Hollywood rumors have a way of making headlines, but this one is coming to life on Apple TV+.
One of the first stills of the series flashes the cheeky tagline “based on a true rumor,” immediately setting the stage for Apple TV+’s newest comedy, Brothers. The show follows Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, playing fictionalized versions of themselves, whose lifelong friendship unravels when they uncover a decades-old secret: they might actually be brothers.
After Woody’s daughter’s engagement falls apart, he loads up his family and heads to Austin for an extended stay at Matthew’s ranch. What begins as a healing getaway quickly spirals when Matthew’s mother, Ma Mac, played by the legendary Holland Taylor, accidentally lets slip a long-buried secret. As Woody turns the ranch upside down in pursuit of the truth, Matthew finds himself juggling an entirely different identity crisis: a potential run for Governor of Texas.
Joining McConaughey and Harrelson is an ensemble cast including Natalie Martinez, Brittany Ishibashi, Nolan Almeida, Ella Grace Helton, Noah Carganilla, Highdee Kuan, Oona Yaffe, and Holland Taylor.
The Knockturnal sat down with Holland Taylor to chat about playing Ma Mac, holding all the cards, and working alongside two of Hollywood’s biggest personalities.
At the center of all the chaos is Taylor as Ma Mac, sporting a bold look that the Emmy-winning actress was instantly smitten with from the start.

“My hair! I thought that hair was perfect,” Taylor joked when asked what she was most excited for audiences to see. “She needs to go to the hairdresser immediately and have those roots done, right away. I just love the look. It stops traffic. It’s really fun to play a traffic-stopping woman.”
Beyond her striking aesthetic, Ma Mac serves as the ultimate instigator between the two massive real-life personalities, dropping a bombshell that drives the entire series. Playing the catalyst behind McConaughey and Harrelson’s screen dynamic proved to be a masterclass in holding all the cards.
“She holds all the cards. People who have secrets can toy with them, but it might be true. It might be absolutely true!” Taylor noted.
That uncertainty is what gives the show its distinct flavor. Taylor embraced the larger-than-life tone of the central premise, treating the story like folklore unfolding in real time.
“This show has an element of tall tale about it, and that is how I play it,” she explained. “You can take it any direction you want to take it, and those boys have to play along, play the game.”
Working alongside McConaughey and Harrelson provided plenty of space for that playfulness on set.

“The thing about Matthew and Woody is that they’re movie stars. And they’re not movie stars for nothing,” Taylor shared. “They have incredible presence and aliveness. And they’re also imaginative and highly skilled. They can create any effect they want, but they also are generous actors. The whole show was very playful.”
While Ma Mac might accidentally spill a life-altering truth in front of her family, Taylor made sure to clarify that she doesn’t share her character’s loose lips off-screen.
“Do I spill? No, I’m a good secret keeper!” she laughed.
The eight-episode comedy will premiere on Apple TV+ with the first two episodes on Sept. 23, followed by one new episode every Wednesday.
