On The Scene: A First Look at New York City’s Balloon Museum!

by Sydney Hargrove November 10, 2023
written by Sydney Hargrove

If you’re anything like me, anything with low, colorful lights and a ball pit will surely catch your eye. Maybe it’s my affinity for maximalist decor or the fact that I am more than likely a 10 year old trapped in the body of a 20 year old journalist, but I digress, the era of museums that double as adult (and kid!) playgrounds popping up (and coming to stay) all throughout my New York City home has been the perfect one for me to be living through.

It is because of the aforementioned affinity that I have such a vivid memory of season two of Emily in Paris. The Balloon Museum takes center stage in episode seven, titled “How to Lose a Designer in 10 Days.” The pop-up exhibition, initially located in Paris during filming and now residing in downtown Manhattan, gained significant attention during its time at La Grand Hall de la Villette, attracting over 800,000 visitors from April to September 2022. This success prompted its move to Milan, following a previous installation in Rome from December 2021 to May 2022.

The Balloon Museum, self-described as the “first incubator of artworks and installations completely created by inflatable and balloon art,” showcases immersive environments featuring works by international artists. As seen in the show, visitors encounter furnishings made entirely of balloons, including a lamp, cactus, couch, and coffee table. During Emily and Gabriel’s walk (and ball pit dive) through the immersive experience, I found myself utterly jealous, and wishing that the exhibition would make its way to New York. It would be just under a year before the exhibit made it’s way down to pier 36!

The New York installment is called the Let’s Fly exhibition, and it offers a stunning inflatable experience crafted by a collaboration of fourteen international artists. This concept transcends conventional art installations, embracing an avant-garde approach that redefines the traditional interactions with art. Let’s Fly encapsulates freedom, flight, and accessibility, taking spectators on an unprecedented sensory journey.

The exhibit thrives on physical interaction, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in a universe of unparalleled freedom. It’s a space where play, touch, and exploration lead through hypnotic visual realms. Artists like Michael Shaw, Sasha Frolova, Rub Kandy, Camilla Falsini, Cyril Lancelin, Tadao Cern, and SpY offer contrasting atmospheres—ranging from light, colorful worlds to heavier, darker tones. The journey is designed as an expedition through surprises and contrasts, igniting a genuine thirst for discovery.

In addition to the contemporary installations, the museum offers a space dedicated to the history of inflatables, tracing its origins from the Montgolfier brothers’ 18th-century experiments to iconic contemporary works like Jeff Koons’ Balloon Dog series. The Balloon Museum serves as a platform not only for contemporary inflatable art but also as a window into its rich historical evolution.

It aims to provide visitors with a tailor-made experience, offering marvels like the graceful bubbles of Quiet Ensemble, interactive sculptures such as ADA by Karina Smigla-Bobinski, the myriad black spheres of Hyperstudio collective, and the musical sculptures of Eness. These works stimulate the senses through touch, sight, and hearing, engaging visitors in transdisciplinary immersive art proposals.

If you make your way to the ball pit, you’re in for a treat. The massive area takes up nearly the whole room, and guests are treated to an immersive show while there. Between it’s interactive features, fantastic music, and photo worthy sites, everyone can have a great time at the exhibit, no matter what age they are.

We highly recommend a trip to the museum yourself! Hear more about it and grab your tickets here!

The Knockturnal was honored to be part of the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center Gala at The Capitale in New York City. This night celebrated Award-winning playwright and screenwriter Lynn Nottage, recipient of the 22nd Annual Monte Cristo Award. This prestigious accolade is an annual tribute to a visionary artist whose work has deeply impacted American theater.

In the midst of this grand celebration, The Knockturnal had the privilege to chat with attendees and performers Justin Hicks, Quincy Tyler Bernstein, and Illario Grant on the red carpet, capturing their emotions and hopes for the impact of the award. We were also honored to speak with honoree Lynn Nottage, who graciously shared her thoughts and hopes for the next generation.

The Knockturnal: As you step onto the carpet tonight, How does it feel to be in attendance for such a special night?

Justin Hicks: It’s special for me because I love Lynn so very much, it feels good and it also feels good to see so many people in the theatre community here its kinda a reunion.

The Knockturnal: What do you envision the benefit of tonight’s gala being for future playwrights and artists?

Justin Hicks: I think anytime someone like Lynn is being awarded or honored it kind of puts a spotlight on someone who may be like her and in various ways, She’s been such a trailblazer in so many ways and I think she also is someone who maintains a level of honesty and in-depth interaction with people that she writes about so I think that’s something that should stick around and something that won’t go out of style.

The Knockturnal: As you step onto the carpet tonight, How are you feeling? What are some thoughts going through your mind and how does it feel to be here?

Quincy Tyler Bernstein: I’m just thrilled to be here, I’m honored to be here Lynn Nottage is one of our greatest living playwrights and I’m so happy I can be here to celebrate her

The Knockturnal: What does it mean to you to be a part of something so special?

Quincy Tyler Bernstein: I just feel really lucky I get to participate in something like this to call Lynn a friend and a former colleague, and I feel really blessed to be here.

The Knockturnal: What does it mean to be a part of this moment of tonight? Being in attendance, what are your emotions and feelings tonight as you step onto the carpet?

Illario Grant: Very excited, doing red carpet, doing press. I’m able to express how important the arts are as a young black man in the arts i think it’s important that I’m here tonight to represent that!

The Knockturnal: What are your hopes for the future of this foundation what are your hopes for future playwrights and artists who will be receiving funding for new work?

Illario Grant: More black artists… it’s important in the business I think that we also have a voice so we have the stuff to say so I think more black artists are needed

The Knockturnal: If you had the opportunity to create your own original play from scratch what would the character or storyline be?

Illario Grant: I think it would be equality something that deals with the world today because there’s a lot going on in the world and there’s a lot of inequality so something dealing with those issues.

The Knockturnal: Happy Belated birthday and congratulations on being honored tonight how are you feeling right now?

Lynn Nottage: To get to this point in your career and your recognized by your peers it’s a little bit daunting but it’s beautiful and worth it.

The Knockturnal: What are your hopes for the next generation of playwrights and artists who are following the path that I’ve blazed for so long?

Lynn Nottage: What my hope is for the next generation is that they continue to innovate, and tell stories. Things have shifted, I feel bigger artists have to be much more socially, politically, and culturally engaged, in my opinion, I feel the younger generation is much more invested in fame than storytelling so, my hope for the future is that we continue to create space for us to tell the diversity of stories that are out there.

Inside ‘Charlie at the POM Springs Hotel’s’ Furry Launch Pawty

by Brittany Skyler November 4, 2023
written by Brittany Skyler

Soho’s Animal Haven housed the cutest paw-ty you’ve ever seen for the most anticipated children’s book, Charlie at the POM Springs Hotel; at least that’s what Amazon says.

Brittany Aubain

The #1 book on Amazon’s New Releases, written by Lara Eurdolian King and illustrated by Chamberlin Newsome, tells the story of the real-life Pomeranian, Charlie, whom King adopted on a trip to Palm Springs with her husband. Charlie went from living in the lobby to starring in his own story (and wine bottles from ONEHOPE.) *ONEHOPE offers a platform to donate 10% of the proceeds to benefit nonprofits chosen by customers.*

Brittany Aubain

Last time, we checked out the Poms and PJs party on Fifth Avenue, and this adorable “Launch Pawty” was just as fabulous as the last. Dog owners toured around the different vendors presented by the FIT Foundation, like BondVet. Charlie spent most of his time hanging out on the shelves of Royce and Rocket. We also spotted the coziest dog beds from LeSure Pets, and all of your dog grooming needs by PetLife Unlimited.

Brittany Aubain

When not looking at all the sweet doggie gifts, guests occupied themselves for the two-hour event with TapSnap 1165’s photobooth, Reiki with Kesaine, food by Williamsburg Pizza, Baked by Melissa,  Soiree, and Blobs.

Wait. Did we even mention that star-studded lineup of hosts? We met up with Chris Redd (Saturday Night Live), Patricia Field (Oscar-nominated Emmy Award-winning costume designer), Orfeh (Tony and Grammy-Award nominee), Andy Karl (Olivier Award-winning, Tony Award Nominee Broadway legend/TV Star), Natalie Negrotti (Big Brother/The Challenge Finalist), KhrystyAna (America’s Next Top Model), and Alicia Quarles (GMA3).

On the way out, guests were treated to the most adorable custom Charlie gift bags by Print All Over Me. Inside were go-to goodies from Thrive Cosmetics, RPZL blowouts, and Powderful.

As fun, as it is to mingle at a party as fun as this, it is all the sweeter when a great cause is involved, as the night raised awareness and funds for animal adoption. Additionally, 100% of the proceeds from book purchases throughout the night went to Animal Haven. It doesn’t stop there; at least $1 from the book’s proceeds will go toward animal welfare groups.

When discussing Charlie at the POM Springs Hotel ahead of its November 7 release, author King stated, “We’re thrilled and humbled to see the warm reception of Charlie’s story. This book is all about embracing different families and the love that unites them. It’s been an incredible journey, and we’re honored to share it with the world.”

As we approach the holiday season, Charlie at the POM Springs Hotel is the perfect gift for the little dog lovers. You can get your copy at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Walmart, and Pretty Connected.

Hallmark decks the halls with Cher and Norah Jones

by Justin Rodriguez November 4, 2023
written by Justin Rodriguez

For some folks the fall months is race to your local Party City for a last minute spooktastic costume or a chance to take a trip to your corner Starbuck for a signature pumpkin spice latte instagram post. However for a select few who believe in merry and bright it marks the beginning to Hallmarks Countdown to Christmas Spectacular. The mecca of holiday cheer begins celebrating the the fall season with “Christmas at Castle Hart” starring Hallmark channel favorite and Mean Girls star Lacey Chabert. The film is one many festive films adding themselves the legacy of channel.

Founded in 2001, Hallmark has become a staple for hit holiday movies including “Christmas Under Wraps”, “A Royal Christmas” and “The Holiday Sitter”. The media giant celebrated its anticipated christmas movies series launch with soiree worthy of Santa’s nice list. Both big wigs and big fans of Hallamrk gatherted at New York City’s high hot stop The Peak. The night was packed full of delicious cuisines supplied by the 5 star restaurant and sparkling signature cocktails that left me feeling like I received the best present this holiday season.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CylcjyKrlZX/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_campaign=loading

Speaking of presents, the holiday mecca gave us a sweet gift in form of music with a surprise performance by multi grammy winner Norah Jones. The iconic songstress delivered a pitch perfect performance of hit songs like “Come Away With Me” and new holiday renditions of fan favorites like “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”. Adding the perfect ribbon to a spectacular night was Hallmark announcing that joining Norah Jones in the movie music world is superstar and living legend Cher, a piece of information that I wish I could hear over and over again, truly if I could turn back time.

Standing on top of the world in the middle of some of our favortite Hallmark movie props felt like a Christmas dream. The night ended with cheerful treats and a signature ornimanet that I can’t wait to place on my Christmas while watching my favorite Hallmark channel premiere movie.
