Hair stylists and makeup artists fluttered around Spring Studios’ backstage on Friday in preparation for the Cushnie F/W 2019 show.
Her first Fall/Winter show since Michelle Ochs’ departure in February 2018, CEO and Creative Director Carly Cushnie decided on a sleek, 1970s-inspired hair and beauty transformation for her inclusive cast of models.
In collaboration with celebrity hairstylist Justine Marjan with TRESemmé and Maybelline Lead Artist Grace Lee, Cushnie’s models walked the runway with low ponytails and tawny-colored lips.
Hairstylist Justine Marjan worked with Cushnie and created a “shiny, low ponytail that will sit on the girl’s neck,” she stated while teasing model Candace Huffine‘s brunette locks. The TRESemmé team “prepped the hair with the TRESemmé Thermal Infused Heat Protect Spray and then [blow dried] it straight with the ghd Air Blowdryer and then [went] over the blow dry with the ghd Platinum + Styler and Smoothing Brush to get it really clean and straight,” Marjan continued. The final ponytail was secured with a simple, brown string that added a minimal finish to the high-gloss style.

On the beauty side, Grace Lee spoke on Cushnie’s desired makeup look.
“The look is really about this monochromatic, very tawny, terra cotta. It’s not bronzy all over, but those colors kind of fall in the right places to give the face dimension,” Lee said. “It’s kind of very ’70s, where you have that [blush] color through the cheeks, temples, eyes, and then this brown-orangey lip with kind of what I like to call a cool girl cat-eye, because it’s not a cat eye that goes directly in from the inner corner, she kind of starts from the middle of the eye and kind of does a little back-and-forth motion.”

Both hair and makeup allowed for simplicity and subtle glow from their models without overpowering the star of the show–the collection. With pieces in bright red, navy blue, and pastel pink, Cushnie’s Fall/Winter collection did not sacrifice color for the cooler temperatures. Cut-outs and silhouettes that frame and fit the body presented a modern perspective on a classic, feminine look.
