by Kadeem Lundy November 1, 2023
written by Kadeem Lundy

November 1st is the fourth annual Black Entrepreneurs Day, and to celebrate, a special taped event curated by FUBU Founder and Shark Tank venture capitalist Daymond John was held at New York’s Apollo Theater. The event helped celebrate Black businesses and inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs while showcasing remarkable Black talent.

Black Entrepreneurs Day which was filmed over two days, featured guest appearances by influential figures such as Whoopi Goldberg, Anthony Anderson, Cedric the Entertainer, Shaquille O’Neal, Cari Champion, Sloane Stephens, Ice T and Flavor Flav. Rick Ross also performed in honor of celebrating the 50th anniversary of Hip-Hop.

One of the highlights of Black Entrepreneurs Day is the “NAACP Powershift Entrepreneur Grant.” This year, the grant will award over $200,000 in black business grants, providing crucial support to Black entrepreneurs seeking to take their businesses to new heights. Also a pitch competition was presented by Shopify in which three aspiring entrepreneurs pitched their products to guest celebrity investors. The winner received $25,000 to help develop and market their product, and all three finalist received business mentors. “We may be three years out from the George Floyd travesty and the height of support for Black Lives Matter, but the need for resources and community support for our Black businesses remains paramount. I salute our partners who year after year, support our mission to educate and inspire Black
entrepreneurs around the globe,” said John. Some of this year’s partners included Meta, SalesForce, The General Insurance, JP Morgan Chase and McDonalds.

Black Entrepreneurs Day has rapidly become one of the largest and most acclaimed Diversity and Inclusion events in the United States. In 2022 alone, it garnered over 7.6 million broadcast viewers and received two Webby Awards. Viewers who were unable to attend tapings in person can watch a stream of the event starting at 7pm on November 1st.

written by Chantell Hayden

Located in the birthplace of Hip-Hop, The Hip Hop Museum will open in 2025 and soon the world will be able to experience the cultural history and impact of Hip-Hop music.

In the meantime, the museum has joined forces with CÎROC and Mass Appeal to commemorate 50 years of Hip Hop by taking the museum on tour to various U.S. cities through Dec. 9.

The Hip Hop Museum Tour started in NYC on Oct. 14. and will make its way around to cities like Houston, Los Angeles, Charlotte and Miami.

The pop-up included special memorabilia from from 1973-1990, including Biz Markie’s nameplate chain and rhyme book, the party invite to DJ Kool Herc’s “Masterpiece” party that started it all and Run-DMC’s original Adidas sweatshirt.

The night started with a brief panel with museum curators and Hip-Hop historians Paradise Gray and Pete Nice, where they thanked everyone for coming and gave some insight to how the museum was brought together.

DJ Hurricane, who is known for his work with The Beastie Boys, set the vibes for the night.

CÎROC provided custom-crafted cocktails, taking inspiration from Atlanta’s Hip-Hop culture, featuring selections like “Mojo Handle” and “The ATL.”

Atlanta’s very own Baby Tate made a special appearance on stage with Paradise and Pete where she discussed her musical upbringing and influences growing up in Decatur, GA.

The rising star built a pretty successful career over the past few years due to her musical versatility and ability to experiment with different sounds.

She briefly partnered with Issa Rae’s music label Raedio for a few years before signing with Warner Records in 2021 and scoring a Grammy nomination for her contributions to Dreamville’s Revenge of the Dreamers project.

From Rap to R&B to Pop, Baby Tate has mastered her own distinctive style. On the brink of unveiling her forthcoming EP, Sexploration: The Musical, we spoke with Baby Tate at The Hip Hop Museum Tour in Atlanta where she tells us Hip Hop means to her, what to anticipate from Sexploration: The Musical and how she handles online trolls.

by Brittany Skyler October 30, 2023
written by Brittany Skyler

Loud music, laughs, and congratulations echoed through The House of Cannabis in SoHo for the launch of the new Starter X Cookies capsule collection. “ALL CITY.”

The recently released collaboration is a match made in heaven, as the two businesses are titans in their respective fields. Starter was launched in 1971 and has since changed the sports apparel game forever with licensing deals with every prominent American sports league and more professional sports teams than other brands donned Starter. Not to mention, megastars, including Justin Bieber, LL COOL J, Missy Elliot, Jay-Z, Will Smith, Snoop Dogg, Run DMC, and many more have sported the brand.

On the other hand, rapper and entrepreneur Berner founded Cookies, whose street credit has made them highly sought-after in the global market.

“ALL CITY” features the Cookies X Starter II jackets. They currently come in black and gray, blue and orange, red and gold, and purple and gold, definitely a design for everyone. The designs and silhouettes are derived from the early ’90s style, combining streetwear, sportswear, and nostalgia, sure to turn heads on the subway.

After striking up a few conversations with influencers and business owners, we concluded that they projected the collection to see success. The preparation of the carefully thought-out design, with the right timing, as the 90s/Y2K isn’t going anywhere, soon, makes the “ALL CITY” jackets a closet staple.

The “ALL CITY” collection was enough to keep people talking all night, but the music by Scream Jones and the food by PLNT Burger were the perfect complement to keep the vibes going all night and then some.

2nd Annual Bison Honors Awards and Royal Blue Gala

by Gaëlle Claude October 30, 2023
written by Gaëlle Claude

Howard University, also known as the Mecca, has helped to create black history in the Washington D.C. area and the nation.

Howard University’s Homecoming evokes more than collegiate nostalgia; it is an annual celebration of black culture, talent, and history. This year’s homecoming was even more memorable as we celebrated 50 years of hip-hop culture. Since 1991, the institution has been critical in elevating and embracing hip hop through the Cultural Initiative’s Hip Hop Conference. The first conference highlighted the evolution of the art form.

This year, Howard University hosted the second annual Bison Honors Awards Dinner and Royal Blue Gala. Noteworthy alums, current students, and young professionals got to network and learn about the importance of hip-hop in the Black community. The purpose of this event was to celebrate the legacy, leadership, and history of the Mecca. During the Bison Honors Awards Diner and Royal Blue Gala, the audience took part in educational sessions hosted by prominent Howard University alumni and several guests. The second panel celebrated the 50th year of hip hop by engaging in discussions hosted by music producer Ron “Amen Ra” Lawrence, entertainment attorney Dedra Tate, Shabazz Fuller, and many other notable individuals. To close out the ceremony, Howard University presented the Bison Honors Living Legend Award to Professor Vera Katz, Emerita, for her 32-year career as a professor in the university’s Art Department. Her notable students include Debbie Allen, Anthony Anderson, Chadwick Boseman, and more.

The second annual Bison Honors Awards Diner and Royal Blue Gala was a great way for the Howard community to congregate and celebrate the history of this institution.

Cipriani Host WWD 2023 Honors

by Branda Ayo October 28, 2023
written by Branda Ayo

On the evening of October 24th, Cipriani South Street hosted the highly anticipated WWD 2023 Honors, a dazzling event that brought together the titans of fashion and entertainment. It was more than just a night of glitz and glamour; it was a reminder of the industry’s profound impact and the individuals who make it all possible.

The venue, nestled by the Staten Island Ferry with a breathtaking view of the New York Harbor, set the stage for an unforgettable evening. Attendees arrived in style, embracing the night’s theme that seemed to revolve around Dior. The unmistakable presence of Dior bags and insignia paid homage to Maria Grazia Chiuri’s influence, a designer who has brought a unique touch to the fashion house. Grazia Chiuri has broken a long-standing tradition by being the first woman to helm the Dior women’s line, succeeding a line of male creative directors.

The annual WWD Honors Gala is a celebration of trailblazers who have left a mark on the fashion industry over the past year. WWD recognized outstanding designers, fashion brands, beauty houses, and retail companies for their contribution to the space. Notable guests included Madelyn Cline, Thomas Doherty (Wearing B57 Dior by Kim Jones shoes), Christopher Briney, Lola Tung, Kathryn Newton, Myah’la Herrold, Melissa Roxburgh, Carolina Herrera, Wes Gordon, and others.

One luminary of the evening, Dries Van Noten, arrived to accept an award, dressed in his own creations, confidently stating, “I’m wearing me.” Notably, some designers chose to step away from the Dior camp, such as honoree Jaques Agbobly, a talented designer from Togo & Ghana. Agbobly sported a jacket from his Agbobly line and a striking Neon Telfar bag, exuding the vibrant spirit of Black fashion. His braided hairstyle, skillfully done by Hairstylist Helena from Slayed In Braids, perfectly complemented the look, reflecting a harmony of colors and a shared appreciation for cultural aesthetics.

Among the distinguished guests, Jennifer Lawrence graced the event in a Dior Spring 2024 black wool dress, presenting the John B. Fairchild Honor for Lifetime Achievement Award to Dior Creative Director Maria Grazia Chiuri. This honor recognized Grazia’s illustrious career, solidifying her status alongside fashion icons like Tommy Hilfiger.

We asked honoree Gucci Westman, Co-Founder & CEO of Westman Atelier, who accepted the Best Performing Beauty Company, Small-Cap Award what advice she would give her younger self, Gucci responded, “Be brave, stretch yourself, be grateful, and soak it all in.” In a similar vein, Thomas Doherty conveyed the essence of the event, saying, “It’s fashion; it’s always chic; it’s great; enjoy.”
