Markus Schulz-American-German DJ is back yet again, he has been on the scene since Monster Massive back in the mid-2000’s when EDM was taking over Los Angeles.
Now in New York City, Markus Schulz bring backs progressive trance with the hottest set. With collaborations with acts like Depeche Mode, Jewel, Fat Boy Slim and more, this DJ is not stopping anytime soon through the evolution of dance music. We caught up with him at the 2017 Electric Zoo music festival.
You have been around for a long time…
Oh, not that long, I’m not that old (laughs)
You also performed at Monster Massive a long time ago.
Yeah, that was one of the first massive’s that I ever did. It was crazy.
So how do you feel about festivals turning around?
Well you know it’s a new generation, with that comes new energy, new things. It’s exciting, because you know what? I don’t like it when things get tired. I’ve always been a progressive person who’s tried to push, push, push. It’s amazing to see how everything has evolved, I love it too because the festival gives a lot to the generation before for example you have Sasha & John Digweed doing their reunion here today. It’s something for everybody- it’s for the new generation and previous generation. I’m a progressive person, I’m always looking to push forward.
How did your music transform throughout the years?
I think it’s evolved. Like when EDM came it was like new energy, it was like a new thing. Everybody kind of like perked up and said “hmm this is interesting.” The only thing is most of us realized really quickly how shallow of a format it is. But there were some ideas or a vibe in the EDM thing- the early days of the EDM thing that kind of stuck around. Trance has evolved, not just me as an artist. As well as the fact that melodies and composers are always looking to push the envelope. I love seeing things push forward.
To be honest that’s exactly what I wanted. My father was a musician it’s kind of in my blood. I get asked all the time “what would you do if you weren’t a DJ.” And I don’t know, maybe when I was real small I wanted to be a veterinarian, but that was when when I was super small. This is my purpose in life, I honestly feel that all the way down to my bones. This was what I was put onto this Earth for.
