Check out our interview with the “Booty Gang Disciple.”
After recently signing with the newly revived Asylum Records, home to Bone Thugs, Gucci Mane and many more, Ugly God kicked off his tour in Atlanta before heading to S.O.B.S. last Wednesday night. Ugly God is a part of the new wave of rap so much so that he’s Asylum record’s first new signee since it’s return. But there are some things Ugly God likes to keep classic. Ugly God pulled up in Ash Ketchum’s signature hat and for those of you who don’t know, Ugly God is what some might call a “Pokemon purist.” He prefers the old school Game Boy Advance console and games to today’s Pokemon Go app, which we learned during our interview.
Fans cheered “Thanks Ugly God” in between songs, hyping him up as he performed. The catchy “Thanks Ugly God” is actually the intro off of his viral track “Water,” with over 22 million Soundcloud streams and 14 million Youtube views, it has quickly become the fan cry for all Ugly God followers. Fans went crazy for him even jumping on stage to take selfies with the rapper. The concert was so lit that by the end of the night close to 50 fans rushed the stage to rage with Ugly God, before being forcibly removed. Girls were literally throwing themselves at Ugly God and dancing on him as tried to perform. Before the chaos and lituation, we sat down with Ugly God who shared his thoughts on New York, fashion, and the long-awaited “Booty Tape” :
Was it your first time in New York?
This is my second time, but the first time I was literally in the hotel the whole time.
How long are you here this trip?
3 or 4 days.
Any plans while you’re here?
Eat some pizza, make beats. Nothing changes when I go out I still make my beats.
Anyone you wanna link up with while you’re out here?
Caitlyn Jenner.
What about musically?
R. Kelly.
Can you talk about some of your upcoming projects?
I have this tape, that I’ve been working on for about 7 years. It’s called The Booty Tape. I don’t know when I’ll drop it though. I might drop it tonight, but I might drop it tomorrow, but I might drop it in three years. I’ve been working on it of 7 or 8 years now.
What’s been your favorite show so far?
My last one, it was in Orange County, California. Biggest crowd I’d ever been in front of and it was lit.
I saw your Instagram post about wearing fake everything, can you talk about your style? What brands do you like?
All my chains fake. I got that expensive fake sh*t on me. My chains fake, my watch from Walmart $24. My grillz, they fake. I get a haircut every week and my hair cut costs more than what I pay for both of my grillz. I think fake is the new real.
Who are some of your favorite artists?
Lil B, Soulja Boy, Young God, Project Pat, R. Kelly.
Can you talk about what it feels like to be signed to Asylum?
It’s the beginning stages, nothing’s really changed yet. I’m still at home every day making beats. I like the family they’re nice.
Can you talk about the lizard on your nose joke you do on Instagram? Where did that come from?
I’ve been doing that since I was a kid. I had a best friend named Brett when I was 4 or 5 and he really got me into the nature stuff. I love animals and one thing I would always do it put lizzards on my nose and ears and I been doing it always, but I just decided to record it.
Who’re you listening to right now? Who’s on your playlist?
It’s weird I make rap music, but I don’t really listen to rap. Yachty’s the homie, I support him. I listen to him a lot. I listen to more underground underground stuff like instrumentals. It’s called lo-fi.
Where’d the name Ugly God come from?
I know I’m not the best looking man around and I look at Drake, Chris Brown, August Alsina, Justin Bieber and those are the cutest guys and I know I look nothing like them.
