Power Book III: Raising Kanan star Patina Miller was celebrated at the Reel Works 25th Anniversary Change Makers Gala, where she reflected on her career, the importance of mentorship, and the collaborative spirit behind filmmaking.
The event brought together artists and industry professionals to honor individuals making an impact through storytelling and creative leadership.
During her interview with The Knockturnal on the red carpet, Miller shared her surprise and gratitude for receiving the recognition. She described the honor as deeply meaningful, especially because it celebrated work she genuinely loves doing.
“I was shocked. but I feel great,” said Miller. “Anytime you’re recognized for the work that you love to do is always amazing thing.”
Miller also praised the mission of Reel Works and acknowledged the organization’s partnership with Starz for supporting opportunities in film and television.
Miller also spoke about the standout fashion featured in the hit series Raising Kanan. Rather than naming a favorite look, she credited costume designer Tsigie White for consistently delivering exceptional work throughout the series. According to Miller, every outfit helped shape the world of the show and contributed to the authenticity of the characters.
When asked what advice she would offer young filmmakers, Miller focused on the importance of kindness, discipline, and teamwork. She emphasized that filmmaking depends on collaboration and mutual respect. In her view, every person on a set plays an essential role in bringing a project to life.
White also spoke to The Knockturnal during the red carpet, sharing her excitement about being recognized and attending her first red carpet celebration. She explained that her approach to costume design is rooted in extensive research, from studying family history to understanding cultural details that help recreate an authentic 1990s aesthetic for Raising Kanan.
Discussing her creative partnership with Miller, White described the actress as a “powerhouse” performer as she approached Miller’s character design almost like a ‘superhero villain,’ using bold and carefully crafted wardrobe choices to reflect the character’s commanding presence on screen.
“Patina Miller is a powerhouse and I as a costume designer needed to match her energy and so every day, she challenged me and I met the challenge,” said White.
Rafael Espinal, the Commissioner of the New York City Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment, reflected on her longstanding contributions to New York’s entertainment industry. He said it was rewarding to continue seeing her honored for the impact she has made through her work and commitment to creative communities in New York.
“We presented her with an award a few years ago because of her work, her commitment to the city, and her commitment to the industry. It’s great to see her continuing to be honored for her contributions,” said Espinal.
