John Legend walked into the 2nd floor ballroom of the new Four Seasons Hotel in lower Manhattan Monday night wearing a red and black checkered Alexander McQueen suit.

The “All of Me” singer was on hand to celebrate Gotham Magazine’s annual October Men’s Issue, for which Legend is this year’s cover star.

Earlier in the week Legend shared a picture of his adorable baby girl eyeing his new Gotham Magazine cover with the caption, “I don’t know if she actually recognizes me, but she’s acting like it.”

We chatted with the always class act Legend on his first major movie role in La La Land:

The Knockturnal: La La Land is getting Oscar buzz already. What made you want to Executive Produce a film?

JL: Damien Chazelle! When I found out he was directing it, I loved Whiplash so much, and I feel like what it means to be a good producer is finding the right people to work with. And when you find the right people, the right concept, the right script then there’s a good chance you can make a good film. Damien, I think, made a really great film and I’m excited to be part of it.

The Knockturnal: Has the experience made you want to produce another film?

JL: We’re working on one right now. We’re shooting a film called Monster – I’m executive producing that here in NY. We announced it recently – Jennifer Hudson, ASAP Rocky, Nas – they’re all in the cast. So we got some good things going on.

The Knockturnal: Halloween is coming up. Do you have any ideas of what baby Luna is going to dress up as?

JL: (laughs) Chrissy has ideas. I’ll defer to her and see where those go!

Guest’s mingled in the elaborate ballroom and enjoyed passed hors d’oeuvres like shrimp cocktail, mini sliders, and mushrooms on toast. They also sipped on cocktails provided by Casa Noble Tequila like the Noble-Rita (a spin off the classic margarita) and the Casa Cosmo (because yes, you can make a great Cosmopolitan with Tequila).

Also in attendance were Vivica A. Fox,  Gotham Magazine Publisher Lynn Scott and Editor-in-Chief Samantha Yanks.
