From the Marvel Cinematic Universe comes “Ant-Man and The Wasp,” a new chapter featuring heroes with the astonishing ability to shrink.
We spoke with stars Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas and Michael Cerveris on the red carpet for The Cinema Society premiere at MoMA.
Not only is he the main superhero in the film, but Paul Rudd further contributed to the film as a writer as well. When discussing this additional role he said,”It’s a real honor and a really cool thing to be able to do because it gives me insight into everybody’s characters in a way that I wouldn’t if I was just acting in it. And I think of the whole story and when I’m even going in and doing scenes I’m thinking of the entire story, not just my lines. In doing so it makes me more connected to the role that I am playing.” Like many of the films in the MCU, Ant-Man and The Wasp included some pure comedic gold in the script. However, it is distinct from the other films in that it not only incorporated more comedy than usual, as the other films usually intertwine comedy as a comedic relief, but it is also featured a story revolving around family and romance. “It’s weird I don’t really know what kind of category it fits in, it checks a lot of boxes. But I would say it’s a comedy with actual visuals in depth, and it fits in the Marvel Universe, I don’t really know. Honestly, I don’t know if I can classify it.”
The Knockturnal spoke to Michael Douglas in regards to the rumor about him doing all his own stunts, “As Hank Pym probably, he’d have too many,” joked Douglas. “But it’s really a treat. You know I’ve always been kind of an indie kinda guy in all my movies, but to be in this Marvel family and have a little love and support, I really like it in my old age. I must say I really enjoy it and they’re really a nice bunch of guys, very talented, but they like nice people you know? In this point of my life that’s the way, I like to work. We had a big preview out in California, premiere. And he was telling us … everybody is giving us a good review, everybody seems to likes it. It kinda comes at you like you can’t really believe, it’s like “what?!” And it was fun for me because I never saw it until the other night, so that was a first for me because I really enjoyed it.” Michelle Pfeiffer, one of the most popular actresses of the 1980’s and 1990’s was the newest addition to the cast. When asked about his collaboration with the actress, Douglas couldn’t help but praise the rest of his cast as well, “Yes! Michelle Pfeiffer, Laurence Fishburne is on this! Wonderful British actress, Hannah John-Kamen. And Evangeline and Paul. I had never worked with her before [Pfeiffer] but it was just really a treat. And not only did we get to work together but we get to go back thirty years in the flashbacks, so to work with Michelle Pfeiffer and be thirty years ago is great.”
Marvel is infamous for the surprise villain, so we discussed with Michael Cerveris his infamous character. “I’m playing Elihas Starr, in this movie he’s only known by his regular world name.” Elihas Starr is also known as the Marvel villain Egghead. Although not revealed as a villain in Ant-Man and The Wasp the audience just might see again with a complete makeover of his seemingly harmless character. “It was probably the most thrilling fun thing I’ve been a part of, and I’ve been a part of some really thrilling fun things. I’ve thought I had been part of a big production before, but being in a Marvel film is like nothing I had ever encountered.” Having previously played Professor Pyg in Gotham and Ramses IV in The Tick, Cerveris is no stranger to the comic book world. “I love it because I was such a comic book kid so the fact that I have a toe in the DC and the Marvel world, is just beyond thrilling for me. And then with The Tick, a whole other universe. And going back to Fringe I was in several universes at the same time in that show!”
