CONTROL Gallery is thrilled to announce the Los Angeles solo debut of Irish artist Conor Harrington with his exhibition When the Ship Goes Down. The show delves into the absurdity of politics, hyper-masculinity, and the resurgence of hyper-nationalism through satirical paintings questioning systems of power. The opening reception took place on March 31, 2023 with the show running through April 29, 2023.
Harrington has been painting 18th Century European archetypes for many years as he believes they represent an almost cartoon-like representation of European excess and arrogance. The men of that era wore frock coats, silk stockings, and shoes with heels, which would be considered feminine by modern standards. Harrington finds this an interesting way to explore questions around masculinity and gender.
This exhibit features canvas paintings as well as works on paper. Each art piece highlights bunting – a delicate object originally used in the navy that now represents patriotism. The figures in his art are seen decorating themselves in bunting to self-congratulate. Harrington says this creates “a contrast between the seriousness and weight of plinth politics with the playfulness, kitschiness and incongruity that a celebratory object can represent.”
Control Gallery Co-Founder Roger Gastman shares that Harrington’s work offers an elegant and highly elevated perspective of the natural distrust of authority young artists develop. Harrington questions hierarchical structures and the figures who symbolize them. Gastman expresses his pride in being able to share this new body of work in Los Angeles.
Over the past 25 years, Harrington has been blending classical and contemporary art styles, utilizing large-scale canvas and concrete to invite the viewer into the scene. He uses oils, spray paint, and occasionally a fire extinguisher to create modern-day epics.
CONTROL Gallery was co-founded by Roger Gastman and Sky Gellatly with a goal to showcase “the most experimental and expansive artwork being made today.” They frequently highlight art that centers around rule-breaking and anti-establishment practices. This gallery has formed a community of creators who do things their own way.
When the Ship Goes Down promises to be an excellent exhibition that challenges the establishment and questions hierarchical structures. Harrington creates a dialogue about the systems of power that govern our lives. It is a show not to be missed for those who appreciate contemporary art that delves deep into the themes of our time.
