Supernatural threats and relevant real-life tragedies come head to head in Netflix’s newest horror film, ‘His House.’

The film is the feature debut from director Remi Weekes, and it follows a South Sudanese refugee couple that make a dangerous and tragic escape seeking asylum in England. However, once they arrive in the UK, their issues are far from over, because there are housed in a deteriorating old building with some eerie supernatural evils hiding at every corner.

The film stars Wunmi Mosaku (Lovecraft Country) and Sope Dirisu (Gangs of London,) as the leading couple, and as a director, Weekes took the most joy out of the two-person scenes between them.

“I really really enjoy whenever we’re shooting two characters talking. Sope and Wunmi, the two actors, I loved shooting them. Whenever they’re together it’s always an exciting day on set.”

“I hope [audiences gather] empathy,” Weekes also says. “I wanted to tell…I guess maybe not a straightforward but a very simple story about two people and their emotional journey. I know when something like this, that’s usually quite big political or social opinions, and I kind of wanted to leave that to I guess the [core of] the frame and just focus on the people and their story.”

The film stars Wunmi Mosaku (Lovecraft Country) and Sope Dirisu (Gangs of London,) as the leading couple, and in an interview with The Knockturnal, both actors noted that the script’s deeper heart drew them to the project.

“It just really moved me,” Mosaku says. “I have never been more scared whilst reading a script. Scared because of the horror, scared because of the real horror, scared because of the truth, and scared because…we rely on humanity to be humane, and we’re so often not. So I really found the whole thing so rich, and deep, and layered. I loved it”

Dirisu notes, “It could be read as a straight horror because of the monster, or if you remove the monster entirely, you still have a story that is equally as powerful.”
