The Knockturnal spoke with director Brock Bodell and actress Dakota Gorman about their new Shudder horror film, Hellcat, and the intense physical and emotional journey behind it.

Shudder’s Hellcat is a new horror film about a woman who wakes up on a moving camping trailer and finds herself inflicted with a massive wound. She hears her captor’s voice as they drive down the highway, and her desperation grows as she searches for escape and relief from her pain. This film is a shudder original and Brock Bodell’s debut feature starring Dakota Gorman, Todd Terry, James Austin Johnson, Liz Atwater, Jordan Mullins, Elise Gilbert, and Janey Ivey.

When we interviewed Director Brock Bodell and Actress Dakota Gorman about the new film, Brock Bodell told The Knockturnal about the confidence and action it took to direct his first film. He said, “The green light happened when I gave it to myself.” He advises aspiring filmmakers, “You have to say, ‘I’m making this movie on this date,’ and nothing is going to get in between me and that moment.” We also talked about making this film in his longtime home state of Tennessee.

Bodell said this film is more than horror, “This movie is very much steeped in existential family drama. That was always the heartbeat of it.” Gorman told us about her reaction to reading the script for the first time, “reading something and getting excited by it and sort of overwhelmed by it was the first indicator of, ‘Okay, this is something I get to really dive into and play.’” Her character has an intensity the entire film and that’s what excited her about this performance. She explained, “I love horror so much and I love the physicality of horror.” The intensity is clearly seen on screen from Dakota and the rest of Shudder’s Hellcat cast.

Hellcat is available this Friday on Shudder.
