On The Scene: Seeing Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour Concert Film With Dolby Cinemas!

by Sydney Hargrove October 20, 2023
written by Sydney Hargrove

This summer, the closest that I got to attending Taylor Swift’s infamous Eras Tour was in fact sitting on my couch and scrolling Twitter to see an array of super cute outfits and eagerly awaiting the nightly surprise song. On top of that, being met with complete devastation when Mexico City received Cornelia Street, my favorite song of all time. That’s not to say that I didn’t wholeheartedly try to receive tickets, but in recent times, obtaining a concert ticket is basically the equivalent to winning the lottery, if the latter required a lot more patience and an internet connection of steel.

So I may not have won the Ticketmaster war, but I still enjoyed the concert from my home, and even had a few friends Facetime me from their seats at the MetLife show. Still, that didn’t stop my longing for getting to experience the full show firsthand, complete with the visual effects and impeccable sound quality. That was, until this last week, when Swift herself announced that the concert would be coming to the big screen, with an immersive concert film experience!

The concert film promised to bridge the gap between devoted fans and those who missed out on the live experience due to factors like high demand, ticket prices, and even technical glitches, and was the perfect way for me to experience what I was missing.

The film quickly became a sensation, breaking records with a staggering $92.8 million in its opening weekend, making it the highest-grossing concert film in history. Swifties worldwide flocked to theaters to relive the magic of the Eras Tour, eagerly anticipating a unique cinematic journey.

The movie-going experience has evolved over the years, with each era (no pun intended) bringing innovation, excitement, and immersion to the audience. In this ongoing quest for an unparalleled cinematic adventure, Dolby Cinemas have emerged as a beacon of excellence, offering a movie experience like no other.

Dolby Cinema allows you to catch subtle details and ultra-vivid colors (courtesy of Dolby Vision) and hear sounds come alive all around you (thanks to Dolby Atmos). So, it was time for us to get ready to be completely immersed in Taylor’s world, where we were promised to pick up on all the easter eggs, be mesmerized by the dazzling, bejeweled costumes that pop on screen, and, of course, be enveloped by her masterful catalog.

One of the most striking aspects of the Dolby Cinema experience is the visual quality. Equipped with state-of-the-art projection systems, Dolby Cinemas ensure the clearest, most vibrant imagery imaginable. Dolby Vision, a high dynamic range (HDR) technology, coupled with dual laser projection, brings out the deepest blacks, brightest whites, and the entire spectrum of colors in between. The result is a picture that is lifelike, immersive, and exceptionally detailed. When you step into a Dolby Cinema, you’re not merely watching a movie; you’re inside the story. This, as you can imagine, made for the ideal viewing experience for the concert film. The curved, floor to ceiling screen and stadium style seating made it feel like you were at the concert firsthand, albiet with way comfier seats.

A hallmark, and possibly the hallmark of Swift’s live shows, is the immersive sound experience, which is the heart of what I missed out on during my Twitter listening sessions. Her music, lyrics, and powerful vocals come to life, enveloping the audience in a mesmerizing audio landscape. Dolby Cinema’s Dolby At mos technology, with speakers placed strategically around the theater, allows the film’s soundtrack to surround the audience. It replicated the feeling of being at a live concert, where the music reverberates from all directions. For us, the experience was not just about hearing but feeling the music, making Dolby Cinema the perfect place to immerse yourself in The Eras Tour.

In my opinion, the transition from real-life concert settings to a cinema environment can be seamless and tailored to enhance the overall experience. Dolby Cinemas understand the importance of creating the right atmosphere. The transition from illuminated walls and ceilings to the dimmed theater happens effortlessly, allowing you to focus on the film. The ambiance perfectly complements the mood of the concert, enhancing the connection between you and Taylor Swift’s performance.

All in all, I can not possibly recommend Dolby Cinemas for your Eras Tour Film viewing experience, more. To experience the magic for yourself and find the closest Dolby Cinema near you, click here!

Director Garth Davis Talks New Movie ‘Foe’

by Candace Higgins October 18, 2023
written by Candace Higgins

Where the two worlds of sci-fi and AI collide, Foe follows a married couple living on a dying Earth. Hen (Saoirse Ronan) and Junior (Paul Mescal) farm a secluded piece of land, but their quiet life is thrown into turmoil when an uninvited guest shows up at their door with a startling proposal.

The year is 2065 and people are looking to space as a way to survive. In order to colonize space, the government is funding a recruitment of particular individuals to help build their new spaceship oasis. Cue Terrance (Aaron Pierre), who has been sent down to recruit Junior to trade two years of his life for two years in space. Junior, uninterested, as he is content with his life denies participation but this proposal cannot be refused. Junior caves and the little time left he an Hen have, the pair faces uncertainty about their relationship and future, as Hen is looking for more. Terrance offers them one bit of solace: there will be a flesh-and blood-clone of Junior here on Earth to keep Hen company once the real Junior leaves for space.

The AI Junior almost proves to be too good and when the real Junior returns, the couple must face a tough choice: to take control and change direction or fall asleep at the wheel.

Directed by Garth Davis and based on the novel by Iain Reid, Foe explores themes of self-determination, love, and the preciousness of time.

Foe is currently in theaters.

Film Review: Dicks the Musical: A Raunchy Musical Parent Trap That’s Disturbing…But In A Good Way

by Bianca Brutus October 17, 2023
written by Bianca Brutus

There were a number of high expectations for “Dicks: The Musical” as the film is A24’s first musical film. Thinking of the studio’s recent Oscar sweeps and reputation for producing critically acclaimed films, does “Dicks: The Musical” stand out?

Absolutely.

With “Dicks:The Musical”, Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson have created a story that’s .

Craig (Sharp) and Trevor (Jackson) are two businessmen who come into each other’s lives after a company merger. They soon become enemies after meeting due to their competitive nature and the title of “Top Businessman” being at stake. But soon, their competitive nature subdues after they find out their identical twins. The men then try to figure out why their parents abandoned them and soon switch lives for a day to get to know their other parent. They later envision how much better their lives would be as an entire family so they decide to come up with an elaborate plan to get their parents back together.

Now if you’re thinking this is pretty much “The Parent Trap,” you’re incorrect as “Dicks: The Musical” is unabashedly raunchy to the point Disney would never even touch the script. The film pushes beyond acceptable boundaries for comedy, and that’s exactly what makes it one of the strangest, but funniest movies of the year.

“Dicks: the Musical” is a surprise that oftentimes is pretty ludicrous, but hilarious. An example can be best seen through the Sewer Boys, swamp creatures that live in a cage with the boy’s father Harris (Nathan Lane). Harris takes care of the Sewer Boys in such an odd way that many humorous scenes are a result of their interactions.

The cast is filled with brilliant choices. Bowen Yang as God felt perfect. Yang brings his SNL skills to the big screen with each of his lines feeling more improved than scripted. Megan Thee Stallion pretty much acts as herself which makes her character all the more excellent. She’s Gloria, Trevor and Craig’s boss who ensures that they keep working hard to keep sales Roomba parts factory up. (Yes, that’s where they work, it’s literally a factory that sells Roomba parts and not the product) Furthermore, her number “Out Alpha the Alpha” is the one of the best in the film with her showing off her femme fatale side and notable rap style that we know and love.

Dicks: The Musical' is the Surreal Queer 'Parent Trap' We Didn't Know We Needed | GQThe chemistry between Megan Mullally as the boy’s mother Evelyn and Lane as their father was unmatched. Both actors are strong on their own, but together they added an extra layer of intrigue. Mullally is a seasoned comedian so it comes as no surprise, and Lane has had a number of comedic roles in the past in different mediums. Mullally’s performance is strange, but quite amusing to the point where one wonders how she didn’t break character multiple times.

In terms of production value, the movie excelled.  The set design matched the film spot on. As each musical number is eccentric and campy, the film itself follows suit. The car the boys are seen in feels almost like a fake old Hollywood 50s car. The decor in both parents’ homes captures a vintage vibe and some scenes feel right out of the old Warner Brothers lot, even though the film is set in the present day. The costumes are additionally flamboyant which added to the film’s overall whimsical tone by being both bold and striking. The story’s overall speed was improved by the cinematography and editing, which successfully captured the humorous moments.

However, with all these elements combined what truly sets the film apart was the musical aspect. Each song and dance number worked well and further pushed the plot along while being woven into each scene excellently. Additionally, the focal point of the musical numbers were less about vocal ability or dance skills, and instead about the lyrics and their interpretation. Each actor truly translated the lyrics well with their performance and there were no beats missing. Yet, there were times when ridiculousness of the musical numbers bordered on surreal, and confusing. This unique strategy would not appeal to everyone, but for those who can embrace the bizarre, it increased the suspense and interest in the film.

“Dicks: The Musical” is a 90-minute now stop jaw-dropping comedy full of moments guaranteed to leave you wondering how the movie got made. Even in a post credit blooper scene, Sharp and Jackson ask that same question, but after watching the film, why wouldn’t it made.

“Dicks: The Musical” is now running theaters.
