San Francisco producer Go Yama put out a new track this week titled “Neko Atsume and Chill.”
If you have never heard of this game before, Neko Atsume: Kitty Collector is a game that was released by Hit-Point for iOS and Android in October 2014. The game is simple—you place food and playthings like toys and cushions in your yard and wait for the neighborhood cats to visit. The cats come and go as they please and leave you little gifts of fish, which you use to purchase more toys and food for your cats. When the cats visit, you can take photographs of them and collect them in your “Catbook,” or a virtual photo album. There are also rare cats to unlock that only visit when certain toys are in your yard.
As simple and repetitive as this game sounds, I’ve developed a strange obsession with Neko Atsume for the last two months (I will also admit that I unhesitatingly spent real money on this game for a yard expansion and candy-themed remodeling.) Naturally, I was very intrigued when a friend of mine sent me a song titled “Neko Atsume and Chill” and said that I would really feel this beat. I did.
Scooter Oyama, known under the artist name Go Yama, sampled the game’s familiar background music, meows, and other sound effects within the game to produce a futuristic hip-hop beat—reminiscent of Cashmere Cat or DJ Mustard’s style of production. There’s definitely a lot of emphasis on percussion and bass, but with its cute melody and meows here and there, there is a good balance of dope and kawaii on this beat.
