How Music Tectonics is Shaping the Future of Music Tech

by Staff November 5, 2023
written by Staff

Last week, I had the opportunity to attend the Music Tectonics Conference 2023 in Santa Monica, CA. It was an amazing event that brought together music tech innovators from across the industry spectrum. I learned a lot, met some great people, and had a lot of fun. Here is my experience.

You can’t talk about the conference without mentioning the amazing panels and networking. The conference kicked off with a really interesting talk by Maria Egan, David Knox, and Vickie Nauman about gaming and music. They shared some insights into where the industry is going. They also talked about some of the challenges and opportunities that the industry faces in the age of Web3, such as data ownership, transparency, and decentralization.

The conference also featured several panels that covered a variety of topics, such as:

– Untapped Opportunities in the Music Market: This panel discussed how the streaming boom has created a surge in demand for music catalogs, and how artists, labels, publishers, and investors can benefit from this trend.

– The Billion $ Problem: Emerging Solutions to the Music Industry’s Streaming Fraud Conundrum: This panel explored how music tech platforms are fighting fraud and making sure artists get their fair share of the pie.

– And many other amazing conversations.

The Exhibitors and Activations

The conference also had a lot of exhibitors around the pool at the Annenberg Beach House. They showcased some of the latest and coolest music tech products and services. I got to see demos, try out some gadgets, and chat with the founders and reps.

Some of the exhibitors that caught my eye were:

– LANDR: LANDR is an online platform that provides AI-powered mastering, distribution, collaboration, and promotion tools for musicians.

– LyricFind: LyricFind is a global leader in licensed lyrics solutions, powering thousands of websites and services with lyrics from over 4,000 publishers. I learned how lyrics can enhance the music discovery and consumption experience, and how they can generate revenue for rights holders.

– getmoments.com: an app that helps you get more out of concerts.

Next, I had the opportunity to speak to the founder of the conference Dmitri.

Dmitri started the Music Tectonics Conference in 2019 as an in-person event in LA. He noticed that there was nothing going on in the LA area for music tech, and he wanted to do something on the west coast this time of year. He chose LA as the spot because he felt that music is crossing over to more and more verticals, such as gaming, Hollywood, streaming, social media, and more.

He also wanted to create an ecosystem play, where music tech innovators can connect with the whole industry, including record labels, publishers, investors, management companies, consultants, attorneys, and more. He believes that startups need to be part of the conversations and partnerships that will shape the future of music.

The Current and Future Trends in Music Tech

Dmitri shared with me his observations on what’s happening right now in music tech, and what’s coming next. He said that there are two big things that are happening right now: artificial intelligence and Web3.

Artificial intelligence is making the tools of production more and more accessible to anyone who wants to create music. He said that it’s not about replacing human creativity, but rather enhancing it and democratizing it. He gave examples of some of the AI-powered platforms and tools that were showcased at the conference, such as LANDR, which provides online mastering, distribution, collaboration, and promotion services for musicians.

Web3 is transforming the music rights landscape with technologies such as blockchain, smart contracts, and NFTs. He said that it offers new possibilities for data ownership, transparency, and decentralization for both artists and fans. He gave examples of some of the Web3 disruptors that were featured at the conference, such as Vibrate, which tracks and analyzes live music events around the world using big data and machine learning.

He also said that live music tech is another area that is evolving rapidly with technologies such as VR/AR, spatial audio, interactive lighting, and more. He said that it can enhance the live music experience for both artists and fans, especially in times of COVID-19 restrictions. He gave examples of some of the live music tech tools that were presented at the conference, such as getmoments.com, which is a social app that helps you find and connect with like-minded people who share your interests.

The Advice for Music Tech Startups

Dmitri also shared with me his advice for music tech startups who want to succeed in this industry. He said that they need to be committed to their passion for music and technology because it’s always going to be a hard road. He said that music has a smaller total addressable market than other industries, such as gaming or fintech or health tech or cyber security. He said that music tech startups need to find their niche and their value proposition in this competitive space.

He also said that music tech startups need to be part of a community where they can get support, information, feedback, and exposure. He said that Music Tectonics is one of those communities, as well as a platform where music tech founders can meet and network with other innovators from across the industry spectrum, and showcase their products and services to potential partners and investors.

The Networking and Connections

One of the best things about the conference was the networking opportunities. I got to meet and connect with so many amazing people who work in music tech. I exchanged ideas, insights, feedback, contacts, and business cards with them. I also made some new friends who share my passion for music and technology.

Meeting X LI the legendary web 3 artist and co-founder of Soundctrl.XYZ, startup founders, CEOs, musicians, creatives. The relationships that I made here are priceless. I walked away very impressed with the people here.

The Conclusion

The Music Tectonics Conference 2023 was an incredible event that exceeded my expectations. I learned a lot, met a lot of great people, and had a lot of fun. I want to thank Dmitri Vietze for his time and insights, and for organizing such a wonderful conference. I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in music tech. I can’t wait for the next one!

A Mexican Courtyard Style Restaurant Opens Its Doors in Williamsburg

by Branda Ayo November 4, 2023
written by Branda Ayo

A Mexican-inspired Courtyard opened its doors to Brooklynites in Williamsburg earlier last month, inviting them to enjoy Mexican gastronomy and culture as they experience the menu for the first time. The popular food district has long been an epicenter for culinary innovation, drawing the attention of food enthusiasts from far and wide. By offering contemporary  interpretations of classic Mexican dishes, Mexi navigates the delicate balance between preserving tradition and embracing innovation.

In an ever-evolving culinary landscape, Mexi distinguishes itself through a commitment to authentic flavors, cultural immersion, and a holistic dining experience. The echoes of Mexico resound not only through the delicious dishes but also through every aspect of Mexi’s decor. Traditional tiles, hand-painted artworks by local artists, and Mexican symbolism create an environment that transports diners to the heart of Mexico. The restaurant breathes life into century-old church pews, reclaimed beams, and custom doors, which stand as artifacts of history, now repurposed for the enjoyment of patrons. Large oil paintings adorning the walls capture the essence of Mexican landscapes, agave plants, and traditional Folklorico Dance Dresses, creating a sensory journey through the country’s diverse regions. Every detail, from the Zapotec Queen-sized rug to artisan hand-painted tiles, adds texture and authenticity to the space, ensuring that Mexi remains a masterpiece in culinary immersion.

Mexi Food

The Mexi team drew inspiration from their Mexican heritage to create a menu that pays homage to the country’s rich culinary traditions. Spearheading these efforts is Chef Zenaido Hernandez, an experienced talent from the restaurant group, with the consultation of Michelin chef Johan Svensson from Aquavit. At Mexi, everything is made from scratch, from corn tortillas to mole sauces and hand-rolled corn masa dumplings, often referred to as ‘gnocchi,’ showcasing a commitment to authenticity and quality.

  • Fire-roasted tomatillo & jalapeño salsa verde ($14):  Mexi’s salsa verde offers a flavorful and mild option that’s perfect for dipping chips. The tangy notes and smoky heat in the red salsa add depth and variety to the experience.
  • Tuna Serrano Aguachile($19): While not everyone may be a ceviche enthusiast, Mexi’s take on the Tuna Serrano Aguachile is a culinary adventure. The combination of fresh tuna marinated in a cucumber-lime broth, mixed with herbs and vegetables, results in a refreshing and delightful dish. It’s a must-try for seafood lovers.
  • Short Rib Birria Tacos ($24): These open-faced tacos feature juicy short ribs, served with their own consommé sauce, offering a deeply satisfying and richly flavored option.
  • Pork Shoulder Al Pastor ($26): An embodiment of Mexican street food, these taco skewers feature guajillo pepper-marinated pork shoulder, served in a grilled pineapple. Guests have the opportunity to create their perfect bite with complementing salsa matcha, salsa roja, and house-made tortillas.
  • Popover Churros:  For dessert, The Popover Churros, reminiscent of traditional churros, are served with dulce de leche and Mexican Chili chocolate sauces. A sweet and indulgent finish to Mexi’s menu.

Mexi Cocktails

Curated by Ramon Morado and Carlos Becerra, Mexi’s cocktail menu is a celebration of Mexican spirits, showcasing rare small-batch tequilas and Mexican rums. These ingredients serve as the foundation Mexi’s cocktails that draw inspiration from Mexico’s history and heritage.

  • Mexi in the City: A Mexican-inspired take on the Cosmopolitan, with colors reminiscent of the vibrant streets of Mexico.
  • El Concord: A mix of Margarita and a wine float, symbolizing the historical period when Mexico was occupied by Spain.
  • Maria Felix: Inspired by Mexican Actress and singer Maria Felix, known for receiving roses after her performances, this cocktail captures her essence with its pink and red hues.
  • Sergio Leon: Drawing inspiration from the agave landscapes in Mexico, Sergio Leon incorporates green to represent the agave plant itself, accompanied by foam as part of the fermentation process.

Mexi is located at 149 North 9th Street and is open daily from 4 to 11 p.m., with reservations available through Resy.

Hallmark decks the halls with Cher and Norah Jones

by Justin Rodriguez November 4, 2023
written by Justin Rodriguez

For some folks the fall months is race to your local Party City for a last minute spooktastic costume or a chance to take a trip to your corner Starbuck for a signature pumpkin spice latte instagram post. However for a select few who believe in merry and bright it marks the beginning to Hallmarks Countdown to Christmas Spectacular. The mecca of holiday cheer begins celebrating the the fall season with “Christmas at Castle Hart” starring Hallmark channel favorite and Mean Girls star Lacey Chabert. The film is one many festive films adding themselves the legacy of channel.

Founded in 2001, Hallmark has become a staple for hit holiday movies including “Christmas Under Wraps”, “A Royal Christmas” and “The Holiday Sitter”. The media giant celebrated its anticipated christmas movies series launch with soiree worthy of Santa’s nice list. Both big wigs and big fans of Hallamrk gatherted at New York City’s high hot stop The Peak. The night was packed full of delicious cuisines supplied by the 5 star restaurant and sparkling signature cocktails that left me feeling like I received the best present this holiday season.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CylcjyKrlZX/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_campaign=loading

Speaking of presents, the holiday mecca gave us a sweet gift in form of music with a surprise performance by multi grammy winner Norah Jones. The iconic songstress delivered a pitch perfect performance of hit songs like “Come Away With Me” and new holiday renditions of fan favorites like “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”. Adding the perfect ribbon to a spectacular night was Hallmark announcing that joining Norah Jones in the movie music world is superstar and living legend Cher, a piece of information that I wish I could hear over and over again, truly if I could turn back time.

Standing on top of the world in the middle of some of our favortite Hallmark movie props felt like a Christmas dream. The night ended with cheerful treats and a signature ornimanet that I can’t wait to place on my Christmas while watching my favorite Hallmark channel premiere movie.

Restaurant Review: Kintsugi Omakase NYC

by Megan D'Souza November 3, 2023
written by Megan D'Souza

Kintsugi Omakase NYC, a sleek chef’s counter-style sushi “atelier” in lower Soho, recently upped their game by bringing on Chef Victor of Sushi Ko. To find out what the buzz was about, we stopped by this week to sample their new menu, which changes with the seasons for the freshest ingredients.

Chef Victor follows the traditional edomae (referencing the style originating from Edo Bay) style of sushi-making, but puts a modern twist on his art. He uses non-traditional, non-Japanese ingredients to flavor some of his dishes, and his close relationship with NYC fishmongers allows him to source the freshest, finest seafood available. The difference is palpable – one bite of Kintsugi’s Hokkaido Ikura (salmon roe) or uni and it’s clear how high-quality the ingredients are.

In addition to technique and ingredient excellence, Kintsugi Omakase stands out by its use of seasonal ingredients. Typical of new Nordic or farm-to-table style restaurants, Kintsugi brings flavors of the month to sushi, where most establishments would stick to the tried-and-true traditions. Since it’s autumn, our dishes featured a green apple puree paired with a smoked Sawara and apple cider, baby corn with crispy fried fish, and other winter seafood delicacies.

When I asked Chef Victor what his favorite season of ingredients was, he told us “fall and winter, because they have the weirdest items.” Weird as they may be, he prepared them to perfection – half the dishes were items I’d never heard of, and I’m a sushi aficionado. Host Ko told us they aim to “take your palate on an adventure you’ve never been on before.” This delectable adventure featured a codfish sperm sac (winter only), crispy fried Amadai (tilefish) with its scales (dubbed by Chef Victor as natural fish and chips), a pickled fish similar to the herring popular in northern Europe, and barracuda.

.

In addition to the sushi tasting, each menu option includes a handroll, the best miso soup you’ve ever tried, bruleed tamago, and a dessert (the current one is black sesame and ginger ice cream – a scoop of each). Finishing off the meal with these comforting plates was the perfect way to wind down from the experiential tasting. We also highly recommend the restaurant’s singular cocktail: a yuzu and violet syrup enhanced sake. I’d come back for this item alone; clearly the team at Kintsugi has the expertise to open a successful bar, if they wanted!

Dining at Kinstugi Omakase NYC is an experience that can’t be missed if you’re a foodie in this city. Their 10-person dining room, carefully designed by creative partners Ashe Yeung and Tim Madrid, feels intimate and sophisticated. But definitely not stuffy – Chef Victor’s lighthearted jokes and sarcastic commentary make you instantly comfortable with him, and we enjoyed hearing his descriptions of his craft while watching him expertly assemble each mouthwatering bite. We can’t wait to come back. Book your reservation at Kintsugi here ASAP!
