Netflix Hosts a Red Carpet Event for the Animated Feature ‘Nimona’

On June 24, Netflix hosted a red carpet for the animated feature Nimona (2023). Cast members, producers, and celebrities dished on the upcoming film’s production.

Cast members Chloë Grace-Moretz and Eugene Lee Yang discussed their roles. Creator ND Stevenson posed with directors Nick Bruno and Troy Quane in front of the red Ninoma banner. Executive producers Robert Baird, Megan Ellison, and Andrew Millistein enjoyed the refreshments. Producers Julie Zachary and Karen Ryan made appearances as well.

Mortez-Grace played Nimona, a supernatural and rebellious person. The animated character had undercut red hair, several earring studs, and big, shiny eyes. In many scenes, she had a mischievous smile. Mortez-Grace shared her thoughts on the character’s traits and arch.

She said, “Nimona is one of the hardest characters to explain in a paragraph. In three words, I would say, ‘shapeshifter, chaotic, and loving.’” Her smile reflected her joy from playing this character. She discussed how she prepared for this groundbreaking role.

Bruno and Quane adapted the film from the graphic novel of the same name. Rich source material existed for Mortez-Grace’s character. “To have a webcomic turned into a graphic novel to pour over was perfect,” she said. Yang presented a unique perspective on his character.

Yang played Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin. In the graphic novel, the character had long, blonde hair. In the movie, the character looked more like Yang. The character had short, white hair with shaved black sides. Despite his changes in appearance, the character’s conflict remained intact. “He’s constantly battling with the idea of whether should he follow his heart or follow his duty,” explained Yang.

Directors Nick Bruno and Troy Quane talked about their technical philosophies. “Our vision came from one message and that’s a message of acceptance. Characters are judged for a label and not necessarily for who they are,” said Quane. The duo successfully adapted the graphic novel into a film.

First, Bruno and Quane identified what the fanbase loved about the graphic novel. They put the ideas of acceptance and self-love at the film’s core. They wanted to keep each character’s journey intact. The duo collaborated with ND Stevenson for the film’s entirety. 

“The first thing we wanted to do is meet them and bring them in,” said Bruno. Stevenson looked over storyboards and screenplay drafts. They gave suggestions for revision. “They helped us create some funny lines for Nimona and was really just a cool collaborator,” Bruno explained. The producers had positive experiences with cast selections.

Baird, Ellison, Millstein, Zachary, and Ryan selected the film’s actors. Many came onto the project at the storyboarding stage and stayed until the final cut. “That was one of the easiest choices for us. Once we had the characters, the actors were all our first choices. They all embody what the characters embody in the film,” explained Ryan. 

Central Production Supervisor Haley Brooks learned lessons from the film. said, “One of the things I’ve learned is to be resilient, keep going, and be yourself.” Social media influencers posted about the event on their pages.

Team2Moms’ Ebony, Denise, and Olivia Nunez interviewed cast members for their social media page. Stephanie Pilavin, Gregoria Reyes, and Yully Hernandez posed for photos by a large, red rhinoceros. Charmaine Gordon attended the event as well. In front of shiny green plants, Kristi Romero took group photos with her family.

Servers with Nimona staff badges offered free refreshments. They served mimosas, Moët Chandon champagne, and juice boxes to guests. Also, they offered two types of water: still and sparkling. Staff members handed out delicious pizza as well.

It came in triangular containers. The mini boxes read “Hot and Fresh Jim’s Pizza.” In the film, protagonist Ballister Boldheart (Riz Ahmed) and Nimona received food deliveries from this restaurant. Servers offered guests a sugary treat too.

Attendees ate cotton candy inspired by the film’s characters. Flavors included Nimona, Rhino, 

Dragon, and Gorilla.  A decorative box on the table read “It takes a villain to do a hero’s job.” In addition, visitors received terrific gifts.

Guests received a Netflix Family Summer tote bag. It contained two Nimona plushies and a box of chocolates. One showed her as a girl and the other depicted her as a red whale. After the red carpet, attendees watched a special screening of the feature. It took place in a futuristic and medieval world. 

In front of the kingdom, the Queen will initiate Ballister as a knight. During the ceremony, he is framed for her murder. The only person willing to help him prove his innocence is Nimona.

She is a mischievous teen who likes violent activities. Coincidentally, she can also shapeshift. Ballister has trained to destroy this creature. With the entire kingdom against him, Nimona is his only hope.

The lines between heroes, monsters, and villains blurred. The duo confided in each other. Eventually, they learned the truth. Ballister determined the best way to clear his name: let Nimona cause havoc. In the proceeding Q&A, the cast and crew discussed early production issues.

In 2019, the crew began production on the film with Blue Sky Studios. Animators sketched out the character’s designs. Also, they drew the movie’s dystopian backgrounds. In 2021, Disney shut down the animation studio. At this time, the film’s layout was reportedly 70% completed. Netflix and Annapurna picked up the movie.

Under their supervision, the crew finished the feature. DNEG Animation completed the animation, colorization, titles, and end credits. On June 23, Netflix subscribers found the film on the streaming platform.
