Five Reasons ‘The Marvels’ Needs Your Attention Now

With the release of The Marvels, the MCU’s next major film, many have been wondering if this one is as good as previous films, if it is essential to understanding Phase 4, and if it should be watched now or later on Disney+. These questions always arise with every new Marvel release, but I can say with enthusiasm that audiences must understand how great The Marvels is as a film, and how it should not be skipped at all this season.

Below are five reasons you should watch The Marvels as soon as possible, or you’re missing out.

The Marvels features the return of fan-favorite characters and actors

One of the first noticeable draws to watching a major blockbuster film like The Marvels is its use of a stellar cast, some of which are favorites among Marvel fans. Fans have been clamoring for a return for Iman Vellani, and the character she plays, Ms. Marvel, from her hit Disney+ show of the same name. This is the first time we see her working alongside her idol, Captain Marvel, played by Brie Larson, who we have not seen since Avengers: Endgame, all the way in 2019. Also returning are Teyonah Parris, playing Monica Rambeau, and Samuel L. Jackson, playing his iconic role as Nick Fury. Fans of any of these characters will definitely be pleased, as they are further fleshed out and given new situations they must deal with.

The Marvels makes use of astounding CGI

The film also features amazing action and setpieces that is at times beautiful and a sight to behold. The lush alien landscapes and cosmic battles depicted are crisp, colorful, and grandiose, while still maintaining a level of realism that makes everything look believable. A highlight is the new mechanic that the three titular characters must face, which is that their locations in space are exchanged every time they use their powers. This creates some intense fight scenes that involve them constantly switching places and resulting in frantic, interesting combat that is a pleasure to watch.

The Marvels tells a compelling and heartfelt story

While there certainly are entertaining visual elements to the film, it should also be noted that the story is particularly intriguing and downright emotional at times. In the film, Captain Marvel struggles with the repercussions of her actions, as she has attempted to use her powers for good, but in doing so, she inadvertently deprived a planet of critical resources. In this film, she must face the consequences of her decisions, and how this affects her relationship with those that look up to her. There were several moments that were almost tear inducing, and those that enjoy a layered and complex plot will find plenty to love here.

The Marvels is funny as hell

I’ll say it: this movie is absolutely hilarious. For all its deeper and slower moments, it has situations that are side-splittingly funny. The movie seamlessly transitions between serious and comical moments, and one of its strong suits is being able to do so in a way that feels natural and not forced, even with high stakes.

A particular moment that comes to mind is a sequence at a planet where all the inhabitants only speak in song and dance, which leads the main characters to fall into some hilarious situations as they attempt to communicate with these individuals. The movie is filled with moments like these that are extremely memorable.

The Marvels contributes to the overarching story in Phase 4

Lastly, those that want to see some progression with the overall Marvel story in Phase 4 will also be pleased. This film shows some continuation of Nick Fury’s character from Secret Invasion, with a possible setup for a future Avengers film, and also continues this phase’s themes of multiverse and the threats that follow. The after credit scenes show how several old and new characters will make an appearance in future movies, progressing this phase forward.

As can be seen, there are a multitude of reasons to watch The Marvels, and longtime fans of Marvel as well as newcomers will both be pleased. This film has something for everyone, for those that follow the lore extensively to those that are not as serious. Definitely catch this film soon, you will not be disappointed.

Exclusive: Power Book IV: Force Showrunner Gary Lennon and Joseph Sikora Explains Why Showcasing Chicago Authentically Mattered on its Second Season

In its recently concluded second season, Power Book IV: Force, guided by showrunner Gary Lennon’s creative direction, has successfully embraced a distinctive and authentic approach, immersing viewers in the vibrant and dynamic inner workings of Chicago rather than having it as a backdrop. Diverging from conventional narratives, Lennon steered the series towards an exploration of the city’s unique character, infusing authenticity into the storyline.

This deliberate shift provided a spotlight on Chicago’s diverse landscapes, cultural nuances, and societal intricacies, offering viewers a richer and more genuine viewing experience. Lennon’s creative vision not only captivated audiences with a compelling storyline but also ensured an immersive journey into the authentic essence of Chicago throughout the season.

“I needed to constrict and expand what didn’t work in season one. I think collectively we all, even myself as a fan of power and a writer of the original show Power as well, didn’t love Season one. I thought there were a lot of missteps. I thought there were a lot of opportunities that weren’t taken advantage of. And so what I did was I just sat with my writers in a room and I said, ‘I don’t think this works, I think we could lose this. I think we could lose that,’” he said.

Driven by a passion for street life, grit, and crime narratives in writing, Lennon expressed a desire to reintroduce these elements into the narrative landscape. Dissatisfied with the initial season’s portrayal, the creative vision sought to capture a more authentic essence reflective of Chicago. This quest led to extensive exploration, riding around in vans to observe locations tied to real-life incidents, aiming to infuse the series with the city’s distinct atmosphere. Intriguingly, Lennon emphasized a keen interest in juxtaposing high-end and low-end dynamics, adding further layers to the storytelling approach.

“Our job as writers was to tell the stories that we were interested in telling and to get rid of the ones like, for example, dahlia. None of us in the writers room felt like that was an interesting story line, and so we jetted it right away and moved on. I knew that I wanted to bring the feds into the story since Tommy had faked his death in New York in the end of the other show so I wanted the feds to become aware of that,” he said.

Lennon is not alone. Joseph Sikora, who plays Tommy Egan and is also a Chicago native, emphasized the significance of highlighting specific moments in the narrative, such as when the character is at the bus stop or during scenes set in a Serbian restaurant. He expressed that these instances capture the life and essence of the city, serving as its lifeblood. Sikora noted the tendency to overlook the intricacies when focusing too narrowly on individual elements, likening it to not seeing the forest for the trees. In commending Gary Lennon, Sikora praised the showrunner’s exceptional ability to portray the distinctive facets of Chicago, steering away from broad strokes and opting for a nuanced approach instead of relying on overarching, generalized images.

“I think that Gary did a really wonderful job of balancing what the reality of Chicago is and that is obviously a very diverse community and population, but also very sectionalized and a very heavy Latin influence. And instead of just using Chicago as a backdrop, I think that we’ve all seen downtown, we’ve all seen the beautiful skyline of Chicago and on the river. But sometimes you haven’t just seen the super marcato, you know, and you haven’t just seen the places in Little Village and actually filming in these neighborhoods where this is supposed to take place,” said Sikora.

Joseph Sikora acknowledging the exceptional contributions to the show’s visual storytelling, credit is extended to the remarkable Director of Photography, Joe Jody Williams. Sikora said his consistent and outstanding work throughout the season was integral to its success. Williams played a crucial role in orchestrating a beautiful and cohesive visual narrative, ensuring a seamless and consistent look that carried through from the beginning to the end of the season. The resulting visual continuity added depth and coherence to the overall storytelling experience.

Running with New Balance Means Running YOUR Way

With the impending TCS New York City Marathon, a long-distance run that sprawled all five boroughs of NYC and over 26.2 miles, New Balance decided to host an event to spotlight specific individuals that had signed up for the marathon, and with the help of New Balance, had taken their game and motivation to the next level. These individuals came from all walks of life and had varying levels of expertise running, and they therefore served as the perfect panelists to channel motivation and generate excitement for the upcoming event.

The event space itself was exuberant and lively, with a bar serving champagne, beer, and wine, and cater waiters walking around with hors d’oeuvres, such as spicy rigatoni vodka and vegetable dumplings. The surrounding walls were emblazoned with the words, “Run Your Way.”

The history of the 1080 sneaker

Along the back of the room was also a display of some of New Balance’s newest creations in terms of footwear, specifically focusing on the 1080 line. A visual diagram of the shoe’s history over 12 iterations was also displayed. I walked around and examined each one while trying a rice ball from the kitchen, and soon enough, the interview with the panelists was announced to begin soon.

Walking onto the stage first was Greydy Diaz, who would serve as the moderator and interviewer for the event. Her backstory was interesting because she had a natural connection with New Balance; she grew up extremely close to a New Balance factory, and could see first hand the impact that brought onto her community. Now, she works as a journalist, producer, and host of the show “Test Run”. She quieted the audience, introduced herself, and ushered in the individuals that would be interviewed.

Moderator Greydy Diaz

Jess Movold, Tommie Runz, Harry Hudson, and Marlon “Chito” Vera walked onto the stage, each person with their own special connection to New Balance and running, and each a participant in the upcoming marathon. Through the interview process, I was able to learn about what motivates each individual, and their unique stories that allowed them to discover running. Jess Movold is an elite runner that is focused on using running as a way to build a community for others, and connect newcomers to the sport. Working as an athlete, coach, creator, and journalist, she works to spread awareness about the benefits of running and make it as assessable as possible.

Tommie Runz used running as a way of coping with his struggles growing up in Detroit while battling addiction, sobriety, and fatherhood. He now works as a content creator and hosts his own Youtube series, which he uses to bring people together and maintain inclusivity, and also uses the platform to talk about his vulnerability and how running has helped him.

Harry Hudson is the most recent advocate of running from those on stage, having only started several months ago, but his story was no less powerful. He battled Hodgkin’s lymphoma early in his life, and as a musician, he used music and running to maintain his physical and mental health. He will be participating in the TCS marathon for the first time this year, and raising money for his charity.

Lastly was Marlon “Chito” Vera, an Ecuadorian UFC fighter who utilizes running to build mental and physical strength, by running thirteen miles each Sunday as part of his training. With this increasing his stamina in and out, he can stay more focused during fights and last much longer than his opponents. The most unlikely out of the panelists to be thought of as a runner, he demonstrated to us that anyone could run.

I truly felt inspired after hearing the panelists’ stories, and I began to reflect on my own workouts and how I may incorporate running to be a part of them. I have traditionally overlooked cardio exercises, but after learning about the overwhelming benefits to the heart, body, and mind, I decided that I would take the initiative to begin running.

Rapper Action Bronson gave a stellar live performance to end the night

I could not run in the TCS marathon this year, but I really want to do so next year, and this would only be possible after becoming comfortable with running. Of course, New Balance would be there with their amazing products along the way.

At the end of the night, we were greeted by a performance by Queens-based rapper Action Bronson and his band, who played a myriad of covers, original pieces, and Action Bronson’s own music. Donning New Balance 990s, his energy and care towards lyricism were truly a sight to behold. On the way out, New Balance employees were giving sneakers to all media attendees, much to my surprise. Internally acknowledging that I had no excuse to avoid running now, I added a reminder to my phone to go on a run the next day. I no longer felt threatened by the prospect, because after all, I would be running my way.

Invincible Season 2, Part 1 Review

The second season of Invincible takes us deeper into the intricate world of its characters. When Omni-Man isn’t helping with Viltrum’s expansion plans, he leads a seemingly ordinary life as Nolan Grayson, alongside his wife Debbie. Mark, his son, has embraced his powers as Invincible.

Based on Robert Kirkman, Cory Walker, and Ryan Ottley’s comic series, Invincible manages to maintain the complex storytelling of its source material. The first season’s shocking revelation of Omni-Man’s true nature sets the stage for an intense battle that has dire consequences for Chicago and its residents.

A poignant aspect of the season is Debbie’s struggle with depression and alcoholism, offering a raw portrayal of her pain. The series addresses concerns about its pacing, delivering more focused storytelling, emphasizing the idea that superpowers do not inherently create heroes but often lead to danger. The introduction of Angstrom Levy, a multi-dimensional portal manipulator, highlights the consequences of good intentions gone awry.

Familiar characters return with their own unique quirks. The Lizard League remains bumbling, while the Mauler Twins bring humor as they navigate their clones. The eccentric Doc Seismic introduces a philosophical perspective, and the Atlanteans are enraged by Omni-Man’s actions. Mark and Amber begin college life, their experiences reflecting the challenges of dating a superhero.

Amidst new beginnings, the threat from outer space looms, reminding us that the Viltrumites won’t let go of their grudges. The complex father-son dynamic between Omni-Man and Mark adds depth to the narrative, leaving us eager to explore the unresolved issues.

The season’s finale for the first half showcases Mark, Amber, and William’s graduation in a charming scene. As the series delves into more nuanced aspects of superhero life, it leaves us contemplating the evolving landscape of the superhero genre, from a childlike fascination with Superman to the teenage angst and violence explored in this generation of superhero narratives. We’re left wondering what a mature, Zen-like superhero story might entail in the future.

In the case of Invincible, it’s evident that the decision to split the season was made with the intention of delivering a high-quality viewing experience. While the wait can be challenging, it’s often well worth it. This structure allows the creators to take their time to deliver a satisfying and well-executed story. So, while the wait may be difficult, it often pays off in terms of the final product.

A Mexican Courtyard Style Restaurant Opens Its Doors in Williamsburg

A Mexican-inspired Courtyard opened its doors to Brooklynites in Williamsburg earlier last month, inviting them to enjoy Mexican gastronomy and culture as they experience the menu for the first time. The popular food district has long been an epicenter for culinary innovation, drawing the attention of food enthusiasts from far and wide. By offering contemporary  interpretations of classic Mexican dishes, Mexi navigates the delicate balance between preserving tradition and embracing innovation.

In an ever-evolving culinary landscape, Mexi distinguishes itself through a commitment to authentic flavors, cultural immersion, and a holistic dining experience. The echoes of Mexico resound not only through the delicious dishes but also through every aspect of Mexi’s decor. Traditional tiles, hand-painted artworks by local artists, and Mexican symbolism create an environment that transports diners to the heart of Mexico. The restaurant breathes life into century-old church pews, reclaimed beams, and custom doors, which stand as artifacts of history, now repurposed for the enjoyment of patrons. Large oil paintings adorning the walls capture the essence of Mexican landscapes, agave plants, and traditional Folklorico Dance Dresses, creating a sensory journey through the country’s diverse regions. Every detail, from the Zapotec Queen-sized rug to artisan hand-painted tiles, adds texture and authenticity to the space, ensuring that Mexi remains a masterpiece in culinary immersion.

Mexi Food 

The Mexi team drew inspiration from their Mexican heritage to create a menu that pays homage to the country’s rich culinary traditions. Spearheading these efforts is Chef Zenaido Hernandez, an experienced talent from the restaurant group, with the consultation of Michelin chef Johan Svensson from Aquavit. At Mexi, everything is made from scratch, from corn tortillas to mole sauces and hand-rolled corn masa dumplings, often referred to as ‘gnocchi,’ showcasing a commitment to authenticity and quality.

  • Fire-roasted tomatillo & jalapeño salsa verde ($14):  Mexi’s salsa verde offers a flavorful and mild option that’s perfect for dipping chips. The tangy notes and smoky heat in the red salsa add depth and variety to the experience.
  • Tuna Serrano Aguachile($19): While not everyone may be a ceviche enthusiast, Mexi’s take on the Tuna Serrano Aguachile is a culinary adventure. The combination of fresh tuna marinated in a cucumber-lime broth, mixed with herbs and vegetables, results in a refreshing and delightful dish. It’s a must-try for seafood lovers.
  • Short Rib Birria Tacos ($24): These open-faced tacos feature juicy short ribs, served with their own consommé sauce, offering a deeply satisfying and richly flavored option.
  • Pork Shoulder Al Pastor ($26): An embodiment of Mexican street food, these taco skewers feature guajillo pepper-marinated pork shoulder, served in a grilled pineapple. Guests have the opportunity to create their perfect bite with complementing salsa matcha, salsa roja, and house-made tortillas.
  • Popover Churros:  For dessert, The Popover Churros, reminiscent of traditional churros, are served with dulce de leche and Mexican Chili chocolate sauces. A sweet and indulgent finish to Mexi’s menu.

Mexi Cocktails 

Curated by Ramon Morado and Carlos Becerra, Mexi’s cocktail menu is a celebration of Mexican spirits, showcasing rare small-batch tequilas and Mexican rums. These ingredients serve as the foundation Mexi’s cocktails that draw inspiration from Mexico’s history and heritage.

  • Mexi in the City: A Mexican-inspired take on the Cosmopolitan, with colors reminiscent of the vibrant streets of Mexico.
  • El Concord: A mix of Margarita and a wine float, symbolizing the historical period when Mexico was occupied by Spain.
  • Maria Felix: Inspired by Mexican Actress and singer Maria Felix, known for receiving roses after her performances, this cocktail captures her essence with its pink and red hues.
  • Sergio Leon: Drawing inspiration from the agave landscapes in Mexico, Sergio Leon incorporates green to represent the agave plant itself, accompanied by foam as part of the fermentation process.
