Last Tuesday Warner Brothers held a red carpet for the premiere of ‘SWEETWATER’ outside the Steven J. Ross Theater on the Warner Brothers’ Lot.
In attendance was Richard Dreyfuss, Jeremy Piven, and of course Everett Osborne, who plays the titular character, “Nat ‘Sweetwater’ Clifton.” Director Martin Guigui was also in attendance, as well as Jude Thomas (who plays the character ‘Marques’).
The film centers around Nathaniel “Sweetwater” Clifton, star attraction of the Harlem Globetrotters, changes the game of basketball when he becomes the first African American player to sign a contract with the NBA in the fall of 1950. Jeremy Piven plays Joe Lapchick, the coach of the New York Knickerbockers, who takes the initiative to integrate the team alongside NBA President Maurice Podoloff (played by Richard Dreyfuss) and Ned Irish (played by Cary Elwes).
Over ten years in the making, the film finally premiered at the Steven J. Ross Theater with a very impressive attendance and reception. Before the premiere, we got to speak to some of the cast of the film, to see what their experience was on and off set. While many of the actors were veterans to the red carpet, this was Everett Osborne’s first
Everett explained how he was approached with the project like any other actor, and surprisingly didn’t know much about Sweetwater. Learning about the legend made him want to accept the challenge and give it his all in front of the camera just like Sweetwater did on the court. We also had the pleasure of speaking with Jeremy Piven, who talked a little bit about how he grew up watching the game and taking this role helped bring back the love for it.
