Forty years in the making, ‘Spaceballs: The New One‘, took the stage in the infamous Hall H this past weekend at San Diego Comic Con.
Picking up right where they left off, the team behind Spaceballs came in swinging by poking fun at Marvel, Star Wars, and even their own fans—the new trailer teasing ‘The 6,500 nerds who waited all day to see this,’ Jokes on jokes, the panel doesn’t miss a beat. The cast is brought out on stage, but someone appears to be missing. The only logical thing to do is to comb the crowd, and that’s exactly what happens.

Moderated by geek legend Kevin Smith, he asks “What gives you the balls to make this movie?” A combination of old faces and new, the Spaceballs team’s answers range from lighthearted jokes, to touching sentiments-Writer and producer Josh Gad mentioned that he got the ball rolling after having a dream about Spaceballs 2, and that he promptly called Mel Brooks the moment he woke up (“Josh…I don’t know half of what you’re talking about, but I really like it.”) Spaceballs made use of Hall H’s 180-degree wrap-around screens, displaying a mock-up of the upcoming eleven phases of the Spaceballs IP (A lighthearted jab at the Marvel Cinematic Universe,) before displaying several videos of the absent Mel Brooks thanking the fans in attendance for their continued love and support.

After hearing from the sequel’s absolutely stacked cast, including new recruits Keke Palmer and Lewis Pullman, the panel wound down with an advanced look at the upcoming official trailer. With Mel Brooks reprising the character of Yogurt, and Daphne Zuniga returning as the now Queen Vespa, it hardly feels like any time has passed at all.
Spaceballs: The New One arrives in theaters on April 23, 2027.
