Tia Mowry recently partnered with Lactaid to create her Creamy Cheddar Potato Soup.

A post shared by TiaMowry (@tiamowry)

This dish is quick and easy to recreate, making it the perfect one-pot meal to feed friends and family. Mowry created this recipe keeping those who have issues digesting meals that incorporate milk products in mind; instead of using real milk, she has substituted that ingredient with Lactaid products. Lactaid is known for its lactose-free items that are ideal for people who have sensitivity to dairy products. This Creamy Cheddar Potato Soup resembles the same texture and creaminess this meal is known to have without the lactase enzyme that causes many people to miss out on their favorite dishes.

Mowry is well known for her roles on the television shows, Sister, Sister and The Game and has joined the Netflix Series Family Reunion as the character Cocoa McKellan. This series also stars Loretta Devine, Talia Jackson, Anthony Alabi, Cameron J. Wright, and more. The show follows the McKellan family, who moves from Seattle to a small-town Georgia to be closer to their extended family. This transition soon causes some clashing as the characters try to mesh varying perspectives and ideals.

The Knockturnal spoke with Mowry about teaming up with Lactaid and how implementing these products has positively changed her life. She also discussed her cookware line, her cookbook called Quick Fix Kitchen, and her YouTube channel Tia Mowry’s Quick Fix, where she uploads cooking videos and shares practical recipes.

The Knockturnal: Tell me a little about your partnership with Lactaid.

Tia Mowry: Yeah, so I of course, have been a huge fan for years after I found out that I had a lactose sensitivity. And I love, of course, food. I’m a foodie! In my opinion, I feel that food brings people together, it’s all about creating moments and experiences. And when I’m hanging out with my family, and my friends, I love to enjoy some of my favorite ingredients and I’ve been a lover of cookies and milk for years. But I didn’t always have the privilege of enjoying an entire glass of milk without any stomach discomfort until I discovered Lactaid. Because Lactaid is 100% real milk, just without the lactose. So I can have an entire glass of milk without any sensitivities, which is fantastic! And I love the texture and the creaminess and the flavor that real milk offers. But, of course, there are sensitivities there. So thank God that there’s an option like Lactaid because it’s real milk just without the lactose.

The Knockturnal: Personally I love using Lactaid especially after showing  signs of sensitivity to lactose, so describe how using Lactaid has helped you?

Tia Mowry: I feel like it’s helped me just continue to enjoy food! Like I said I’m a foodie, I absolutely love food! And I would get sad that I couldn’t really enjoy some of my favorite ingredients. But now that I have an incredible option like Lactaid I can enjoy the things that I love to eat. Like I was telling you milk and cookies. We have a soup that’s in rotation at the house right now. It’s our cheddar potato soup. And I love for my soups to be really nice and creamy. And I’m able to do that because I can go ahead and use Lactaid which my family doesn’t necessarily have to sacrifice losing the creaminess, the texture and the deliciousness that real milk offers. Again, because Lactaid is 100% real  milk just without the lactose so I can enjoy eating some of my favorite foods without any stomach discomfort. So that’s kind of like how it’s changed my life in a positive way.

The Knockturnal: You mentioned your creamy cheddar potato soup, was this recipe something you created on your own or is this a family recipe? How did it come about?

Tia Mowry: So especially during the cold weather, I really love making soups and I’m also just a huge fan of one pot meals. A soup is all about adding in your ingredients, letting it do its thing, stir and then you have something that’s delicious. That’s good for you that fills you up and that the kids absolutely enjoy. It’s just something that I’ve played around with myself. It’s very easy. You just need olive oil, onions with some salt and pepper, some garlic powder, then you throw in those potatoes and throw in some vegetable stock or chicken stock, blend that up. And then I add in my Lactaid milk, which adds that  texture and creaminess and that deliciousness. And then you have incredible soup, it’s very easy.

The Knockturnal: I feel like soup is always a good option! You have a cookware line, cookbook, you’re a part of the Netflix show Family Reunion, tell me a little about all of these projects.

Tia Mowry: So I have a cookbook, that’s been out for a minute. It’s called Quick Fix Kitchen. And it’s basically just a whole bunch of recipes that are practical, that are easy, that are quick, and the whole entire family can enjoy. But I think what’s so amazing about this book is I just don’t focus solely on the recipes, I want to set people up for success in the kitchen. So I teach them about organization, the essentials that you need in your kitchen, when it comes to tools, not only tools, but ingredients, you got your Lactaid right there in the refrigerator. So that’s the book. I have a YouTube channel, Tia Mowry’s Quick Fix, where I upload cooking videos and share quick and easy, practical recipes. And then I have a television show called Family Reunion that’s out on Netflix, which has been a lot of fun. Loretta Devine is in that and she is just so oh Divine. Our show was actually nominated for an NAACP Image Award. This is our third year being nominated. So it’s just great when you see people resonating with your projects.

The Knockturnal: And as you mentioned you have all these different projects, how do you find a balance between working and time with family and friends?

Tia Mowry: I learned very quickly, being a working mother that there is no such thing as balance. So I’ve had to be accepting of that and realize that there is no such thing as 50/50 when it comes to doing all of those things and wearing so many different hats. So basically, what I’ve done, or what I’ve come to terms with, is there are going to be some days where I spend more time on work. And then there are going to be some days where I spend more time with my children. And that’s okay, you know what I mean? I’m just basically giving myself grace. And taking everything a day at a time, not judging if, I don’t cross off everything on my to do list. Just keeping everything fun, enjoyable, having realistic expectations, and  going with the flow. That’s how I could answer that question. Basically. I feel like there’s no such thing as balanced. I thought there was, but  in my opinion, it’s not necessarily true.

The Knockturnal: And we mentioned the Netflix show Family Reunion, what has it been like for you seeing how popular the show has become and the reaction from fans?

Tia Mowry: I always feel first of all grateful that I’m able to continue to do what I love to do. And I consider myself a hard worker. And it’s really nice when you see that people are reciprocating that, I guess joy, should I say in my work, when they are loving whatever it is that you do. I think a lot of people resonate with the show because it’s good, clean, family fun. And also, it’s multi-generational. And what I mean by that is, the whole entire family can enjoy the program. My mother absolutely loves the show. Grandmother’s and Grandpa’s can enjoy the show. And then teenagers can enjoy it, younger kids can enjoy it. Mothers like myself can enjoy it. The characters are very relatable, and realistic. And we talk about such amazing topics, even, you know, some topics that people wouldn’t necessarily talk about or be afraid to talk about, especially when it comes to like racial profiling with young black boys, or how do you discuss the passing of grandparents to  younger kids like, we’ve been able to tackle conversations and topics like that in a very intellectual, yet non scary, entertaining way. And I find that that could be challenging. And I feel like the show has done a great job with that. I’ve had so much fun working on that show andI love that people are enjoying it.

The Knockturnal: What’s your go-to meal to cook?

Tia Mowry: We’ve kind of already said it, my go to quick meal to cook would definitely have to be a simple one pot meal. Because, as I mentioned, you know, I felt like women in general, you know, we balance a lot. But at the same time, I want to be able to put delicious meals on the table for my children and for myself. Soups are the way to go, especially in the wintertime. So I would say it’s the cheddar potato soup right now that I had just mentioned to you. It’s easy, you’re just dumping all of these ingredients in there. You can add bacon and cheddar on top of that, and you are good to go!
