Exclusive: PxRRY is The Future of R&B

Pxrry is the up and coming artist who is taking the R&B world by storm.

As early as 10 years old, Pxrry grew up with music naturally in his blood, having performed in front of large crowds and audiences. Now after lending his writing skills to some of the industries most legendary artists, including Angie Stone, and earning over 30 registered placements, Pxrry is letting his own music speak for itself.

The release of his two EP’s ‘Overdue’ and ‘Love Notes’ gained him international attention as a solo artist, and it is easy to see why he has had so much success. As a full-blown entertainer, PxRRY is a triple threat- singing, dancing and acting, and his melodic and soulful vocals create effortless hits. I caught up with the rising star, after his performance in downtown New York, to hear more about his journey and sky-rocking success:

The Knockturnal: You’ve been performing and involved in the arts from such a young age, what were those early beginning days like for you as an artist just developing your craft?

PxRRY: I grew up in a performing arts group. I was singing dancing, rapping, acting, we were on mini and big stages in Boston, Connecticut. That was from ten years old all the way to high school. That introduced me to the arts. Singing, dancing, acting. This lady named Kimberly Bridges she was the head of it. She took us in as her children and basically taught us rhythm and all that stuff so that’s how it started, we were stepping in a drill team and everything. I write all my music, and the performing art group helped with that.

The Knockturnal: That’s amazing. Was there a sparking moment you knew R&B was the genre for you?

PxRRY: I started rapping before I was singing. I had a few mixtapes when I was younger, rap mixtapes. I used to battle people at the lunch table and everything. I was a “rapper, rapper.” [Laughs] But I just got tired of it because I ran out of stuff to talk about. So I switched to R&B because it was easier for me to talk about things like women and love and I just love being edgy and talking to women and just telling the world my conversations and how I want to say stuff. The transition kind of started around school because I went from rapping in the hallways to people being shocked like ‘oh he can sing’ and I never had any vocal training either, I’m all self-taught.

The Knockturnal: Every song you put out is so versatile. What are some of your keys to always switching up the content flow?

PxRRY: Me and my partner RichBreed, he just puts on a beat and we’ll probably smoke to get the juices flowing. And we’ll try different things with the sound like ‘let’s try this, let’s try that.’ But at the end of the day it’s all me, when I make music I always think what would I, as a listener get tired of hearing? I ultimately just like to make music that I like to listen to and never get tired of hearing.”

The Knockturnal: Do you have any new music we should look out for?

PxRRY: I’ve been tapping into new sounds and I’m just excited to put it out. We’re just putting out singles right now. We got two projects out right now on Apple Music. The next song might be called ‘Losing Your Clothes,’ so look out for that.

The Knockturnal: I know you write your own lyrics could you tell us a little bit about that process as well as who your own musical inspirations in the field have been?

PxRRY: Lyric-wise, it will always be edgy. I take time writing it, I want my music to last and be timeless and it starts with the pen. As far as musical inspirations I would say, Usher, Drake in terms of the pen, that’s why I’m big on the writing because the key is writing. In terms of writing, seeing how country musicians write kind of taught me and helped with writing. I also like a lot of country artist like Gunna and Lil Baby, melodically I would say Future and Partynextdoor.

The Knockturnal: Nice! I know it’s hard to pick, but do you have any favorites of your projects or a favorite song you created thus far?

PxRRY: I would actually say ‘Prove It’ was especially one. Once I wrote ‘Prove It,’ it made me confident I could write a memorable hit people could sing along to.

The Knockturnal: Is there anything the world should know about Pxrry the artist?

PxRRY: I just want to say, for THE R&B world, I might be what’s been missing. Sometimes artists will be on stage and just walk back and forth, it’s cool I get it, the people in the crowd are singing along to the music, but with my shows I want the people to sing my music word for word and I want to entertain them. No one’s doing it. And I want to incorporate the singing, dancing, and everything into my performances. I like to be an entertainer and do things big. So I definitely like to be a full entertainer.
