Roc Nation signee Bobby Fishscale talks new music and social media.
Florida rapper and Roc Nation artist Bobby Fishscale joins us to discuss how his father’s DJ career influenced him to pursue music, how his popularity on social media led to his success, and his new and upcoming music. Now signed with Roc Nation, Bobby never imagined he’d be signing to Jay-Z’s label shortly after dropping “Hov Flow,” his take on Eminem’s “Renegade.” While Bobby was a DJ’s son, he also spent a great deal of his time in the streets, but now that’ he’s signed, his focus is on the music. Bobby also shared tips on how to improve your social media as an artist and how it’s helped him gain a following. While Bobby has received copious amount of attention this past year, Quarantine has not changed his creative process. “I just work. I’m self-motivated, self-disciplined, self-educated so I always been in quarantine. I was never in big groups” says the popular artist. Bobby also reveals the meaning behind his newest mixtape’s title, Da Relapse. Check out the full interview below.
The Knockturnal: Was your family musical at all?
Bobby Fishscale: I wouldn’t say they were musical, but my father was a DJ. I grew up in the streets, it’s music in the streets though. That’s all I knew so it was normal to me.
The Knockturnal: Would you say your relationship with your father put you on that path to pursue music?
Bobby Fishscale: Yeah because that’s what I was around, it’s what I learned. I would say it played a part. I would see him do it and if he could do it. I wanted to learn how to do it, mixing, DJing, spinning, all that.
The Knockturnal: What’s the most important thing your father taught you about the music business?
Bobby Fishscale: Get the money. Always get the money first. Always get the money before the event.
The Knockturnal: You’ve gotten a lot of attention this past year, what have been the 3 biggest highlights in your career thus far?
Bobby Fishscale: The first one gotta be signing with Roc Nation, second, being able to keep it going and third is getting the BMI social status award.
The Knockturnal: How does it feel to be signed to Roc Nation?
Bobby Fishscale: It’s dope. I get to go to the top studios and meet with other artists. It’s all appreciated and I’m grateful for the opportunity.
The Knockturnal: Were you excited and surprised by your BMI Social Status award?
Bobby Fishscale: When they nominated me and I realized it was up to the fans to vote, I felt like I had a chance because I know what it takes.
The Knockturnal: You’ve gone viral a few times and received the BMI Social Status Award, can you talk about the role social media has played in your career and how important it is?
Bobby Fishscale: If you’re not on social media, your music ain’t on social media. You can’t go without it. Spotify might be on Twitter tweeting everything. The streaming platforms are on social media. It’s a lot that goes into it. You gotta focus on getting people to like you. You can’t draw them away from it. You gotta have drip, you gotta have a good photographer.
The Knockturnal: What has your creative process been like since starting Quarantine?
Bobby Fishscale: It’s always been the same. I just work. I’m self-motivated, self-disciplined, self-educated so I always been in quarantine. I was never in big groups.
The Knockturnal: Can you talk about your newest single “He Hard?”
Bobby Fishscale: When I played it for people they said “He Hard” so that’s how we came up with the name.
The Knockturnal: Can you tell us about your latest mixtape Da Relapse?
Bobby Fishscale: It’s dangerous out here to be a rapper. It was to show people that I’m not going anywhere and I’m gonna keep doing what I been doing. I just relapsed on leaving my home.
The Knockturnal: What are you currently working on?
Bobby Fishscale: I’m just recording all the time, when I drop the album it’s gonna be crazy. I got big features on there, shout out to Young Boy.
