With warmer weather arriving, sports enthusiasts can expect plenty of high-speed action as SailGP’s 13 competing teams race throughout the season, culminating in November.
On May 29, NorthStar SailGP goers had the opportunity to meet athletes, tour around, and get a close-up look at F50 leading up to the weekend’s race at Mubadala New York Sail Grand Pix.
Visitors marveled at the decorated boats, spanning 50 feet in length and racing across the water at speeds of up to 60 mph.
The race kicked off on May 30, with only three F50s competing due to high wind conditions. NorthStar SailGP caught up and came in strong during Sunday’s performance, creating a significant moment for the Canadian team’s establishment in sports.
CEO Phil Kennard commended the team’s perseverance and competitive spirit after securing a spot in the grand final. “I’m proud of how the team performed this weekend,” he said. “To miss out on racing opportunities on Saturday and then come back on Sunday and put together three strong fleet races under pressure, says a lot about the character of this team. Securing a place in the grand final and finishing third overall is a great result ahead of our home event in Halifax.”
With Giles Scott as the team’s driver, NorthStart SailGP climbed the rank, leading in 3rd place at Mubadala New York Sail Grand Pix.
“It’s great to be back on the podium; it’s been a long time coming,” he said. “We know that we are capable and that we’ve not had the best start to the season, so it’s nice to pull a good Grand Prix together. We’re happy.”
With renewed momentum heading into the next race, Kennard expressed enthusiasm for the team’s upcoming home event. “We’re excited to bring SailGP back to Canada,” he said. “The support from Canadian fans has been incredible throughout our journey, and competing in Halifax will be a special moment for our team. New York gave us confidence and momentum, and we’re looking forward to carrying that energy into our home event.”
