NYFW 2024: Baby, The Stars Shine Bright

On February 11th, the Global Fashion Collective featured designs from Baby, The Stars Shine Bright, a Japanese clothing brand created by Akinori Isobe and Fumiyo in 1988. 

Baby, The Stars Shine Bright was one of the early purveyors of Loilta fashion, a style popular in Japan that draws inspiration from the Victorian and Rococo era. It’s important to note that the Western connotation of “Lolita” is quite different from Lolita in the context of Lolita fashion. In the years since Vladmir Nabokov’s controversial novel Lolita was published in 1955, the term Lolita has developed an increasingly negative connotation in the Western world due to the novel and subsequent film adaptations’ strong associations with pedophilia, sexual abuse, grooming, and rape. However, the term “Lolita” in Japan is more closely associated with youth, femininity, and innocence rather than sexual attractiveness. Some Lolitas in Japan view the youth of Lolita fashion as an expression of protest against the responsibilities of traditional gender roles.

This collection was inspired by Usakumya-chan, the brand’s teddy bear mascot. Each dress was incredibly intricately detailed, and featured voluptuous, structured skirts. Most dresses were mini dresses and paired with thigh high socks in striped or whimsical matching patterns

Many featured layers of lace ruffles that evoked the idea of an intricately piped cake.

The callback to Alice in Wonderland, a very common Lolita inspiration, was very clear in multiple signature pastel blue dresses. Several dresses also appeared to draw inspiration from the Queen of hearts, featuring deep red hues and heart embellishments framed in lace. 

The overall runway also evoked a bridal motif, adorned with chiffon, pastel roses, and flower petals. Some of the dresses were all white and constructed with variations of silk and lace, but overall evoked more of flower girl than bride due to the A-Line and babydoll silhouettes.

Usakumya-chan also featured prominently, as many models walked the runway holding the fluffy white bear-in-rabbit-ears. Some dresses were paired with rabbit ear accessories, bonnets, or crowns.

 

Baby, The Stars Shine Bright’s NYFW showcase also attracted dedicated Lolitas, as many attendees wore outfits inspired by the brand. The show was a fascinating look at Lolita fashion and offered a rare insight into the brand’s trajectory and influence in Japan.

NYFW Global Fashion Collective Day 1

On February 9, the Global Fashion Collective showcased four diverse designers that brightened the stark white walls of the Chelsea Industrial. 

The show started with Lenifro, a Spanish brand created by Helen Lopez. The showcase featured the new ‘Retro Dreamer’ line, inspired by Helen’s son, Dream, and the 80’s era. The entire collection was created from recycled water bottles. Many pieces featured bright neon colors and bold prints. Lenifro also featured a mix of baggy silhouettes with shorter skirts and prominently structured shoulders.

One of the standout pieces was an ankle length black and white checked coat, with a dispersed bold red and blue pattern.

The next designs were from ‘Eternal Threads’, a collection from Rea by Rhea, created by Rhea Singh. Rhea has lived in Poland, India, Singapore, and the United States and strives to preserve the rich history of textiles in India through her designs. She draws inspiration from old Indian and Mughal architecture, and her color schemes are inspired by ancient Indian art. Her designs simultaneously push the boundary of modernity. Many pieces featured pointed, heavily structured, armor-inspired sleeve structures. The contrast between sharp edges and flowy skirts was pleasantly balanced and intriguing, and showcased how dynamic Rhea is as a designer.

Wirt Li’s first collection for Studio L7 came next. This monochromatic collection featured menswear inspired pieces with bold necklines and color blocking. The pieces daringly redefined the concept of a suit and incorporated traditionally feminine ruffles and skirts.

The final designer, R-Infection, showcased ‘The Land Resound’, a collection inspired by elements of the natural world. All of the pieces featured relaxed and approachable casual silhouettes. The color palettes of shades of brown earth tones and blue and green jewel tones evoked the calmness and familiarity of trees, roots, and branches.

This show presented by Global Fashion Collective was a feast for the eyes and shed much deserved light on four vastly diverse and scintillating up and coming designers.

On The Scene: Badgley Mischka Unveils Fall 2024 Collection and New Fragrances

When Mark Badgley and James Mischka started their now world-renowned fashion brand in 1988, they began with twelve black dresses and one red one. “We love adornment and fantasy,” they said. “But we are realists and modernists at heart. One hand holds a wool crepe, the other throws crystal beads.”

Badgley Mischka has been channeling this for decades, with elements of fantasy incorporated into real world designs for the constantly evolving modern fashion scene. They have grown with the times while always carrying a timeless charm within their striking designs. On Saturday, they unveiled their highly anticipated Fall 2024 collection, which combines the dueling conceits of the aforementioned wool crepe and crystal beads, a testament to the evolving fashion world. Notable attendees of the vivacious show included Alexis Floyd, Adrienne Bailon-Houghton, Eva Marcille, Caylee Cowan, Iskra Lawrence, Gigi Gorgeous, Grace Duah, Jonathan Cheban, Elizabeth Woods, Kelly Rutherford and more.

The collection channels the precision and drama of Park Avenue glass towers and the velvet-lined floral cocoons in their lobbies. “It is a dance we love to do,” they said. “Of control and extravagance.” It pays homage to the timeless elegance of the New York City socialites depicted in Ryan Murphy’s Feud: Capote vs. the Swans. Inspired by the glamorous evening attire of the upper echelon from that era, the design duo sought to infuse retro glamor with a contemporary edge.

This season’s collection features a variety of suits, cocktail dresses and gowns, mainly in a muted color palette accentuated by metallics, blacks, and jewel tones. The show was presented in a color coordinated fashion, adding emphasis to the stunning details of each look. The emphasis was on bold yet simple silhouettes, reminiscent of refined elegance. While some pieces exuded a modern allure, others lean heavily into nostalgic references.

Badgley Mischka shows are an experience from start to finish, even before they begin. Each attendee was met with a gift on their seat, a sleek white pouch containing the latest installment in the Badgley Mischka world, fragrances from their Voyage Collection. The collection is a testament to their 35-year journey in the world of fashion and fragrance, a culmination of their globetrotting adventures,

which capture the essence of their travels and experiences. The launch of the two fragrances, Cap D’Antibes and Château Vizcaya, is not just a fragrance release; it’s a celebration of their enduring passion for beauty and style, marking a significant milestone in their illustrious career. 

“The first stop on our voyage collection had to be Cap D’Antibes – It embodies a perfect day on the Côte D’Azur,” Badgley and Mischka said. “Here, Mediterranean citrus, white peach, and fig mingle with jasmine for an initial embrace; musk crystals and amber woods gracefully guide us into the golden hours.”

 

The sublime Cap D’Antibes fragrance emanates irresistible allure. Wisps of breezy Mediterranean citrus and white peach drift atop fig and jasmine, underpinned by amber woods and musk crystals. The sublime sophistication of the Côte d’Azur energizes with peaceful depths.  Floral and oceanic, the delicious Vizcaya fragrance delights with the mystery of a secluded garden. Lush tropical florals blossom among salt breeze atop sandalwood and coconut musk. Escape to paradise with its vibrant warmth infused with seductive beauty. The intricate illustrations on the outer packaging invite you on a voyage, from the fluttering leaves to the tranquil coastal scenes, echoing the enchantment of the Riviera and the history of its beautiful capes. Crowning the bottle is a cap that is evocative of rich, resplendent amber. Amber, treasured through the ages for its natural beauty and mystical properties, mirrors the timelessness and allure that Badgley Mischka imbues in each of its creations.

 

As for Château Vizcaya, everything about it, including its color, is reminiscent of a setting sun. Floral and oceanic, the delicious Vizcaya fragrance delights with the mystery of a secluded garden. NYFW Hosted A 5 Day Pop Up for Fashion Lovers

To celebrate the start of a new fashion week in New York,  NYFW Backstage launched its 5-day pop-up for fashion enthusiasts. The multi-day event ran from Friday, February 9 – Tuesday, February 13 at 21 Greene Street with tickets available to the public and doors opening at 11 am daily. 

At the helm of this immersive experience is Creative Director Ethan Tobman, whose artistic vision has illuminated stages around the world, including Taylor Swift’s iconic Eras Tour. With Tobman’s guidance, NYFW Backstage became more than just a showcase of fashion; but rather a canvas for storytelling. Guest had the opportunity to hear from top designers like 3.1 Phillip Lim, Eckhaus Latta, Jason Wu, and Sergio Hudson as they shared insights into their collections and creative processes. 

 

Some of the immersive activations included:

TRESemmé Style Studios

TRESemme’s expert stylists pampered guests at the DIY station with free touch-ups and styling appointments

Front Row Livestreams

This activation allowed guests to witness the excitement of designer shows live on a big screen. They got to see the latest trends and designs fresh from the runway.

IMG Models Photo Studio

IMG Models Photo Studio offered a chance for guests to have professional photos taken and leave with three images to kickstart their modeling portfolios.

The Anatomy of a Look

The Anatomy of a Look provided insights into the creative process behind runway-ready outfits. Guests explored sketches, fabric swatches, and more, gaining a deeper understanding of how fashion comes to life on the catwalk.

Trippie Redd and Ksubi’s New Collection Passed The Vibe Check

Last week, Ohio native Trippie Redd and streetwear brand Ksubi kicked off New York Fashion Week at Manhattan’s Georgia Room for an exclusive preview of their highly anticipated collaboration. The 21-piece collection was modeled by fashion influencers including Giovanna Ramos, Cjay Syre, Dimitry Dino,  Elyanna Banes Sanchez, and others. Sugarhill Dot, Lola Brooke, Danzel Dion, Caylee Cowan, Michael Rainey Jr, and others were also spotted at the event.

Trippie Redd, born Michael Lamar White IV, has emerged as a formidable force in the music industry with his unique blend of melodic rap, emo influences, and energetic performances. Rising to prominence in the mid-2010s, he captivated audiences with his distinctive vocal style and boundary-pushing creativity.

As a multi-talented artist, Trippie Redd’s influence extends beyond music. He’s become known for his bold fashion choices and vibrant personality, earning him a significant following among fans of both hip-hop and contemporary culture. This fusion of music and distinctive style made the collaboration with Ksubi such a great idea. The fashion reflected Trippie Redd’s core fanbase embodying a rebellious spirit & breaking away from mainstream fashion norms.

CEO Craig King admired Trippie’s imagination, stating, “Very few artists possess the creativity and imagination of Trippie Redd. It was a great privilege for Ksubi to collaborate with him to create this unique collection for his fans and ours.”

Reflecting on the partnership, Trippie Redd emphasized the importance of self-expression, stating, “When it comes to both music and fashion, I never like to be put in a box. I express myself fully without any boundaries, which is why it made sense to link up with Ksubi. I wanted the collection to feel authentically me, and I’m excited to bring new designs to Ksubi that aren’t typically what they’ve done before and to bring that vision to life.”

The Ksubi x Trippie Redd collection, set to launch this March, will be available at Ksubi.com, Ksubi stores in major cities, and select retailer partners worldwide.

New York Men’s Day Showcase

It’s that time of the year again: New York Fashion Week is here. Agentry PR kicked off the week with the New York Men’s Day (NYMD) Showcase, presented by Hilldun. The bi-annual fashion collective initiative is intended to nurture emerging talents in the fashion world.  The showcase consisted of four designers: The Salting, Tarpley, Bulan, and the debut designer Pas Une Marque. Attendees could sip Topo Chicos while strolling through Location05 exploring the various designers of the evening. 

The Salting, true to its name, presented a very nautical inspired collection. The creative directors, Michael Ward and Manel Garcia Espejo, served pinstripe blazers accented with brown rope tied in complicated sailor knots. Their silhouettes redefine the traditional male workwear to create raw, unisex looks. The showcase was accompanied by the iconic Stretch Armstrong spinning some sweet vinyl. 

Designer Tarpley Brooks Jones, of Tarpley, displayed his newest collection: “Anon-Maybe You See Me, Maybe You Don’t.” The minimalist futuristic looks act as a critique of the dynamics of visibility and invisibility in the digital age. Models were adorned with massive, speed racer sunglasses and boxy silhouettes that obscured their faces and bodies. 

Bulan showcased their fall 2024 collection: “Garbage Collector.” Designed and directed by Beam Ratchapol Ngaongam, the collection explores the life and relationship of Ngaongam’s mother who was a garbage collector growing up in Thailand. The collection consists of whimsical, colorful knit pieces draped over the models as they stand on cardboard boxes and empty soda cans. 

The French luxury brand Pas Une Marque, in partnership with Johnson Tsang, presented their new collection, “Seams of Dissent.” The playful designs challenge societal norms while simultaneously balancing art and elegance. This unique blend could easily be seen on the streets of New York.
