On Tuesday, July 11th, we took backstage with Death to Tennis to check out grooming looks for New York Fashion Week: Men’s.

Designers Vincent Oshin and William Watson had a very clear vision for their Spring 2018 presentation and the grooming looks for the evening were no exception. Inspired by legends from the likes of Elvis to Johnny Cash, the hair looks were truly the finishing touches to the classic statement pieces that made up the Death to Tennis Spring 2018 collection.

We checked in with lead AXE hair stylist John Rudiant to get fully caught up on how these grooming looks were achieved. Overall, there were two main hair looks, the pompadour and ‘the roll.’ Here’s what Rudiant had to say about them both.

Look 1: The Pompadour

“For the pompadour, we blow-dried the hair with some salt spray to give it some grip so it would hold. And then to get even more hold, we went with AXE’s ‘Spiked-Up Look’ Extreme Hold Gel – really lifting it up to get the volume. And then, after we blow-dried the gel in, we went in and started sculpting the hair to the desired height. To get the slicked-greaser look, we used the ‘Clean Cut Look’ Classic Pomade. To finish off, we used a bit of hair spray.”

Look 2: ‘The Roll’

“For the rolls, we blow-dried the same products into the hair. Then, we took a central section from the forehead to the center of the nape [a central part]. From there – starting in the nape – we twisted the hair like you would a French twist, folding into the center of the part, and then working our way up from the nape to the top of the head, pinning it with hair pins and bobby pins. Then, do the other side.

With the leftover triangle section, we brushed everything down and – depending on the length – we either curled it with our finger or we used a 1” ¼ curling iron. Lastly, we rolled the leftover piece up and fanned out the roll to even out on the sides. We finished it off with the pomade to get that greaser look and a little bit of hairspray to manage the fly-aways.”

Overall, both looks made a statement and undoubtedly emphasized the cool, carefree vibe of the contemporary menswear brand that is Death to Tennis. To see the full hair looks from their Spring 2018 presentation, check out their Instagram.
