Exclusive: Toosii Talks Recent Album, ‘Platinum Heart (Deluxe)’ & More

The North Carolina-based rapper, Toosii, is once again showcasing his talent and vision with his most recent body of work, Platinum Heart (Deluxe).

The New-York native, who is known for his unique artistry that fuses his genuine lyricism and melodic flow, released the album in May, just 3 months after the release of its predecessor, Platinum Heart, which impressively surpassed 50 million combined streams. The new album includes 7 new tracks that act as a strong set of fresh, introductory features that complement the previous work extremely well.

After self-releasing his debut EP, Why Not Now, in 2017, Toosii went on to release his breakthrough track, “Karma”, that led him to sign with South Coast Music Group soon after. His first release with the label, a mixtape titled Who Dat (2019), garnered enough success that catapulted him to touring with Summer Walker later that year. Since then, he has also had the opportunity to open for artists such as DaBaby, Moneybagg Yo, and NBA YoungBoy.

Included in the album is “Club House”, an upbeat anthem that with its savvy rhymes and pulsating beats, is able to get any person want to spark pandemonium of their own in their ‘clubhouses’.

The visual for the track was filmed in his very own home and was released on YouTube at the beginning of June. It has accumulated more than 1.1 million views. The 20-year-old has since released additional music videos for “Mercedez,” “Forever Paid,” and “Inside Out.”

The Knockturnal checked in with Toosii to weigh in on the success of his recent albums, new music videos, and what being a young artist signifies.

The Knockturnal: Your most recent album, Platinum Heart (Deluxe), was released in May, just 3 months after releasing Platinum Heart. It featured 7 new tracks. Why did you decide to release a deluxe album instead of opting to hold off the songs for a future project?

Toosii: I felt like there were big songs on the Platinum Heart album that needed light. So instead of holding off, I added even bigger songs.

The Knockturnal: Growing up between New York and Raleigh, what was the onset of your interest in music and how did it influence the decision to become an artist?

Toosii: I come from nothing, so when I moved to Raleigh, it was like a breath of fresh air.

The Knockturnal: The track “Club House,” is a standout from the new album. What is the song about and what was the inspiration behind it?

Toosii: It was just another song I made in the mood honestly.

The Knockturnal: For the month of June, Rolling Stone ranked you #10 as part of their ‘Breakthrough 25’ list that tracks the fastest-rising artists. What encouragement do recognitions like this give you?

Toosii: Just to go harder. I try not to get caught up in the numbers, but I do tend to get excited.

The Knockturnal: Your music video for “Forever Paid” premiered just over two weeks ago and it has already racked up well over half a million views. How was the process of filming it during quarantine and how did it impact the momentum of the album release?

Toosii: It was honestly just a run and gun video. We had fun shooting it, it didn’t take long.

The Knockturnal: Being only 20 years old, you already have 4 strong projects under your belt and a growing fanbase. How does this speak on your work ethic and commitment to your craft? What advice would you give to other young rappers alike?

Toosii: I record a lot. Like, a lot a lot. I would say stay consistent, continue to shoot videos, and put out a body of work.

Watch the video for “Club House” below.
