Off-Broadway Takes The Stage At 32nd Annual Lucille Lortel Awards

The 32nd Annual Lucille Lortel Awards were presented last evening, at the Skirball Center for Performing Arts.

Taran Killam, SNL Alum and freshly minted Broadway actor, hosted the evening with charm, humor, and a fast-pace attitude. Right from the start, the tone of the room was pure joy, everyone celebrating their comrades and taking the night to step away from the world outside. Stage, television, and film actors gathered to honor one another, not only as artists, but close friends.

The biggest surprise of the evening was the award for Best Musical. Most assumed that the on and off-Broadway hit, Dear Evan Hansen, would sweep the 2017 Lortels; this was not the case. Atlantic Theatre Company’s The Bands Visit took away Best Actress in a Musical, and Best Musical, sending an overwhelmingly supportive shock-wave through the audience.

Not only was light night charged with celebration, but many artists took their time on stage to speak out politically. The 2016-2017 season has been filled with projects that touch on our political climate, and force audience members to think about the frightening world around us. Actors and production members from Oslo, The Bands Visit, and Taran Killam himself, spoke out beautifully, leaving a lasting impression on the evening.

Below is the list of the 2017 Lucille Lortel Award nominees in its entirety. Winners have been bolded:
