Not The Science Type, presented by 3M, premiered at The Standard Hotel in New York City during Tribeca Film Festival on June 17. The four-part docuseries, produced by 3M and Generous Films, features four incredibly inspirational female scientists that do not fit the stereotypical “scientist mold.”

The film follows the women as they confront discrimination and break down barriers in their fields. The film serves as a platform to have a deeper conversation regarding the stereotypes in STEM and the importance of diversity and inclusion.

The film stars Gitanjali Rao, TIME Magazine’s Kid of the Year 2020, Dr. Ciara Sivels, a nuclear engineer and the first Black woman to earn a PhD from the University of Michigan in nuclear engineering, Dr. Jessica Taaffe, a global health scientist and microbiologist, and Dr. Jayshree Seth, a chemical engineer and 3M’s chief scientist advocate.

3M hosted the special screening of the film, hosted by comedian Loni Love, the co-host of “The Real.” Though Love is a television host and comedian now, she is no stranger to the STEM fields, as she is a former electrical engineer. “This is the type of thing I would like to use my platform for says Love. “To inspire young women to let the know they can be whatever they want to be.”

Speaking of inspiring young women, Not The Science Type’s Gitanjali Rao is as inspiring as they come. The 15 year old inventor sets out to “inspire her generation as well as futures ones.”

At only 15 years old, Rao has been interested in STEM for as long as she can remember. “My uncle got me a science kit when I was three or four years old and I’m pretty sure I wanted a Barbie dream house,” says Rao. “Obviously it changed my life forever in the best way possible.” Sorry @ Mattel, but I think we’re going with science kits for Christmas this year.

Well, consider us inspired. Not The Science type is extremely well-executed and overall heart-warming, but don’t just take our word for it- you need to see it for yourself. The film is now available on Apple TV and Google Play.
