his crib.
The Kncokturnal: Can we expect a Trippie Redd collaboration on the way?
Slatt Zy: Most definitely I’d love to collab with him. What’s crazy is that the way he sounds in his music is how he is in real life. The way is music videos are – if you go to his house that’s how his house is, it’s devilish as fuck. He a demon for real.
The Kncokturnal: Can you talk about what you’ve got on the way?
Slatt Zy: I’ve got a mixtape dropping this month, I’ve got a couple singles before that. On the tape, you’ll hear everything, what I been through, where I come from, what goes on in East Lake. It’s telling you what Chattanooga is and what goes on in Chattanooga
The Kncokturnal: How has your life changed since signing?
Slatt Zy: Fake love and I can’t go everywhere by myself now. I used to be out. I just can’t do too much stuff now that I used to.
