Exclusive: Nicole Richie Talks New Show ‘Great News,’ Tina Fey & Acting For The First Time

We were on hand at NBC’s Cocktail Reception with cast members of NBC’s mid-season shows at The Four Seasons. We caught up with reality starlet turned actress Nicole Richie to discuss her new NBC primetime show “Great News,” working with boss Tina Fey and acting for the first time.

The Knockturnal: Great News! Talk about how you and Tina Fey came together to do the show.

Nicole Richie: Well I auditioned for the role, the show was already cast. So mine was a recast, so I came in and got it and was shooting the show about five days later. So it was really fast.

The Knockturnal: We have seen you kind of act before with Candidly Nicole, were you at all nervous about such a cool job?

Nicole Richie: I was very nervous. Yes, I was so nervous … I didn’t know what to expect. I had no idea what I was walking into. It ended up being amazing. Everybody was warm and welcoming and it was amazing.

The Knockturnal: How has it been working with the cast? You have a few legends.

Nicole Richie: Yes.

The Knockturnal: What have you picked up from them and how are they helping you?

Nicole Richie: When I’m not shooting my scenes I’m watching them do theirs and taking mental notes and asking them questions and just trying to be around them and, you know, not taking any moment for granted. Just trying to learn while I’m there.

The Knockturnal: Has Tina been giving you some notes? How is it working with Tina?

Nicole Richie: Tina’s an amazing boss. She knows comedy, she knows how to write a comedy. You know, puts the top people in place, to go and do that.

The Knockturnal:  You have such a cute family and we love seeing them on your Instagram. You are already really busy with fashion, how has it been juggling it all?

Nicole Richie: Well, I work in an office every day, any way, so for them — and they’re in school — so it wasn’t a huge deal. It wasn’t a huge shift for them and they were actually able to come and see me on set and be around and … it was a family-friendly environment. So, it made it really easy.

The Knockturnal:  Do they have any idea how big mommy is yet?

Nicole Richie: No. No, they don’t. They don’t know. They’re like “Can you hold my trash?” That’s all they care about.

Great News premieres Tuesday, April 25th at 9pm PST on NBC.
