But during senior year, when a new teacher recognizes Jack’s gift for art and Frankie falls for a girl from the right side of the tracks, their futures are suddenly thrown in limbo. With only each other to lean on, they must shoulder the aspirations of their fathers and expectations of the town while struggling to discover what’s truly important and what makes them great.
The Knockturnal caught up with the film’s stars Nash Grier and Cameron Dallas at their Planet Hollywood appearance this week. Some fans had lined up as early as 4 a.m. to get a prime spot to see their social media heroes. When the guys arrived, their fans went crazy. Some were crying hysterically. There was memorabilia presentation in the restaurant’s main dining room and attendees were shown clips from the film. Read our interview below:
What was it like for you guys to see your fans today?
Cameron: It’s amazing. The fans are great. They’re pumped to see the movie, we’re excited for them to see the movie and I’m really just waiting on their feedback and they’re really the first batch of fans to see the movie, so it’s awesome.
How did you get involved?
Nash: One of the directors Michael Goldfine hit us up like ten months before the film was ever in production. It was just an idea.
Cameron: He brought us a loose script and interviewed us. It was a topic, we talked about it, we discussed.
Nash: But once we went through it, he came back to us with a finished script. I was like yeah we have to do this, this is the perfect first role, sports, girls, I love it, let’s do it, we’re going do it and we did it.
What was like making the transition into acting on screen?
Cameron: It was really fun. This is my second film that I’ve been in. Going from social media realm to I guess traditional movies is really fun. I’m always used to editing, acting, coming up with the idea, marketing it myself. And when you go into doing these movies you’re kind of taking the director’s vision and translating that on screen, and working with them and Eli and Michael, it was amazing.
Did you relate to your character in any ways?
Nash: In some ways. I didn’t want it to get confusing with my life and my character’s life. But there’s definitely a lot of ways that we relate to each other. But the biggest thing for me was trying to stay away from being Nash in videos because like you said when we used to make our videos we would pick our characters and play our characters or play ourselves and do everything. This is literally taking a vision and some words and just diving in and immersing yourself and getting lost in this person. That’s what we both tried to do. I tried to become Jack Sanders, so I didn’t even have to act, I could just go on set and react as Jack Sanders.
Cameron: You did, you did become Jack Sanders.
What was your favorite moment filming?
Cameron: My favorite moment from filming was probably going out in the field, the last couple of days we filmed actually on the field and we got to actually bat and we actually got to hit balls. On set there’s a lot of safety issues and stuff like that so we couldn’t really joke around or goof off a lot. But when they would let us knock some balls out the park it was really fun. I liked playing catch with Nash and Joey.
Is there anything you would like to add?
Nash: The first of probably many — hopefully many, that’s our plan, we want to really make a transfer and be storytellers and be entertainers because I think we’re really passionate about it and it’s just the perfect first step for me and second step for him.
Cameron: I want to continue acting obviously, then after this Nash has a big project coming up a documentary which is pretty sick. I’m proud of him. After this I’m gonna start focusing on touring and meeting some fans which I’m excited for, which I’m gonna be doing that on MadCon. I’m pumped.
