2023 Make Equality Reality Gala: A Celebration of The Fight for Women’s Equality

by Megan D'Souza October 17, 2023
written by Megan D'Souza

Equality Now, an organization dedicated to advocating for the human rights of women and girls across the world, held their annual gala on Wednesday night at Gustavino’s. Under a backdrop of the glittering Queensboro bridge at sunset, poet Rupi Kaur won the 2023 Changemaker award and delivered an inspiring call-to-action speech.

Held on International Day of the Girl, the Make Equality Reality Gala celebrates the progress made toward a more gender equal world and all who fight for that future. To date, Equality Now has changed over 70 laws around the world. Since 1992, they have been fighting to achieve legal equality, end sexual exploitation and violence, and end culturally normalized harmful practices towards women and girls. The organization’s Director, Mona Sinha, told us the organization means a lot to her because “as a young girl growing up in India, [she] saw the discrimination firsthand,” and thinks that “the law is the foundation to securing women’s rights.” She joined Equality Now because she’s “more interested in systemic change that is binding and secure” than something that only lasts for a year or two. Tonight’s event is a way for Equality Now to “showcase their work in a positive, happy way, because it is very challenging work.

Rupi Kaur, who won the 2023 Changemaker award (given last year to the icon Gloria Steinem), is a poet whose work has transformed the lives of women and given voice to many who were previously unable to share their experiences. Her book, Milk and Honey, is among the top 10 banned books in the United States due to its discussion of sexual harm. She knows more than anyone how powerful our voices are, and how they “threaten those who are more than happy to take away those powers.”

She engaged the room with her intelligence and charm, encouraging art for resistance despite censorship as a “beautiful act of rebellion against a world that undermines us at every turn.” Despite oppression worldwide, she assured everyone that “young girls will always find a way to survive; their resilience is unparalleled” and told us that “we as a community must find a way to empower them through all walks of life.” Director Sinha celebrated Kaur as a “real changemaker, because she has really changed the hearts and minds of the next generation in a way that is so meaningful and will really impact the future.”

Gloria Steinem told the crowd to keep fighting for progress and for the Equal Rights Amendment, and lauded 10-year-old Teela Samra for her passionate speech calling for gender equality.

The night was a beautiful celebratory way to “show the world that we can win, and we can change lives, and we can make a difference in a time when the world is pretty dark.” Equality Now inspired its guests and its wins this year, and continues to make a difference worldwide. Exclusive: Scott Gimple and Norman Reedus clarifies when Melissa McBride joined The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon

by Julian Cannon October 14, 2023
written by Julian Cannon

Scott Gimple, the chief content officer of the popular television series “The Walking Dead,” recently clarified the timeline of Melissa McBride’s introduction to The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon. Amidst discussions during the press conference at New York Comic Con, Gimple shed light on when the talented actress, known for her role as Carol Peletier, joined the cast.

“We were always building to getting to a second season that included Melissa,” he said.

Scott Gimple’s perspective is also aligned with Norman Reedus. Both Gimple and Reedus share the view that Melissa McBride wanted to be on the spinoff. Rather than having her from the show’s inception, they aimed to ensure that Carol’s entry into the series was well-crafted and meaningful, aligning with the character’s evolution and the narrative’s progression.

“She was on board for the first day. And the media says this, social media says that, I literally told the truth. She’s been here since day one,” said Norman Reedus.

Scott Gimple also reflected on the unique aspects of The Walking Dead and its early seasons compared to the different storytelling on Daryl Dixon. He discussed the show’s origins, highlighting the presence of a core group of characters in its initial stages. Gimple emphasized the significance of focusing on Daryl Dixon’s character and experiences as a means to establish the foundation of the series. This approach allowed for the introduction of Carol Peletier at a later point in the storyline of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, contributing to the show’s dynamic character development.

“I think it allows for richer storytelling and it just doesn’t rely on two characters that you already know, because then there are less places to go. I think it allowed Daryl to grow. And, you know, the thing I love about having Norman and Melissa as executive producers is they’re involved in their characters’ storytelling,” said Gimple.

Fans at New York Comic Con got to see the season 1 finale of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon three days prior to it airing on television. This choice was based on a keen understanding of the character’s significance and the desire to reacquaint viewers with her character’s return in a compelling way. Gimple emphasized the importance of showcasing Carol’s return as a pivotal moment in the show’s narrative, underlining the impact it had on the live audience and the overall storytelling.

“We did want to keep quiet about some things so we thought it’d be awesome if the audience gets that surprise. I mean, from being in that room today and having seen it before and knowing what was coming, it’s just so exciting,” said Gimple.  “She has been one of my favorite characters since before I was working on the show.”

Jane Goodall: A Beacon of Hope for Our Planet

by William Murray October 4, 2023
written by William Murray

An extraordinary weekend filled with inspiration and hope unfolded as New Yorkers had the privilege of witnessing the legendary Jane Goodall in action. From the moment she took the stage at Kings Theatre to deliver her captivating presentation, “Reasons for Hope,” to the thought-provoking conversation at the renowned 92nd Street Y, Dr. Goodall’s enduring optimism for our planet illuminated the hearts and minds of all in attendance.

Dr. Goodall, a world-renowned primatologist, environmentalist, and UN Messenger of Peace, has dedicated her life to studying and protecting chimpanzees and advocating for conservation efforts. Her unwavering commitment to creating a better world for future generations is truly awe-inspiring.

During her presentation at Kings Theatre on Saturday September 30th, Dr. Goodall shared stories of resilience, highlighting the importance of individual action and collective responsibility in tackling the environmental challenges we face. Her words resonated deeply, reminding us that even small acts can have a profound impact.

What struck me most was Dr. Goodall’s emphasis on the power of the youth. She spoke just as passionately the following evening on Sunday October 1st at the 92nd Street Y, about the role young people play in shaping the future and encouraged them to become active agents of change. Her ability to instill hope in the hearts of the next generation was a testament to her belief that together, we can make a difference.

Leaving both events, one couldn’t help but feel grateful for having witnessed Dr. Goodall’s unwavering dedication and contagious spirit. She is undeniably a gift to our world—a beacon of hope shining brightly amidst the challenges we face. Her legacy serves as a reminder that each of us has the power to contribute to a more sustainable and compassionate future.

In a world that often seems marred by uncertainty, Jane Goodall’s extraordinary work and her enduring optimism remind us that the actions we take today can positively impact tomorrow.
