Bryce Dallas Howard’s “Dads” is a refreshing and heartwarming look at the rarely talked about hardships and pleasures of fatherhood in today’s society. It’s a raw and entertaining approach to share the behind-the-scenes reality of what it means to be a father from a very diverse group of dads across the world.

From celebrities to heartfelt underdog stories, “Dads” is not the typical documentary. Famous fathers Jimmy Kimmel, Will Smith, Judd Apatow, Conan O’Brien, Kenan Thompson, and many more employ conversational interviews with Howard in front of a green screen, recounting their personal experiences as dads.

In a very causal setting, the actors reveal very intimate and dear-to-the heart details. For example, actor Will Smith shares the private yet funny details of his wife’s, Jada Pinkett Smith, water breaking while excitedly putting together his brand new Picture-in-Picture television set.

In between the celebrity interviews, the film cuts to five average dads across the world with uniquely different stories. From the stay-at-home dads to the ones who have redeemed a fatherly status with their children, “Dads” is filled with a plethora of emotions.

Director Howard even delves into the footage of her own life growing up with director Ron Howard as her father who is also a producer on the film. We’re given a rare look into the original Howard family home videos. It can’t get more personal than that.

As the film progresses, we can’t help but reflect on relationship with our own fathers and focus on the role they played in our lives, whether that be good or bad. “Dads” makes you forget about the times he never showed up to your school plays or soccer games allowing you to relish in the good times you shared.

“Dads” sheds a much-needed light on the underdog parent. Mothers, who are naturally given an honorary status, are set aside to draw attention to the emotional challenges and joys fathers face on a daily basis.

The 2019 documentary that premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival was obtained by Apple TV+ with plans to release it for global streaming this June 19th, just in time for Father’s Day.

It’s the perfect film to watch with or without your dad to find value and happiness in whatever kind of relationship you share with him.
