Still reeling from this week’s season finale of Freeform’s ‘Motherland: Fort Salem’? Don’t fret fans – your favorite warrior witches will be back for a second season, including none other Sergeant Anacostia Quartermain, played by Demetria Mckinney.
In the wake of the recent press release announcing ‘Motherland: Fort Salem’s’ renewal, McKinney couldn’t help but express her pure joy after hearing the exciting announcement.
“Hallelujah!”, McKinney exclaimed while pumping her fist into the air. With a slew of television shows currently awaiting to hear the news on whether or not they will receive another season, it’s no surprise that ‘Motherland: Fort Salem’ has already been given the green light.
“We’re combining magic with reality,” McKinney says in describing how ‘Motherland: Fort Salem’ is set apart. “I think [‘Motherland: Fort Salem’] has it’s edge because we’ve given the sword to someone else….this whole flipping of what we know and reclaiming everything powerful to a woman without diminishing anything else from anyone else is what I think makes this thing so strong – It’s inclusive in a whole different way.”
The supernatural spin that ‘Motherland: Fort Salem’ possess combined with its representation amongst a variety of races, genders, sexualities, and age groups sets a high bar; one in which executive producer and creator Eliot Laurence intends to keep on setting.
“I could not be more grateful for the chance to keep exploring the world of ‘Motherland: Fort Salem,’” Laurence said in a statement. “Freeform has been such a fabulous home for us through the development process, production, post, and marketing. I’m also blown away by the love we’ve gotten from our fans, whose excitement and passion played a massive part in this renewal. Thank you, witches!”
As viewer engagement and numbers continue to rise, making ‘Motherland: Fort Salem’ a top-rated new series for Freeform for the 2019-20 season, McKinney provides insight into what we might be able to expect in the coming season.
“In the future, I think Anacostia is really going to take the bull by the horns – that bull being herself; she’s’ been the right-hand, she’s been the enforcer…. you know, she’s always kind of been there on [General Sarah] Alder’s behalf,” McKinney says. “[Anacostia is] starting to use her own mind she’s starting to form her own judgments and I think we’ll see a lot of that play into season two.”
As for the overall theme that viewers can look forward to seeing in the coming season? “Be who the F you want,” McKinney says with pride. “I think its such a powerful statement, [it’s] saying ‘be whoever you want’, and I think [‘Motherland: Fort Salem’] shows you that.”
If you haven’t been able to catch it yet, you can watch ‘Motherland: Fort Salem’ on Freeform, and look forward to its next season!
