The Knockturnal: Duplicity is your first feature film—what was the most exciting part of this experience?

Nick Barrotta: Being my first feature film – the whole experience was exciting!! From working with Tyler again – and the stakes being even higher to working on set with such a talented cast. It was an experience I’ll always cherish. A dream come true!

The Knockturnal: Can you tell us about your character, Sam, and his role in the story?

Barrotta: Sam is a producer at the local news station where Fela works. He is well-connected and very passionate about his job. After learning about the murder of Fela’s husband — Sam is dedicated to helping Marley get to the bottom of it. Sam alongside Shannon (Fela’s co-anchor) step up when they are needed the most!

The Knockturnal: How did working on Duplicity differ from your experience on The Oval?

Barrotta: There were a lot of differences but it also felt like I was back home at Tyler Perry Studios! What I did love and was a lot different than an Oval production was being out and about all over Atlanta on-location. There was a lot more Hollywood magic on the film set which was so fun.

The Knockturnal: What was it like collaborating with a cast that includes Kat Graham, Tyler Lepley, and Meagan Tandy?

Barrotta: This cast was special. I have great respect and admiration for this line-up, so to be able to work alongside them was incredible. There were a few times on set where I was just watching as a fan and said to myself “Wow, this is a talented group!” We really all got along so well off-camera and I think that translates.

The Knockturnal: Without giving too much away, what can viewers expect from Duplicity?

Barrotta: Viewers can expect to be on the edge of their seats! In true Tyler Perry fashion, they can expect a lot of twists and turns they are not ready for! It’s a journey that will have you holding your breath until the very end! I’m excited to see how the audience responds!

The Knockturnal: You’ve been playing Allan for six seasons—how has the role challenged you as an actor?

Barrotta: It’s challenged me in every way – but the best way! A Tyler Perry Production is unlike any other. He moves at an unbelievable speed so you have to stay ready and it’s one MAYBE two takes before moving on to the next scene. I like to say The Oval has been like an actors boot camp for me! I’ve learned so much and am so grateful for that.

The Knockturnal: The Oval has a dedicated fan base—what’s been your most surprising or memorable fan interaction?

Barrotta: I really do have to shout out The Oval fans. When I tell you they have been locked in and loyal for SIX seasons – they have. All fan interactions have been memorable but I think the most surprising was when Beyoncé’s Mom, Tina Knowles approached me at a party and asked for a picture! She said she loves the show. It was a cool moment.

The Knockturnal: You have a background in broadcast journalism—do you ever see yourself returning to hosting or interviewing?

Barrotta: Absolutely! Hosting has always been a passion of mine. I see a lot of actors, hosting now and vice versa and I hope to get to a point where I can do both at a high level!

The Knockturnal: You’re also a business owner with two restaurants on Long Island—how did you and your family get into the restaurant industry?

Barrotta: My brothers Zack and Michael and our business partner Ryan had an incredible idea behind The Ivy Kitchen and Bar and Barrotta’s Supper Club! Two fun places with two totally different vibes! Huntington is a great place and growing up there we wanted to make it even better!! It’s amazing to have businesses in town – and awesome to see people enjoying themselves.

The Knockturnal: What’s your favorite dish at Barrotta’s Supper Club?

Barrotta: I love the Calamari and the burger is also phenomenal. The specialty cocktails are also so good. Go see for yourself!!

The Knockturnal:  Fitness is clearly important to you—what’s your go-to routine for staying in shape?

Barrotta: I workout 5-6 days a week with my trainer Tyler Brown at 8well. We focus on conditioning and strength training. Each day we focus on different workouts and movements. Working out is just as important for my mind as it is for my body!

With Duplicity on the horizon, what’s next for you? Any dream roles or projects you’d love to take on?

Barrotta: I hope to keep growing in this TV and Film space. The last few years have been so good to me. With that said, I’ve lived in more Drama-like projects between The Oval and Duplicity. I’d love to step into a different genre. A Romantic Comedy has always been the dream!
