On The Scene: Custo Barcelona Spring 2017 Collection

Custo Dalmau, designer and co-founder of Custo Barcelona, named his spring/summer 17 collection: Way More. And he meant it in every aspect imaginable.

He focused on more delicate fabrics, less prints and more textures, more intricacy in wearable shapes, more range of products. There were bathing suits, cocktail dresses, bomber jackets, trench coats, plastic looking bermudas, and even a fringe hooded cape. Not only that, but even the entire collection was sewn by hand. Which means more work.

It is interesting to see the progression from the brand’s origins in designing t-shirts that were inspired by surfers.

For his menswear looks he also incorporated this theme by adding embroidery to button down shirts, luxury fabrics, metallic colors and semi-transparent shirts. One of the looks had lace beige trousers, a knitted white tee, and a fully beaded bomber jacket with sparkly sequins mixed within the sea of beads.

One aspect where he didn’t apply the way more concept, was with hair and makeup. Most of the models had very soft lip color and just the right amount of blush on their cheeks. The hairdo was a sleek up-do that allowed the focus to be on the clothes as well as the 2000s neon plastic sunglasses.

In comparison to “Reborn”, his last collection for fall/winter 2016, Custo presented a bright collection, with harmonious color combinations that reminded us of what the brand is all about. He also kept the more elaborate work put into each single item. Since his last collection, we are definitely seeing a way more complex collection that elevates the brand into a higher level.

From the start, Custo Barcelona has been a synonym of fun, happy clothes that are easy to wear, and this collection was no exception. Guests could easily spot countless pieces that work for different events and daily occasions. It included all key aspects to make a spring outfit stand out from all the white summer dresses, and even succeeded in having a unique menswear line. It is certain that ss17 is way cooler than what we were used to seeing from Mr. Barcelona.
