She opens up about therapy, online criticism, and finding balance as a creator

With more than 2 million subscribers on YouTube, Charlotte Dobre has carved out one of the platform’s most recognizable brands by reacting to the internet’s most outrageous stories. Whether she’s breaking down wedding drama, awkward social interactions, or viral internet moments, Dobre has built a loyal audience that regularly spends nearly half an hour watching her videos, an impressive feat at a time when attention spans are often said to be shrinking.

Speaking with The Knockturnal, Dobre reflected on the creative journey that led her to YouTube, the strategy behind keeping audiences engaged, why she values evergreen content over chasing every trend, and how therapy has helped her navigate the pressures that come with millions of viewers.

“I was just always a very creative person,” Dobre said. “It’s interesting how all of those skills created my YouTube journey. Whether it’s improv comedy, writing, photography, videography, or working in the news, I apply almost all of the skills I’ve been learning since high school. At the time, I couldn’t see how everything connected, but now I can see how it all came together.”

Before YouTube became her full time career, Dobre experimented with nearly every type of content imaginable. She uploaded advice videos, cooking tutorials, DIY projects, sketches, and other creative concepts, but none of them gained much traction. Everything changed during the pandemic when she decided to film reaction videos simply as a creative outlet while balancing another job.

The format immediately resonated with viewers. It also gave her an efficient production schedule that allowed her to record multiple videos in one day while continuing to work throughout the week. That workflow remains largely unchanged today and has helped her become one of YouTube’s leading reaction creators. Wedding related content quickly emerged as one of the channel’s biggest draws. Dobre believes those stories continue to resonate because weddings naturally create emotional situations that nearly everyone can relate to.

“There is just always so much drama surrounding weddings,” she said. “Everybody has either been in a wedding or knows someone who’s gotten married. They’re such high stakes events because who you marry is one of the biggest decisions you’ll ever make.”

Despite industry concerns that audiences no longer have the patience for long videos, Dobre believes the issue has less to do with attention spans and more to do with storytelling.

“I totally recognize that people have really short attention spans,” Dobre explained. “But they aren’t with my content. My average view duration is around 27 minutes on videos that are close to an hour long. People say attention spans are disappearing, but maybe you just [need to learn] how to keep their attention.”

She credits careful editing and years of experience for making that possible. If a story begins to lose her own attention while filming, she immediately trims unnecessary details before viewers ever see the final product.

“It really is a science,” she said. “If I feel my attention starting to dip, I know other people are going to feel the same way. I’ll cut unnecessary context and get to the good stuff.”

Behind the scenes, Dobre’s operation has grown into a full production company. What started as a solo endeavor now includes editors she has worked with for more than a decade, producers, creative directors, agents, legal advisors, and business partners. Altogether, she estimates roughly 20 people now contribute to her growing brand.

As YouTube continues evolving, Dobre says creators need to balance trending topics with content that has long term value. Participating in trends can help channels grow, but she believes relying on them alone limits longevity because interest eventually fades.

Instead, she focuses on evergreen videos while strategically leaning into seasonal topics, such as wedding stories during wedding season, when audiences are naturally searching for similar content.

Dobre has also become increasingly selective about the brands she partners with. Early in her career she accepted nearly every sponsorship opportunity that came her way, but experience taught her that protecting her audience’s trust was far more valuable than accepting every paycheck.Today she prefers long term partnerships with companies that give her creative freedom and align with her values, including Growtherapy and Walmart, where she recently wrapped production on a new unscripted series alongside fellow creator LaurDIY.

Mental health has also become an important part of Dobre’s personal and professional journey. As someone who admits she deeply cares about what people think, learning to navigate constant online criticism has required years of work.

“I’ve been in therapy for about five or six years,” Dobre said. “I’m a really sensitive person, and when thousands of people are all criticizing you at once, it can be overwhelming. Therapy helped me separate [Charlotte the person from Charlotte the character] people see on camera. That changed everything for me.”

That perspective has also changed how she responds to criticism. Rather than spending hours reading comments or trying to convince critics to change their minds, Dobre has learned to let go of the need to control public opinion.

With millions of subscribers, a growing production team, and an audience that continues to spend nearly half an hour with every upload, Dobre has proven that strong storytelling still matters. While algorithms and trends may continue to evolve, her success shows there will always be an audience for creators who know how to capture attention and keep it.
