Let’s face it there are very few women if any in late night, but that didn’t stop Mindy Kaling from writing one heartfelt comedy starring Emma Thompson.
The twosome stop by CinemaCon to present and screen their film for movie theater owners. The two joked about the current state of the workplace before screening the film. Kaling even admitted to writing the role specifically for Thompson having never met her or worked with her, but thinking she’s the only actress that could play the role of Katherine a host of her own late-night television show.
The film that dazzled audiences at this year’s Sundance Film Festival centers around Catherine’s late night TV show that has gone stale. The film touches on themes of women in the workplace, minorities being promoted, and the need to stay relevant. The film delights and is unapologetic in challenging the status quo with really quick whips and funny jabs. Kaling also stars in the film having pulled double-duty writing it as well. John Lithgow also stars as Katherine’s ill husband. Rounding out the cast is the wonderfully talented Amy Ryan. Late Night opens in wide release on June 7th 2019.
