7 Days + 300 Artists + 20 Concerts + School Programs = HONK NYC!
HONK NYC! is a spin off of the Boston area HONK! Festival of Activist Street Bands. This independent arts festival celebrates contemporary street bands, theatrics, and the culture that comes with it. Starting in 2008, HONK! Fest has come a long way from playing in the basement of some club. The now multi-city fest has a network of HONK!S spanning through U.S., Brazil, and Australia.
There are bands coming from as far as New Orleans to Paris, in order to make their NYC debuts. From Paris we’ve got the funky Les Vilains Chicots. and from New Orleans we’ve got all ten members of the New Creations Brass Band and the living legend himself, Big Chief Alfred Doucette along with his eclectic hand-stitched Mardi Gras Indian costumes. Let’s not forget about our own local heroes which include Brooklyn United Marching Band, subway superstars Drumadics, and new alternative band Funkrust Brass Band.
HONK NYC! is now a week long celebration (October 12 – 18) with nearly 25 performance groups. From outdoor concerts and late-night parades to school visits. This event presents free and affordable performances in public spaces across New York City!
