On The Scene: Brunch at The Empire DIner in Celebration of Caran d’Ache in Collaboration with Keith Haring

by Sydney Hargrove November 9, 2023
written by Sydney Hargrove

Though he requires no introduction, renowned American artist Keith Haring is celebrated for his distinctive and instantly recognizable visual language, featuring bold lines, vivid colors, and a recurring cast of characters, including dancing figures and radiant babies. His art is a testament to his activism, using the universal language of symbols and vibrant design to address important social issues, including AIDS awareness, apartheid, and the fight against inequality. Haring’s work transcends time and borders, continuing to inspire and educate generations. His work has been kept alive through the years in nearly every way imaginable, but no collaboration has been more outstanding than Caran d’Ache’s latest collection.

The collection showcases a beautiful blend of Caran d’Ache’s signature pens and art materials reinterpreted with Keith Haring’s iconic visual language. With its notebooks, pens and colored pencils each uniquly inscribed with Haring’s designs, it’s a testament to the intricate attention to detail that sets the brand apart from so many others. Founded in Geneva in 1915, the brand has spent over a century perfecting the creation of high-quality writing instruments and art supplies. Its name, borrowed from the Russian term “karandash” (карандаш), meaning pencil, embodies a rich heritage of creativity and precision that has enamored artists, writers, and connoisseurs of fine tools the world over.

At the heart of Caran d’Ache’s allure is its dedication to quality. Their pencils and colored pencils are marvels of design, precision, and innovation. Whether it’s the smooth glide of a graphite pencil or the rich pigmentation of a colored one, each product is meticulously crafted to offer the best possible experience for those who wield them. Artists, illustrators, and designers often find themselves drawn to Caran d’Ache for the tools that promise not only precision but also a touch of artistic magic.

On Wednesday, guests were treated to a stunning brunch event to celebrate the launch of the highly anticipated collection. It took place at the Empire Diner in Chelsea, a vibrant neighborhood deeply rooted in the NYC arts scene. Guests sipped on brunch cocktails and a curated menu of best eats against a backdrop of the iconic mural above Empire Diner, a stunning tribute to 20th-century modern artists like Keith Haring himself, while hearing all about the collection. To make matters even sweeter, everyone got to take home a piece of the art and channel their very own Keith Haring with gift bags containing pieces from the collection.

The collaboration between Keith Haring and Caran d’Ache is a fusion of Haring’s iconic imagery with Caran d’Ache’s commitment to quality and innovation. This artistic partnership has resulted in limited-edition collections of art supplies, including pencils and other creative tools, adorned with Keith Haring’s signature designs. These art supplies not only serve as a tribute to Haring’s enduring legacy but also as a source of inspiration for artists and creatives who admire his work. Check it out here!

Review: “Poor Yella Rednecks”– One of the Most Memorable Shows of the Year

by Bianca Brutus November 8, 2023
written by Bianca Brutus

Writer Qui Nguyen’s play “Vietgone” is the “slightly” true story about his parents meeting in a Vietnamese refugee camp in Arkansas. They have a multitude of factors against them from his father already being married and his mother failing to become accustomed to her new life in the U.S.

“Vietgone” is the first part of their story.

“Poor Yella Rednecks” completes it.

This show follows Tong (Maureen Sebastian) and Quang (Ben Levin) attempting to put down roots in Arkansas. Things don’t come easy for them as infinitely, racism, and poverty begin to immerse their life. However, the couple, their son, and Tong’s overbearing mother Huong (Samantha Quan) learn a few lessons along the way that assist them in growing as a family.

Qui Nguyen is best known for his work with Disney as both a writer on “Raya and the Last Dragon”  and “Strange World”. Based on this, his love of fantasy and pop culture flourish in his theater works. For example, in the beginning of the play, the Playwright (Jon Norman Schneider) passes the reins to the greatest storyteller of all time for the introduction—Stan Lee. Nguyen creates a script and story that is not only filled with humorous references to pop culture, but with salacious and witty dialogue. A few minutes into the play, an elder Tong informs her son she wants him to write her words in the same cadence as white people. As he types, her Vietnamese accent is suppressed by a valley girl accent and a great amount of cursing.

The comedic elements of the play are truly unique. It’s not only the wording, but also the actions of the ensemble. Nguyen uses rapping to convey the feels of multiple characters.  It could be viewed as an absurd choice to some, however, the direction to include rapping is brilliant. In the beginning of the story, Tong tells the Playwright that she wants him to write something that white people will enjoy. When thinking about theater these past few years, many immediately think of the legacy that Hamilton has left to where rapping can be considered an art form within theater. However, one would be surprised to find that not all musicals have rapping in them especially older white people who are Broadway’s biggest fans.

Nguyen’s uses of satire and absurdity are another aspect to the production’s brilliance. Little Man is voiced by the Playwright, but a puppet is used as his body. There are a number of fight scenes inspired by anime paired with the use of dramatic music to where scenes feel ridiculous. One would even begin to question what’s going on; and that is exactly where the charism of the production lies. Director May Adrales lets the audience feel as though they’re trapped by oddity, but deep down the production reveals harsh truths.

Maureen Sebastian, Samantha Quan, a puppet, and his puppeteer, Jon Norman Schneider in “Poor Yella Rednecks”

A major theme that Nguyen nails perfectly in the production is assimilation. Little Man struggles to learn English and one of the most touching scenes is the one in which Huong tells him that she is willing to not speak to him so that he can learn English. She accepts that for him to have a normal childhood, she has to distance herself. Furthermore, the switching of languages and refusal to put a Vietnamese accent on the characters is another way in which assimilation is shown. While it may be considered a satirical choice, unfortunately it goes to show how for the most part immigrants have to dial back on their native language to be accepted into society. It’s a hard truth that carries the entire play.

The cast’s chemistry is magnificent. There’s such great tension between Sebastian and Levin as the couple that one doesn’t have to imagine them as struggling pair, you simply feel it. Quan plays a wise, and oftentimes harsh Huong. Huong is sure to be a fan favorite amongst audience goers. However, we can’t forget about Paco Tolson as Bobby, Tong’s on-and-off boyfriend. Bobby’s timidness and genuine curiosity made for some of the greatest running jokes of the entire production. Overall, each cast member accomplishes playing off one another’s strengths. You’d often desire to see the characters again once they are off stage.

Jon Norman Schneider, a puppet, and Ben Levin in “Poor Yella Rednecks”

The scenic design of “Poor Yella Rednecks” is another remarkable aspect of the play. Tim Mackabe’s use of giant yellow letters spelling out “YELLA” not only added to the visual impact, but served as a clever mechanism for scene transitions. Each letter became a transformative element, seamlessly shifting the atmosphere and transporting the audience to different settings. Never has there been a show that uses such smart and intentional staging. Overall, “Poor Yella Rednecks” is the testament of an exceptionally talented cast and crew led by the even more exceptional direction of Adrales.

“Poor Yella Rednecks” is funny, fearless, and fantastic! The audience I sat in skewed a little older and less diverse than I hoped. The theater world continues to diversify itself on stage, but the audiences tell a different story. This is a story I highly recommend for those who are younger and who are like me—a first-generation immigrant. The story of “Poor Yella Rednecks” is something I and many others can relate to. Not belonging, being unseen, and having to change oneself to be accepted by the majority. But, “Poor Yella Rednecks” isn’t only about the trials of assimilation. It’s a celebration of family, forgiveness, unconditional love, and perseverance. It’s a story about the people who struggle the most, but are truly the heart of this country.  My hope is that everyone can feel the spirit of “Poor Yella Rednecks” as we think of the future of our country.

“Poor Yella Rednecks” is a Manhattan Theater Club production running now at New York City Center Stage.

Tickets can be found online.

Invincible Season 2

Invincible Season 2, Part 1 Review

by Julian Cannon November 5, 2023
written by Julian Cannon

The second season of Invincible takes us deeper into the intricate world of its characters. When Omni-Man isn’t helping with Viltrum’s expansion plans, he leads a seemingly ordinary life as Nolan Grayson, alongside his wife Debbie. Mark, his son, has embraced his powers as Invincible.

Based on Robert Kirkman, Cory Walker, and Ryan Ottley’s comic series, Invincible manages to maintain the complex storytelling of its source material. The first season’s shocking revelation of Omni-Man’s true nature sets the stage for an intense battle that has dire consequences for Chicago and its residents.

A poignant aspect of the season is Debbie’s struggle with depression and alcoholism, offering a raw portrayal of her pain. The series addresses concerns about its pacing, delivering more focused storytelling, emphasizing the idea that superpowers do not inherently create heroes but often lead to danger. The introduction of Angstrom Levy, a multi-dimensional portal manipulator, highlights the consequences of good intentions gone awry.

Familiar characters return with their own unique quirks. The Lizard League remains bumbling, while the Mauler Twins bring humor as they navigate their clones. The eccentric Doc Seismic introduces a philosophical perspective, and the Atlanteans are enraged by Omni-Man’s actions. Mark and Amber begin college life, their experiences reflecting the challenges of dating a superhero.

Amidst new beginnings, the threat from outer space looms, reminding us that the Viltrumites won’t let go of their grudges. The complex father-son dynamic between Omni-Man and Mark adds depth to the narrative, leaving us eager to explore the unresolved issues.

The season’s finale for the first half showcases Mark, Amber, and William’s graduation in a charming scene. As the series delves into more nuanced aspects of superhero life, it leaves us contemplating the evolving landscape of the superhero genre, from a childlike fascination with Superman to the teenage angst and violence explored in this generation of superhero narratives. We’re left wondering what a mature, Zen-like superhero story might entail in the future.

In the case of Invincible, it’s evident that the decision to split the season was made with the intention of delivering a high-quality viewing experience. While the wait can be challenging, it’s often well worth it. This structure allows the creators to take their time to deliver a satisfying and well-executed story. So, while the wait may be difficult, it often pays off in terms of the final product.

Fear The Walking Dead Season 8, Episode 9 Review

by Julian Cannon November 5, 2023
written by Julian Cannon

This week’s installment of Fear The Walking Dead offers an emotional rollercoaster that keeps viewers engaged and invested. The standout performance of Austin Amelio as Dwight is a testament to his acting skills, bringing depth and authenticity to the character.

Dwight’s journey takes a compelling turn when he encounters Jay, whose storyline eerily mirrors Dwight’s introduction to the series. Jay’s harrowing experience, losing his wife and son to the group at the sanctuary, injects the narrative with a poignant layer of tragedy and resilience.

The episode delves into Dwight’s tumultuous past as a Savior, a theme that amplifies the complexity of his character. Notably, the scene where Dwight places a character into a furnace harkens back to Negan’s brutal methods, underscoring the internal turmoil Dwight grapples with.

The tension and emotional weight continue to escalate as Jay undergoes a grim transformation into a walker. Dwight’s heart-wrenching plea for Daryl to end Jay’s suffering encapsulates the raw essence of the show’s exploration of morality and humanity.

In a thought-provoking subplot, Dwight faces off against Sherry, highlighting a moral quandary. Sherry’s determination to convince Dwight to return to PADRE and honor his late son by training the abandoned children provides a compelling ethical dilemma.

Overall, this episode brilliantly explores the characters’ shared pasts and their ongoing struggles to find purpose in a post-apocalyptic world, making it a standout installment in the series.

Inside ‘Charlie at the POM Springs Hotel’s’ Furry Launch Pawty

by Brittany Skyler November 4, 2023
written by Brittany Skyler

Soho’s Animal Haven housed the cutest paw-ty you’ve ever seen for the most anticipated children’s book, Charlie at the POM Springs Hotel; at least that’s what Amazon says.

Brittany Aubain

The #1 book on Amazon’s New Releases, written by Lara Eurdolian King and illustrated by Chamberlin Newsome, tells the story of the real-life Pomeranian, Charlie, whom King adopted on a trip to Palm Springs with her husband. Charlie went from living in the lobby to starring in his own story (and wine bottles from ONEHOPE.) *ONEHOPE offers a platform to donate 10% of the proceeds to benefit nonprofits chosen by customers.*

Brittany Aubain

Last time, we checked out the Poms and PJs party on Fifth Avenue, and this adorable “Launch Pawty” was just as fabulous as the last. Dog owners toured around the different vendors presented by the FIT Foundation, like BondVet. Charlie spent most of his time hanging out on the shelves of Royce and Rocket. We also spotted the coziest dog beds from LeSure Pets, and all of your dog grooming needs by PetLife Unlimited.

Brittany Aubain

When not looking at all the sweet doggie gifts, guests occupied themselves for the two-hour event with TapSnap 1165’s photobooth, Reiki with Kesaine, food by Williamsburg Pizza, Baked by Melissa,  Soiree, and Blobs.

Wait. Did we even mention that star-studded lineup of hosts? We met up with Chris Redd (Saturday Night Live), Patricia Field (Oscar-nominated Emmy Award-winning costume designer), Orfeh (Tony and Grammy-Award nominee), Andy Karl (Olivier Award-winning, Tony Award Nominee Broadway legend/TV Star), Natalie Negrotti (Big Brother/The Challenge Finalist), KhrystyAna (America’s Next Top Model), and Alicia Quarles (GMA3).

On the way out, guests were treated to the most adorable custom Charlie gift bags by Print All Over Me. Inside were go-to goodies from Thrive Cosmetics, RPZL blowouts, and Powderful.

As fun, as it is to mingle at a party as fun as this, it is all the sweeter when a great cause is involved, as the night raised awareness and funds for animal adoption. Additionally, 100% of the proceeds from book purchases throughout the night went to Animal Haven. It doesn’t stop there; at least $1 from the book’s proceeds will go toward animal welfare groups.

When discussing Charlie at the POM Springs Hotel ahead of its November 7 release, author King stated, “We’re thrilled and humbled to see the warm reception of Charlie’s story. This book is all about embracing different families and the love that unites them. It’s been an incredible journey, and we’re honored to share it with the world.”

As we approach the holiday season, Charlie at the POM Springs Hotel is the perfect gift for the little dog lovers. You can get your copy at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Walmart, and Pretty Connected.
