Manhattan, New York.—In urban aristocratic fashion, Tres Generacionesยฎ Tequila, The Dean Collection, Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keysโ€™ shut down New York City at Silencio NYC on Wednesday February 7th. Silencio NYC is the latest addition to the expansion of the coveted Private Members Club, with its origins in Paris. The exclusive celebration, โ€œJust Because-Aquarius Editionโ€, honored the opening ceremony for the iconic power couple on their new exhibition GIANTS which will open its display on Saturday, February 10, 2024 at the historic Brooklyn Museum.ย

The evening closed with the guests richly satisfied by the open bar and the decadent indulgence ofย  the rich and smokey Tres Generacionesยฎ Tequila and the highlight of a remarkable lifetime experience at the private club Silencio NYC celebrating greatness and prestige with prolific and impactful art and culture leaders, The Deans.

BLACKBARN Launches the Den and Hudson Valley Location

by Megan D'Souza February 8, 2024
written by Megan D'Souza

On Thursday night, we returned to one of our favorite spots in the city: BLACKBARN threw a celebration to launch their new intimate event space: the Den. The Den sits at mezzanine level, a step above the lively dining room below but still enveloped in the restaurantโ€™s cozy barn-chic aura.ย

An exciting new launch, the Den was introduced as the perfect location for intimate dining affairs, birthday dinners, business meetings (itโ€™s equipped with a wall-mounted TV). With its sliding full-length glass doors and hidden satellite bar, the Den is a welcome addition to BLACKBARNโ€™s other event spaces poised to host every occasion.ย

For those who arenโ€™t familiar, BLACKBARN is an American restaurant situated right by Madison Square Park, home to gorgeous views overlooking the park. Its event spaces and coveted vistas are only the beginning of what the restaurant has to offer, though. Their farm-to-table menu delights clientele with local ingredients, artisan flavors and techniques, and a cozy โ€œmodern barnโ€ interior that feels like a special treat and makes you feel right at home. Weโ€™ve been in the past to sample their summer menu and their wine collection, but this was the first time we got to try their winter selection.ย

When we arrived at the restaurant, we were escorted upstairs and greeted with fresh wines and their signature apple whiskey cocktail while we took in the calming atmosphere of their Loft event space. An array of wondrously delicious appetizers floated around the room during the entire night: fried artichoke with goat cheese, black truffle egg yolk souffle served in eggshell cups, breaded lamb-stuffed olives, and many more.

Halfway through the event, Chef / Owner John Doherty came out to tell us about some of the exciting initiatives they are undertaking. A recent event with Netflixโ€™s Blue Zones documentary inspired the kitchen to create more plant-based, gluten-free, and vegetarian menu options. Their new Hudson Valley location at Diamond Mills Hotel in Saugerties offers a dazzling experience: from spa treatments with non-toxic, science-backed products from Comfort Zone to a waterside massage to a personal ferry ride from the spa to the restaurant. We canโ€™t wait to make the trip upstate to try it out!

Halo Season 2

The second season of Halo starts off well, but it still needs improvement

by Julian Cannon February 5, 2024
written by Julian Cannon

In its first season, Halo from Paramount+ got off to a rocky start. The showโ€™s producers went out of their way to change everything that made Halo popular into a sci-fi thriller that happens to have the Halo IP.

During the second season of Halo, certain issues had been rectified that had previously affected its appearance on screen. Halo’s second season clearly addresses and improves on the shortcomings observed in its first season, as we have had the opportunity to review it.

After a startling incident on a remote planet, Master Chief John-117 and his Spartans are convinced that a pivotal shift is imminent in the ongoing war as the Covenant threatens humanity’s most vital bastion. In spite of skepticism from others, he risks all to discover evidence that the Covenant is planning to attack humanity’s most vital bastion. In search of the Halo, which holds the key to humanity’s survival or its ultimate demise, John embarks on a perilous quest.

With Pablo Schreiber’s portrayal of Master Chief in season 2, he explores his complex mental state and PTSD struggles in a captivating manner. As Master Chief struggles to cope with his past trauma and the loss of Makee, the show’s first and fourth episodes capture his emotional depth. Despite Master Chief’s stoic exterior, Schreiber’s portrayal reveals the inner turmoil and vulnerability underneath it.

His nuanced acting captivates audiences from the very beginning, setting the tone for a gripping exploration of Master Chief’s character arc throughout the season.

This season of Halo features standout performances by Yerin Ha, demonstrating her talent and leaving viewers with lasting memories. As a result, the narrative becomes more complex, with moments that captivate audiences and elevate the viewing experience without revealing any spoilers.

Jen Taylor’s portrayal of Cortana in Halo’s second season adds a multifaceted dimension to its narrative. Cortana is more than a technological aide; her interactions with Master Chief resemble therapy sessions more this time around.. Cortana delves into Master Chief’s psyche and helps him navigate traumatic experiences through their conversations.

This season of Halo has elements in common with Halo Reach, as well as references to Halo’s origins. Adapting and remixing several storylines from these iconic games gave the series depth and familiarity. However, what they do with that knowledge and source material is nothing more of fan service instead of advancing the plot and narrative forward.

It would have been nice if everyone on this show didn’t try to take down the enemies with assault rifles. I know that Halo-accurate guns might not look good, but going up against the powerful enemies with the signature Halo sword should have been obvious.

The acting performances, pacing, and lengthy episode duration have been subjects of scrutiny, with some feeling that these elements detract from the overall viewing experience. Despite these criticisms, Halo’s commitment to honoring its video game roots while forging its own path in the realm of television remains evident, offering fans a nostalgic yet fresh take on the beloved franchise.

ALBUM REVIEW: PRICE Releases New Album, ‘C.I.T.Y. (Caught In The Youth)’

by Danielle Niecey February 1, 2024
written by Danielle Niecey

January 31, 2024. Manhattan, New York. —I came to the knowledge of PRICEย on Wednesday, January 24th, 2024 at The CABIN NYC, Manhattan New York where he hosted his exclusive listening session. The Cabin, a quaint venue, opened their doors and greeted myself and several media personalities to a low lit and intimate setting. The Cabin, a cozy eatery with wood paneled walls, infinity mirrors reflecting birch trees, and leather banquettes lining the perimeter of the restaurant greeted us with two warm host, h’oeuvres and beverages as we waited in anticipation for the man of the hour. An ambiance of familiarity set the tone for the private listening session for โ€˜C.I.T.Y. (Caught In The Youth)โ€™, a new album that released on Friday, January 26th, by multi-hyphenate producer, songwriter, rapper and Rapreneur, PRICE.ย

‘C.I.T.Y.’ comes as a follow up project from PRICEโ€™s introductory projects, ‘CLRD’ & ‘FOES’, both garnering over a million streams with high probability that โ€˜C.I.T.Y.โ€™ will surpass both installments in his discography. PRICE offered a live performance that was personable and impressive and encouraged us to listen to the project in its entirety upon release; and what we didn’t realize we’d be experiencing is PRICEโ€™s vulnerability and true expression through his healing and processing from the loss of his cousin while aligning himself to be a community and familial healer.ย

For those new to PRICE as a talent, the prolific songwriter hails from Inland Empire, CA and has paid his dues in the industry, notably recognized as a gifted Lyricist, Songwriter, Producer and Programmer whose penned hit songs for artists such as Travis Scott, Brandy Norwood and more.ย  PRICE has co-written songs with legendary talents that include but are not limited to, Jill Scott, Mariah Carey, Wyclef Jean, Kanye West, Hit Boy, TI, Lil Wayne, Ty Dolla $ign, H.E.R., Lucky Daye, Wale, Rick Ross and many more. Encompassing ranges of sounds and influences that heโ€™s acquired through collaborating and producing for other artists, PRICE also infuses technical prowess and versatility of style in his delivery and vocal arrangements.

‘C.I.T.Y. (Caught In The Youth)’, serves as an ode to PRICEโ€™s late cousin, affectionately known to his peers and colleagues as, โ€˜BIG CITYโ€™. The album hits his listeners with 12 tracks (37 minutes, 23 seconds) of what sounds like the Holistic side of Hip Hop. With sacred chants and ancestral offerings in sound, the word โ€œAsรฉโ€ echoes behind the narratives presentedย  in spoken word and compliment the transition of each song. The album also serves as a reminder to leave the past behind, let tomorrow take care of tomorrow, and enjoy the present. With strong themes of community, family, loveโธบfraternal, romantic, platonic and regional, C.I.T.Y. is raw and unfiltered peering into the mind, life, trials, and triumphs of PRICE. PRICE self produced a large portion of the album except for a few clever assists from PRICEโ€™s longtime friend and GRAMMY award-winning producer, Hit Boy on ‘PROUD’, as well as four tracks from two-time GRAMMY nominated R&B record producer, Darhyl Camper. The project also includes features fromย  T-Pain, Alex Vaughn, and Tish Hyman.ย

On the opening track, ‘CAUGHT IN THE YOUTH’,ย PRICE offers an array of transitions in delivery and sound, both with an empowered focus to become a โ€œgenerational cureโ€ aiming to heal the legacy of brokenness, pain, incarceration and drama that tends to follow black men and the members of the black community. โ€œI refuse to get caught in the youth,โ€ he repeats on the hook of the song, sweeping his listeners in with its catchy appeal; knowing that becoming a statistic of crime, violence or death would not be the legacy he plans to leave behind and that can be avoided with better choices.

โ€œThey thought Iโ€™d be dead by 25…Jokes on you, Iโ€™ve got Angels by my side/ Brown skin with a heart full of pride, Mansa Musa, I feel like the richest man aliveโ€ฆโ€ on MANSA MUSA (featuring T-PAIN), PRICE offers an empowered swagger on the bouncy-track with head nodding rhythms. Malaya, the daughter of the late beloved, follows up as the song fades out, declaring her faith in her new ancestor, and that her father is ever present with her in this waking life. Throughout the progression of the album, PRICE takes us through his internal landscape by way of song, each track like a piece of patchwork of expression that allows us to witness how the loss of his cousin impacted his outlook on life, to his newfound spirit of gratitude and fortitude and how it simultaneously holds him together.โ€œI Rejoice, I rejoice; some might say Iโ€™m cool, some say Iโ€™m crazy, Iโ€™m just trying to flow like God made meโ€ฆcrown myself, finally found my voiceโ€ฆโ€ , on โ€˜REJOICEโ€™, the liberated PRICE expresses that he intends to have a life full of wonderful things because he intends to focus on the positives in life, all while accepting himself and life for what it is and all it brings.

On โ€˜SAGGIN AND BRAGGINโ€™, the artist comes in embracing purpose as well as setting his boundaries as he actively seeks to draw peace into his life and claim all the blessings that he’s worked to earn for him and his loved ones. โ€œNeed a machete and a little headspace (For what?) /Just so I can cut off all the dead weight (cut em off). / Iโ€™m Rialto where theyโ€™re Toe Tagginโ€™ (yeah)/Pants ainโ€™t low when I tell you that Iโ€™m sagginโ€™/ Walked in like hotshot/Ainโ€™t no time for being humble…โ€; it’s evident that PRICE is on a mission to hold his head up high and walk confidently in this world, realizing and fulfilling his dreams every step of the way, while carrying his family legacy on his back. On โ€˜CUZOโ€™, a playful and lighthearted ode, PRICE pays homage to his existing cousins that relate to him like brothers and sisters, shouting out all the amazing things each one has influencedย  and brought to his life.ย

The song that tugs viciously at the audience’s heart strings is โ€˜PROTECTED 2โ€™. This song illustrates the vulnerability and fears of a black man as he struggles to navigate this world in which he lives. PRICE makes a heartfelt plea in his song as he repeats, โ€œ..so yes its true, we need black men to be protected tooโ€ฆjust let my message throughโ€ฆborn in a system built to pressure youโ€ฆso yes its true, we need black men to be protected tooโ€ฆ//

Black men step out side but coming home neverโ€™s been promisedโ€ฆthe ones that said we all equal have never been honestโ€ฆ.they took our male ancestors/put their hands behind their backs and made them watch them rape our women, real mental attacksโ€ฆโ€ this beautiful musical installment shines a light on the concerns, historical and present day, that anyone who’s ever loved, cared for, or adored a man of color, feels; from the desire to protect them from external harm and fear to the yearning to bring them peace of mind in all things. In ‘PROTECTED 2′, PRICE becomes a voice for men who want to cry out and say, โ€œwe matter and we need to be shielded tooโ€, it serves as a reflective piece, a call to action and a somber question , “How will you, the listener, protect black men?” in day to day life.

As the project nears its ending, BIG CITYโ€™s son, Marlon, reflects on the loss of his father through his grief stating that he wishes God took other things from him instead, like โ€œhis bike, his Xbox, Supreme hoodie, or even his basketball court โ€ฆbut not his dadโ€. Songs like ‘REPO MAN’, shows PRICE lamenting, displaying his sadness and disappointments from his loss of family and friends. Though heavy ladened with harps and lyrical punchlines, he is skilled enough to neutralize the weightiness of this theme with catchy hooks on genre-bending instrumentation and arrangements in other follow up tracks like PROUD and BLESS. PRICE displays his skills by creating a formidable and cohesive sound, unique to his brand, andย  universal in its appeal. The influences of sound found in this compilation range from gospel; to blends of Progressive Soul/R&B found on the endearing chart-topping single, ‘CREAM OF WHEAT’ย featuring the soulful songstress, Alex Vaughn. โ€œI donโ€™t think you know just what you mean to meโ€ฆI donโ€™t think you know just what you mean to meโ€ฆskin shea butter smooth you feel like cream to meโ€ฆsweet as apple oatmeal, sweet as cream of wheatโ€ฆโ€ The love ballad, CREAM OF WHEAT, offers a tender landing place for PRICE and his listeners who know love is what we need to heal and navigate in a world that takes much from us on a daily basis. ‘HARDT ST’ is another sensual song that appeals to PRICE’s love for his object of affection, reflective and tender; PRICE declares his love and devotion to his beau, in promises that he has eyes for only her. What’s refreshing about these songs placements is that they are void of bashing his female counterpart, exhibiting his progressive stance and active approach to celebrating women in his life, community, and normalizing loving his woman, openly.ย  ย

Whatโ€™s ever present in this project as a whole is that it’s anchored and does not stray away from his authentic voice as an artist; and PRICE is skillful in his ability to keep his audience engaged in the continuity of his songs by way of talent, range and versatility.ย  PRICE does not allow his eclectic flare to interfere with the continuity of sound or messaging in his album. What I appreciate about PRICE’s expression on this project is that he’s woke, but not so far open that he isn’t relatable. I appreciate that he does not deny his humanity, his journey, his heartbreaks, losses, the career rejections, and his ambitions that powered him through to where he is today in his success.ย  What listeners will equally appreciate is that PRICE never veers off the course from reality, and he is still aware that he needs to move through this life with the self discipline, focus, leveling up and a healed community in mind. While itโ€™s evident that PRICE’s passion is music, its also obvious that he is fueled by his childhood experiences, familial trauma, spirituality, and the desire to positively impact his hometown. He is clear in his intent, motivation and driven by his desire to be a generational cure for many.ย  Its just as PRICE offers on his song, ‘WRITEOUS’, โ€œ…no longer care to debate who Christ is/ Iโ€™m more concerned with bringing people to where the light is/ and making sure no more of my bros get indictedโ€ฆโ€

PRICE aims to live better, be better and bring people to the light of truth and personal freedom. It’s safe to say heโ€™s begun to shine his light through his new album, โ€˜C.I.T.Yโ€™. I highly recommend this palpable and transparent body of work, as a new layer unfolds with each listen, and respectively, with every spin of every song,ย  it gives me comfort knowing that for Malaya, Marlon and PRICE’s sake, that BIG CITY can live and breathe through PRICE’s musical expression.

Finish Dry January Strong with these Delicious Drinks and a Game of Pickleball

by Catherina Gioino January 21, 2024
written by Catherina Gioino

CityPickle is the perfect place to go instead of a bar for Dry January

Yes, you can have fun out with friends without drinking alcohol, and you can stay fit too! Join the rest of the country in playing the fastest-growing sport in the nation, pickleball, instead of going out to a bar and spending another weekend day recovering from the night before.

CityPickle, along with the sport, is growing in popularity all across the city. With its Long Island City location home to New York City’s first indoor pickleball court, you can now play pickleball all yearlong and beat the snowy and cold outdoors. CityPickle’s LIC location offers brand new, state-of-the-art nets, paddles and equipment– and sure looks way better than any tennis court or gym we’ve been. A cute “CityPickle” in subway-mosaic tile lettering adorns a large wall that catches your eye as soon as you walk in– just as there’s a bar in the back that serves up all of the non-alcoholic (and also alcoholic for those who do want to drink!) cocktails you can ask for.

Pickleball offers a social and low-impact sport that anyone can participate in

The Knockturnalย recently visited the LIC flagship (a very short bike ride from the author’s native Astoria home) to celebrate CityPickle and pickleball as a perfect accompaniment to people taking on the Dry January challenge.

As the new year unfolds, many people seek out a fresh start and healthier lifestyle choices. And Dry January is no stranger to that movement, gaining much popularity as a month-long challenge that prompts poeple to reconsider their relationship with alcohol. It offers numerous health benefits, including improved sleep, enhanced mental clarity, and increased energy levels. And people love it, saying the break from alcohol gives them a reset buttton to start the year off with a clear mind.

You probably have a few friends who are attempting the challenge or you may be yourself! And oftentimes the challenge always comes down to one question: how do I hang out with friends without alcohol?

That’s a question Hilary Sheinbaum, author of The Dry Challenge and her newest book, A Journal for Bad Days, has answered countless times before, and she has plenty of advice: literally anything else.

Pickleball counts as one of those things. The Knockturnal joined Sheinbaum and several others interested in the sober-curious movement at CityPickle to play the nation’s fastest-growing sport and to have fun, all sans alcohol– and boy did we have fun.

Sheinbaum gave a speech about joining in on the Dry January challenge over four years ago, saying she and her friend were curious about it and wanted to challenge themselves– and each other. While her friend gave in during the month, Sheinbaum didn’t, and ended up participating in the Dry January again and again.

CityPickle’s Co-founders Mary Cannon and Erica Desai

With CityPickle co-founders Mary Cannon and Erica Desai expressing their gratitude for everyone trying out pickleball, and with a hands-on training on how to play and best tips, we took to the courts. A few swings later, we were professionals and ready to tackle any pickleball that passed through our court.

And seriously, let this author be a pickleball convert because it is so much fun. Having grown up going to public school in Queens where our school trips involved trips to the U.S. Open because it was just a stone’s throw away, I thought tennis was where it’s at, and wow am I so wrong.

One of the most remarkable aspects of pickleball is its inclusivity. Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or a beginner looking for a new hobby, pickleball caters to all skill levels. The rules are straightforward, and the learning curve is gentle, making it easy for anyone to pick up a paddle and enjoy the game.

Often described as a fusion of tennis, badminton, and ping pong, pickleball offers a unique blend of fun, fitness, and social interaction– and that last part is what makes me consider giving up drinking for good if it means I get to play a quick game of pickleball. You won’t see me talking much during a tennis or ping pong game (not to mention the countless sports bars in the city with inadequate ping pong tables– rest assured CityPickle has all the space you need not to feel clustered), but you will see me chatting away between points in pickleball– probably about how much of a pickleball convert I’ve become.

And the LIC location is perfectly aesthetic for those Instagram posts

It’s played in doubles and has a pretty low impact on the knees and joints– or if you’re a bit more competitive like me and the team I’ve played with, still a pretty low impact on the knees. It was super quick to learn, and that’s completely in part thanks to the great team at CityPickle walking us through the rules and making sure we understood why the rules were what they were. Most of all, it was super stress-free and relieving: it didn’t feel like I was playing a sport to get points or had too many rules to follow; instead, it was a sport I picked up quickly and enjoyed playing all night.

To keep us satiated during the gameplay, vegan dips, sliders and tacos were served as we served up aces on the court. Players could choose from a spicy guacamole, lemon and garlic hummus and a beet ricotta dip, and for something more filling, a falafel slider with a beyond perfectly acidic pickled red pepper jam, and crunchy fried cauliflower tacos.

The Gaia Elderberry syrup is part of Gisele Bรผndchenโ€™s favoriteย  smoothie flavor at Erewhon

Although we were bummed to call our games for the night, we walked out with one of the most well-designed and appealing totes I’ve seen, featuring the CityPickle logo before the strings of a paddle. In the tote was Sheinbaum’s newest book as well as a bottle of Gaia Herbs Elderberry Syrup, and Curious Elixir’s booze-free cocktails, including the cocounut pineapple painkiller and a spicy- stormy pineapple margarita. You might recognize the elderberry syrup as part of Gisele Bรผndchenโ€™s favorite and new smoothie flavor that launched at Erewhon this week.

If you want to join in on the pickleball craze, have no fear since there are plenty of options to choose from. CityPickle’s other locations include a pop-up at Industry City, as well as its outdoor locations at Dilworth Park, Wollman Rink, Hudson Yards and Union Square as well as the TWA Hotel if you’re a fan of playing outdoors when the weather gets better.

It Has Been A Quarter of a Century Since The Most Influential TV Show of All Time Premiered

by Ishan Wankavala January 19, 2024

I was but a child in high school when I first randomly choseย The Sopranos from a list of possible shows I could watch on my HBO, and having now completed it several times, it has rocketed up to one of my favorite shows of all time, along withย Breaking Bad andย The Office. With the 25th anniversary of its original premiere upcoming on January 10th, 2024, HBO reached out to me to experience the pilot episode once more in a screening at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Lower Manhattan, in an event that would celebrate the shows popularity, influence, and legacy.

The Alamo Drafthouse VHS collection

The first spectacle was the theater itself. The Alamo Drafthouse was renowned as a theater, restaurant, and bar all rolled into one, offering patrons the unique ability to order food while watching, and having servers bring it to you mid-film. The theater’s love of film was very evident, with a whole room dedicated to professing a spectacular collection of movies all on VHS, and various antique movie posters and memorabilia. It felt like a miniature museum within the theater, and I appreciated the dedication and attention to detail. The theater had also set up aย The Sopranos themed backdrop, complete with a fake meat market akin to the one seen in the show, and a small “outdoor” table at which fans could pose with props and clothing from the show. For a brief moment, I was in the show’s universe, and it was magical.

We headed back to the theater and took a seat while the event began. Each person’s seat had a small gift bag which contained The Sopranos merchandise. Mine had a little Funko Pop! figure of Carmela Soprano, which I thought was cute.

My pizza. Tony would be proud.

The night started with a little bit of trivia about the show, and while I was unable to win a prize for any of the questions, I got all of them correct in my head, thinking of the answer a split second before another individual said it each time (I swear). To prepare for the screening, I ordered a brussels sprout pizza and a specialty banana cocktail.

Banana cocktail from the menu

Finally, it was time to return to where it all started. The lights dimmed, and for the fifth time in my life, the pilot of The Sopranos began playing, and I sat back with a smile on my face. This would be the first time in my adult life that I would be watching this show, and right away I could tell that I was picking up on emotions and motives that I had not previously detected. I saw James Gandolfini Jr. begin talking about the ducks as Tony Soprano once more, and watching his amazing performance and thinking ahead to where this show would go in six seasons, I couldn’t help but realize that I desperately needed to rewatch it. This was a show that had started a golden age in modern television, one which was still ongoing.

Ready for the screening

As I watched Gandolfini Jr.’s nuanced performance, I realized truly the impact that this show has had, and shuddered at the thought of where we would have been without it.

I am currently almost through the first season of the show on my fourth rewatch, and I am enjoying and eagerly anticipating every moment of it. This screening of the pilot ignited a dormant love for the show that I have had for a while, and I hope it did the same to the other attendees at the event. A celebration of this show’s 25th anniversary was the perfect way for HBO to bring new interest to the show, and I hope it remains popular and continues to influence generations to come.
