Former Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is known for paving the way for equality, both socially and politically, despite all odds being stacked against her. Directed by Academy Award-winner Freida Lee Mock, RUTH – JUSTICE GINSBURG IN HER OWN WORDS, is an exploration of the political icon’s most soulful moments and a deep dive into her spirit.
Mock approaches this topic not only from an obvious political level, but also dramatizes numerous parts of the whole-personal, psychological, and social that impacted the course of her work and life. Designed as an immersive experience through the direct words and addresses of RBG as a professor, advocate, Judge, and Justice, the use of evocative and intimate animation to visualize the complexity of the constitutional cases she took on and to the experience and immerse the viewer. Furthermore, the insights of colleagues who have directly worked with or have been impacted by her forty years as an icon in the legal field make this project far more personal and tangible for the individual.
Director, Writer, and Producer, Freida Lee Mock, could not have described her creative process better:
‘“I was struck by Justice Ginsburg’s special interest in meeting with student groups […] who asked impressively, well–prepared questions. One 10-year-old [asked]: “Of the six women’s rights cases that you argued before the Supreme Court, which do you think has made the biggest change?” or [a] 5th-grade boy: “Is it hard to become a Supreme Court justice because you were a woman?” As a filmmaker, I was looking for a way to tell Justice Ginsburg’s story that would be riveting, moving, and surprising. In one of Justice Ginsburg’s answers to the students, I found what could be the dramatic core of the film RUTH. In her direct, engaging way Justice Ginsburg said to the school children: “I had three strikes against me – I was Jewish, a woman, and a mother of a four-year-old.” This became the animating theme of the film and a way to unfold her story: How does a woman with three strikes against her rise to the highest court in the land, the U.S. Supreme Court? What did she draw on to overcome obstacles?’
