Aldis Hodge and Matthew Lillard play characters in sharp opposition, but off set they’re the best of friends, building a deep sense of trust, with their shared love for the series at the core of their work ethic.
In a recent conversation with the stars of Cross Season 2, the energy was palpable. Aldis Hodge and Matthew Lillard brought equal parts playful ribbing and razor-sharp insight into the work that makes the series crackle on screen. When asked how the actors sustain authentic psychological tension without it ever feeling forced, their answer revealed a careful balance of trust, craft, and community.
The actors joked their way into the truth. Off camera, they’re friendly—teasing each other, trading laughs, but as the moment of “action” approaches, something shifts. “You start to drift further and further away,” Lillard explained “And once the work starts, it’s on.” That transition, they said, is key to keeping the conflict alive and believable.
Hodge added that trust between scene partners is just as crucial. With confidence in each other’s preparation, there’s no room for second-guessing on set. “I’m not worried about what my scene partner is doing,” Hodge said of Lillard. “I trust him to bring his A game.” That trust allows both actors to focus on what their own characters want, where they’re headed, and how they evolve over the season, locking in without fear and pushing each scene as far as it needs to go.
Lillard, who affectionately refers to Hodge as “number one on the call sheet,” shared that the sense of safety on Cross goes far beyond what appears on screen. He credited Hodge’s leadership, both as the series’ executive producer and its leading man, for cultivating an environment rooted in respect, collaboration, and trust. “There’s something about the way he creates community on that set that empowers people to be their best,” Lillard said. “That is not always the case in this town.” That feeling of being supported and valued, he added, pushes everyone to show up fully, making excellence the standard with every take.
The anticipated second season premieres on Prime Video on February 11, 2026.
