Hathaway leads the A24 film as an iconic pop star desperately seeking out her estranged best friend and former costume designer, on the eve of her comeback performance.
Mother Mary, written and directed by David Lowery, stars Anne Hathaway as iconic pop star Mother Mary reuniting with her estranged best friend and former costume designer Sam Anselm (Michaela Coel).
Backed by a stacked cast of Hunter Schafer, FKA Twigs, Atheena Frizzell, Kaia Gerber, Jessica Brown Findlay, Isaura Barbé-Brown, Alba Baptista and Sian Clifford, the project is brimming with talent.

What’s being described as “modern pop star meets gothic melodrama”, the dark themes and electropop that make Mother Mary what it is is largely thanks to Charli XCX, Jack Antonoff, and collaboration from FKA twigs, shaping the soundscape of the entire film.

As the release of Hathaway’s other project The Devil Wears Prada 2 looms nearer, she speaks of Mother Mary as being her toughest role yet.
The star says one of the main things that gave her the courage and confidence to take on this kind of role was her choreographer Dani Vitale: “She was so nurturing and she always accepted whatever it was that I offered. She always made me feel like I should be proud of myself for even trying. It took years to come together and I tried to use (the time) the best I could.”

Starring alongside Michaela Coel pushed her role even further. Coel described learning the script upon one of the first meetings with director David Lowery as necessary, saying “The words are beautiful. I wanted to give him, during that read-through, the full idea of what it sounds like. I can’t be doing that while reading off of a page.”
Mother Mary is in theaters this April 17.
